Nevadans?

Horsefeatherz, why dont you want them growing up?

Im sorry they did though, if it makes you upset. That really sucks about the eggs. Mailorder? Penturner had similar luck.

and silkie americaunas sound really cool. I didnt even know those existed.

Ke_ben, are all those pictured roos? That is a lot if so!!

Everyone, can you tell me what you think happened here? I had a chicken not walking right a couple of days ago, so i seperated her. She was eating and drinking fine and everything looked good, and i thought she was making a recovery. Then she died this morning, and i could find a thing wrong with her besides not walking. I know she wasnt over heated like horsefeatherz hen (good save, by the way

) She was a young hen from ideal from this feb.

I would think it was just coincidence or somthing, but it happened with another one, same breed and age, everything. Happened just the same. Im not sure what breed it is, though. They look like golden wynadottes, but with single combs and long legs. Do you think theyre a game variety or something? Im really good at penning chicken breeds, but this stumped me.

Genny you're so funny! Everyone else is so impatient because their gals don't lay right away and you're upset because they do. Except for the one girl I told you about a month ago none of my pullets born on March 1st have started laying yet but some are singing the egg song so it shouldn't be too much longer. The one that started early has never had a normal egg yet and she only lays one once in awhile. Something is off with her reproductive system. She is a sweetie though and she is great friends with the other gals so I will keep her for company.

Lacey how is that sunburn? I sent you a pm this morning. My kids and I do not burn easily (we are mutts) so I haven't had to deal with a blistering burn yet but the stuff I told you about in that pm has worked for less severe burns. Hope you feel better soon!

hahahaha, im a mutt too, but i seem to have the lameo scandinavian skin, which doesnt make sence because theres barely any in my family. I think one or two grandparents on each side came from those countries. Other than that my dad is german and my mom italianand irish. so idk. bleh, it doesnt matter.

Ihad a chicke once that layed really strange shaped eggs. Most were pretty gross. Several were V shaped. I never quite understood. Thy were fully formed, yolk and shell. it was pretty neat.

Sounds cool. Like those cliff dwelling birds that lay really pointy ended eggs with a wide end that keep the eggs from rolling off the ledge. lol Maybe it's something left over from the chicken's ancient DNA that shows up only once in awhile. lol

Hello, how's it going in NV land?
Quote:
No they aren't all roos, it just seems like it sometimes, but at least a third of them are.

Are they golden comets? Maybe some of Ideals breeders were having an issue.

Mutant eggs, huh?

Once they start, well they are no longer “babies” and they get interested in boys – just makes me sad that they grow so fast – my own quirk. Yup, the Silkied Amers were mailorder - A fantastic member Jubaby hatched some "flukes" a couple years ago - she has a thread in breeds titled "What is wrong with their feathers" - if you wanna take a look.

Early egg laying can go hand in hand with a host of problems – soft shelled eggs, deformed eggs, egg bound hens, fluid retention – things I worry about, so I prefer their insides to fully mature before starting to lay. I mean honestly, they will lay for the rest of their life - just enjoy the young nonlaying months for a bit.

Sunny – some extra calcium should help that girl – crushed Tums in yogurt, oyster shells, or even dried crushed egg shells.

hey guys

been a little busy for me the last few days....
i lost my EE roo yesterday to the heat.... poor guy.... guess the other 3 roos in the pen with him hogged all the shade.....

on a better note, i have some interesting chicks coming up.. no, i don't have pics, i've been slacking, maybe over next weekend i can take some....
everyone is free ranging together right now, so it's free for all pot luck chickies everywhere.... a large % are cuckoo/barred..... you get to guess who the parents are based on combs and leg feathering and leg color... lol... some i know hatched out of bantam eggs, but they're getting big.... so the cuckoo marans may be the dad... they also have SPARSE leg feathers as opposed to the full fluffy that my cochin girls have....
i have one that is barred with a pea comb!! hope that one is a girl... don't remember if it hatched out of a green egg or not...
i have a barred that is ssoo light... the black.. not just he looks more white than black, he looks gray and white striped... i hope that one grows and thrives so i can see what he turns out to be....
i've also still got brick who's ssoo cute... he's a more silver/gray.. not quite sure if he's blue or not... but i'm thinking his mom was my black cochin... ??
i have one that i thought was going to be barred, looked just like all the other barred babies at hatch, but it's getting brown and black stripes instead of black and white??? i can't wait to see if that stays or if it's a flukey wing feather coloring...

i THINK i have 4 MFC chicks... YaY!!!! gotta wait a bit longer to see how their colorings turn out...

Evonne-sorry to hear about your roo. I'm getting ready to do a test run with my chicks this weekend in their new coop and run. They are now 4 weeks old. I'm getting a little paranoid hearing about everyone's losses. I'm torn because I don't want anything to happen to them. But on the other hand, they are so itching to get out and move around. When I take the lid of the brooder box they are hopping (and pooping) all over my laundry room! They so want to explore. I'm hoping that the temps while we're on vacation won't be as bad was what we've seen the last week.

I have a question for you all. I ordered 2 barred rocks and 2 silver cuckoo marans and they seem to look the same. How do you tell them apart? 2 are larger and the 2 smaller ones are real social and gentle. One of them even flies onto my shoulder. She's gotta be front row and center with me! I think I'm going to name her sweetie pie.

Well, I was just informed there was a jail break and had to round up the usual suspects! Man, that Ginger, an EE, is such a rebel!

Good night all!

just take the precautions, make sure they know where the shade is.... maybe put their food and water where hte shade will be during the hottest part of the afternoon.. between 2-5 ish.... don't forget that a shaded area in the am wont be a shaded area in the afternoon...
then if you have the misters set up for them, and maybe the ice bottles... they'll be fine.....

on the BR / Marans, BR have yellow legs, Marans have pink w/ a hint of gray
and if you look close when they're not moving (good luck with that) you should see the the BR striped seem to flow... kinda consistant... you can follow a stripe from one feather to the next.. they line up.... the cuckoos are more sporadic.. you'll see the edges of each feather because they don't line up.. if that makes any sense.... that's nothing ot bas breed on, just an observation about pattern... for breed between those 2 go for the legs

Evonne-thank you! The pink and yellow legs totally helped. Now if I can just remember, which one is pink and which one is yellow!

We'll be testing them this weekend, so they will be checked frequently. I've already been training my mom and dad on what to do while we're gone, so hopefully it will work out.
