Nevadans?

Hmm, I read in here a few times but didn't take time to comment. I will have to go back in a bit.

the funeral crashing story was horrendous, Pam. can't believe people would do something like that.

As for wedding cakes, I didn't care too much about the cake so we did not have a fancy tiered cake. We had a small cake for the feeding each other cake part and sheet cake for the guests. the decorative cake was a norwegian crown cake that my mom made. it is stacks of rings. it has almond flavoring and is almost like a cookie texture. she baked extra rings and broke into pieces for people to try it. it's pretty and a nice piece of my scandinavian heritage. I will have to dig out a photo. For my wedding, I cared most about my dress and I wanted nice photos. I got both of those. My mom sewed my dress, which I loved. We took photos before the wedding in our neighbors' back yard and they turned out very nice.
I have been off the loop, I will take some time and read through what everyone has been up too! The past two months I have been preparing for the arrival of my new 6 mos old filly! We traveled 9 hours to Oregon to pick her up. She is now home safe and sound and I can get back to "normalcy" LOL! Like life is going to be normal with a 6 mos old filly that has very little human interaction...
Hoping to can some apples soon!
Hope everyone is well, and I will read back thru the posts in the next couple of days!
congrats! sounds like lots of work and lots of fun!

Sunny if you do want to get into sculpting mark has a small kiln that I bet he would let you borrow
Cool!!! Maybe the universe is telling me something here! Time to feed that part of my spirit again. :)
Couldn't you completely clear cut an area to put your crucible in? I'm sure you would probably just have to meet certain code requirements and it could be done. Worth a try?
Finding a crucible to purchase in the first place would be a challenge. The ones used at foundrys are way too big for personal use. They are just not easy to find. If I could find one I assume the rest would not be too difficult.
Actually, yes! Well, maybe not a spare one...

I have a kiln that I use for testing mineral samples (assaying). Prospecting for gold is one of my hobbies.
My Grandfather was a prospector! He crawled all over the mountains and desert of AZ prospecting. He was still doing it at 89 years of age but from 90-97 he went downhill fast and couldn't do all of that stuff anymore. But hey! Still being able to hike for miles and miles at 89 yrs of age ain't nothin' to sneeze at! To do bronze I need to heat up about 20 ozs of metal at a time then pour through a small opening into the plaster mold after the wax is melted away. Can you heat and pour at least 20ozs from that kiln? Running that kiln can't be cheap. Would you consider charging for it's use?
Artist's loft...

Maybe we just need 1 Artist's loft that's big enough for all of us!

Nothing I've done has fixed the problem with this site. Everything runs together and I can't even post pics! Amazing how low people can be. Someone at the cemetery and this is a National Cemetery, tried to grab flowers off of the displays at Bill's funeral. They weren't even supposed to be in that area since they were either visiting someone or at another funeral. Jerks. I can't believe anyone would dare go to someone's home! That's just lower than words. Bill bough me silver clay just before he died, but I didn't have him to help me build an area for the kiln and just wasn't into anything, so my sister had a friend that needed to make some money and I gave it to her to use. I'd love to have a glass kiln! I've done lots of dichronic glass pieces. It wasn't really a mediom of mine, but I did like it and it sold. I have tons of gem stones. The only silver I have now is wire, but I love working with it when I can get my hands to do what I want. I started out with beadwork when I was 4. I was luck enough to have a gggrandmother who taught me peyote beading and loom work. I rarely use a loom these days though. I like being able to take things with me to work on. Well I did when Bill was here to drive, but I can do just as good with off loom, so I do that more often. My mom taught me to sew when I was 9. I had such long legs she said zi needed to know how. I only bought my leather coats and jackets and jeans when I was in high school and jr high. Everything else I made including my jewelry. I mad a lot of money on jewelry in high school. I have a cousin that went to school with me who still has a choker I made for her and wears it when she goes out. :) I love that she liked it so much and has had it all these years! I made my mom a lot of things, but after she died I have no idea what happened to any of it. Most of her things we thrashed or given to strangers. My 2 brothers and my youngest sister have things, but I got zip. Oh well.
Stealing flowers from another grave?!! Is that what they think their Dearly departed wants? Sheeesh!
I must have clicked the "compatability" button on the page setting. What a dork!

The cake tasted great too. All of her cakes are great. She has a secret recipe for a cinnamon roll cake that's her trademark cake and everyone asks for it. Me?? Give me something with ganache and fondant and I'm a happy camper.
Oh Man! I'd go for the cinnamon too! I love cinnamon in almost everything!!! I go through a lot of it here.

The cake looks great!

About a year and a half ago, I found an amazing recipe for chocolate cake. It had buttermilk, dark cocoa, and a little coffee in it, and a chocolate ganache. It was the best chocolate cake I had EVER tasted. So good that, halfway through it, I had to give the rest to the faculty room at Sahara's school so I wouldn't eat the rest.
I have a recipe for a flour-less chocolate cake that I add Kahlua (or Amaretto) and expresso to. Chocolate's not my fav but Steve goes gaga over this cake! I like it mixed with my cheesecake recipe though. It's really good then.
Yummmm. Caaaaaaaake.....

I love baking and was gifted with Grandma's cake plate when she passed. But two people and a cake... Well, to put it delicately, neither of us are getting any thinner. Too, the cake+plate take up a heckalot room in the fridge.

I took a cake decorating course, too. Great fun, but painful. I then discovered that the top three careers for carpal tunnel are court reporting, card dealing and cake decorating! (And, yes, I would LOVE to be a Black Jack dealer...I always thought that would be a fun "people" job). My hats off to those of you that can do a full-on cake in piped frosting without wincing.

Sunny... That basket of eggs is gorgeous. What's the color number on your darkest egg? (if you know)
Haha! I keep trying to fatten up my Hubby with baked goods but the Man can eat them non-stop without gaining an inch! Me I'll probably get a little fluffier every year but I LOVE to bake and enjoy eating it too. Hey if you have to die you may as well die happy!

Dee my goal is nines, of course, but no sign of them yet. The darkest I've had is an 8, from only 1 hen. (they aren't in the pic I don't think cause they almost always go into the hatching carton) and now that she is getting older only the end of the eggs look like 8s. The rest of the egg looks like a 7. Can't wait for my first 9! Ah the elusive 9...

Actually they drew attention to different family members because they were in the refrigerator looking around and thought it was odd so kept an eye on them. Then someone else noticed they were in the bathroom (that leads to my parents room). Everyone was eying them. Once we all started asking if anyone knew them and sharing what we saw I decided they needed to leave. It wasn't until the next day that we all figured out they were crashes. Being that my brother was only 40, it was a large gathering and easy to just slip in.
That's just creepy! Crashing a "party" where folks are mourning the loss of a dear loved one? I can't wrap my head around that one.
Crickets!!! I love crickets. They are good luck you know plus they make fantastic bait for fishing. :D

I've heard of that kind of cake. Been wanting to try it for ages. I am nuts about almond flavored stuff. Are there any bakeries within a 2 hour drive that sells them?

Wow! Lot's of chicken folks in Vegas! What's up with Northern Nevada? I've only found 2 other chicken folks within 45 mins of me (maybe they secretly know I'm from the southwest and just a transplant to Reno).

Hi, I just joined yesterday and came across your site today. I thought I would start at the begining and read my way to the end. I had to respond to this one though. I live outside of Reno, in Fernley, I am really new to owning chickens but so far am having a great time. I have at this time 6 little chicks with 4 more on the way along with 2 goslings. Winter is coming and I am only mildly worried my brood will make it through. Thanks for the invite by the way to your Nevada Post.

Good Morning Everyone!

Thank you for the well wishes... It is going to be a journey.
For anyone interested I have a created a blog feel free to follow along if so inclined.

Hahaha!!! You all remember back then when this thread was much more heavily populated by the southern part of the state? Heehee We kinda took over somewhere along the way. It could tip back the other way eventually. Back then I didn't even want to admit I was from the Bay Area so I went way back to birth and early childhood to claim being from the southwest! lol I was born and raised for the first 9 years of my life in SoCal and AZ but lived in the Bay Area for the rest of it before moving here. Since I had had a couple of unwelcome comments from Renoites when we first moved here, about being from the Bay, I was being a little overly cautious back then.

Anyway... Hi Rural Chic! Great to see you here!

Yes the young ones need to be kept warm in a brooder til they are fully feathered in but after that they should be fine out in a coop with good ventilation but free of drafts. We actually don't get near as cold here as a lot of the folks on BYC do. Most chickens are pretty hardy. What kind of chickens do you have? I bet those little goslings are adorable! I'll add you to the member page now.

Not that I know of...but I've never investigated. I absolutely love almond stuff, too. Unfortunately soren is allergic to those as well as peanuts. I am wary of baking stuff with almonds in it since it's hidden and I would hate for him to accidentally eat it. but I did read that almond extract actually isn't made of almonds so I guess the flavoring would be ok for him but usually you also add some almonds to whatever it is as well. food allergies are a real bummer...

That's for sure! I'm allergic to peppers and onions so I know what a pain in the behind they are.
