Nevadans?

My poor dh - we have two daughters at home, 13 & 11 yrs old, their hormones are totally raging right now - then add 7 pullets with hormones all over!! Call us the House of Estrogen!

Dh finished the roof yesterday - Nest boxes are in - roosting planks (2x4s) are going in today - finish painting this evening - got feed & feeders (well, dh is going to make them today - his "honey do" list is getting longer and longer:lol:) - if I can't find any poultry nipples, I will just use an open container like you said, Genny - got some left over window tint I am going to use on the big window.

I am trying not to stress but I think I am finally getting more excited than stressed!

Genny - please let me know when a good time will be to pick up my gals!

I will post pics of the coop when the computer comes home.

SparksNv, lol wow.

Congrats on the progress, it sounds exciting!

Echetino, i was thinking, and i do believe i found a solution: Control the weather!! My girls were out last week during those storms, and thunder cracked really loud, and they all at once went running to the coop. I was in the doorway at the time, but that didnt stop them. Oh dear, i felt bad for them but i could stop laughing either. Poor guys.

Ahh, Sunny i just did the math and mine are 18 weeks.

I have ages to go before i get eggs. Do Chateclers lay lay speckld eggs or somthing? Ideal said they do, but another place said no..? Anyone know?

From August 1st through August 8th the Discovery Channel is featuring all sorts of intense shows about these fascinating denizens of the deep. I'm such a fan of these action-packed educational programs that I've now learned how to identify 10 different species of sharks by sight...which, admittedly, is kinda not useful when you live in the desert. BUT IF, per chance, I were near or in the ocean I could identify the shark by its fin and snoutful of teeth...and whether or not I'd be a tasty morsel.

Evonne mentioned that sharks eat chickens. My question is what kind of chickens are in the ocean? (A drowned wet one, no doubt). I'm not so sure "Chicken of the Sea" qualifies......

I appreciate you looking out for me. How is your search going for Uno's companion?

From what I just read Chanteclers do not lay a speckled egg but if it came from Ideal and they say their birds do, then they should know. Hatchery birds are not pure breds and whatever they mixed them with (to improve production, health, size...) may have given them a speckled egg. I have an RIR that lays a speckled egg.

Chanteclers are considered "early maturing" (according to Henderson's breed chart) so you could get eggs in a couple of weeks.

Ok here's a pic of my marans' eggs. I should have taken the pic outside in the early morning or evening cause the color does not look exactly like this in person. They are not quite so red and the marans' egg on the right is actually lighter than it looks in the pic (the black glaze on that side of the bowl may be throwing it off). The one in the front, center is a little darker than shown but the others are more true to life. The flash seems to wash out the one's closest to it. In fact the egg on the right would probably not be considered a true marans' egg. She would be classified a mutt unless her eggs darken up (sometimes it takes a few days for the color glands to kick in all the way).
Since I am not breeding or showing them, I don't really care. I got these pullets for a good price and the eggs are cool looking to me.

They are still very small, but not as small as the peewee eggs from Sweet Cheeks and Silver Belle also pictured here (aren't they cute?).

The other eggs in the pic are Orp and RIR eggs.

I actually got a chick that was 2 wks older from the lady I got Uno from (as an egg). It's a whitish one from McMurray and is HUGE in comparison. Uno has calmed down now that I have it home in the peepshow w/a buddy. But, I still am looking...! I'm worried that the bigger one will pick on Uno as they get older, so I want a few more about the same size. There is a lady selling Buff Orps, but after watching my super fluffy Rachel hen suffer through this heat, I really would rather not. Is there a feed store there that has chicks? I would consider the drive.

Sunny...beautiful eggs!

I have to tell you, I too am fascinated by sharks - my 13 yo dd & I were watching one of the shows last night.

While we were in Cabo 2 weeks ago, I was swimming just off shore - water was about 10 ft deep. The water is very clear - like Tahoe - visibility is really far. The area has alot of boat and jet ski traffic so I really didn't think there would be any large fish but.... I saw a large shadow around/under me and I looked above to see if it was a pelican flying and casting a shadow - no pelican - then I hear my 2 daughters, who were standing in knee deep water, yelling that there is something under me - I am not a great swimmer - but I swam back to shore as fast as I could!

Still don't know what it was - there are sharks there but I am sure it was some other large fish. I'm just glad it happened on the day we were leaving Cabo!

Coop update: Coop is **ta-da** finished! We painted last night & will post pictures when my computer, eventually, comes home!

Does anyone know where I can get poultry nipples to water the hens with? Right now I am just going to provide water in a couple of our dog bowls.

Thanks!

SparksNV I need to get some more nipples myself. I will see if I can find the link to the place I ordered them last time. they had a good price but the nipples tend to drip at times. not real bad though. they have been holding up just fine for the last 6 or 7 weeks with no indication they will fail any time soon. The birds take right to them. If you need to get some maybe we can place one order and split the shipping. This is where I got them. http://www.qcsupply.com/qcsupply/browse/productDetailWithPicker.jsp?productId=420006&categoryId=&fromPage=cart

I
just realized this morning that we are at day 14 with the most recent eggs. I have been so busy that I havn't even had tome to get nervous yet. Guess I gotta get caught up now. I did not even candle them. 5 are due to hatch in 5 to 7 days and 7 more ten days later. we also have some in the egg carton waiting to go in the incubator. Looks like I might have some birds to offer in t he next couple of weeks.
