Nevadans?

We are moving to Vegas soon * husband and I are both military and ETS'ing but moving to his home state :) ). I was wondering what types of chickens do the best in that dry hot climate. I am hoping to not get a too aggressive breed and looking for breeders :)
Penedesenca are about as heat hardy as they get. They are not people chicken but not aggressive do not eat a lot and lay tons of brown sometimes very dark brown eggs

Hi everyone,
just wondering whether anyone has some kind of advice, my Golden Sex Link Goldilocks has been acting a bit off lately, she's been seeming a little lethargic and once when I came up to her she just stood there, they usually run away when you come up to them, but she just stood sort of hunkered down like someone was about to peck her (she's lowest on the pecking order). Is she dehydrated? Is nothing wrong? I'm keeping her inside for the night to supervise her and see any other symptoms there might be. I'll update you guys if there's something else. Oh one more thing: her poo is a milky brown color, small, and a bit runny.

That just sounds like a ceca poop... normal. She may have been hot or if she's the bottom bird, does she have food in her crop tonight?

Whatever is wrong, kind of hard to say with what you listed, I would get her some plain unsweetened yogurt. It will help her immensely in many many ways. If she is reluctant to eat it at first, mix it into her pellets or whatever you feed her.

Update: Goldilocks just laid an egg. It doesn't have a shell, just a translucent membrane. She's done this only once before. I took a picture, here it is:

I'll give her yogurt in the morning, right now she's asleep and needs her beauty rest. I have gotten her to drink ice water, have laid a wet towel over part of her cage, and put some ice in so she's not hot anymore, but she WAS panting when I brought her in. She has access to food while I'm keeping her inside, however her crop was empty but when I put her in front of food she wasn't interested in eating, she did eat some scratch though. Please help! I have no idea what this is.

She needs calcium. Give her some lay pellets and/or oyster shells. She was panting because she was having a hard time with that egg. Hot days makes it worse as they lose minerals and electrolytes through panting. Get some vit/electrolyte powder to put in their water and make sure they have calcium of some sort available.

Alfalfa is high in calcium as are many other dark green leafy veggies. In an emergency I have done this: take a calcium capsule (bought for me) that also has magnesium in it (it is needed in order to absorb calcium). I'll crush the pill if it is hard or use a portion of an opened capsule and mix it into some yogurt. My birds love yogurt and so I know it will get eaten. Works wonders!

Hi everyone, I just have a question. One of my leghorns, Mable, is always running into the coop when one of the other chickens goes in there, like she's checking on them. They could be doing anything, from getting a drink of water, to eating, to going to lay an egg. She always runs in, like she's in a hurry, but most of the time she just leaves right after going in. She doesn't chase them out or anything, so it's kind of weird. I only have 3 layers (well 4 starting today), this particular hen, my other leghorn (Lucy) and my red sex link (Berta). Also, when Berta goes in to lay, Mable runs in there and kind of messes with her, not aggressively, but like she'll sit right next her in the box, or she'll try to get in front or back Berta and peck around like she's looking for food. I notice that it sometimes stresses Berta out and messes up her laying process. I was just wondering if someone on here knew what the heck is going on with Mable. Is this just normal chicken behavior or is it something else?
I'm still relatively new to chickens, so I have no clue, lol.

Are you getting eggs every day from these hens? I have one hen who is in a pen with another of my hens. Every time the other hen is in the nest, this other one waits by the nest. I'm pretty sure she's waiting for the egg to be laid so she can get in there and eat it. Both of these girls are on my cull list and I've been really busy the last couple weeks and just haven't gotten around to it but their numbers are up next. So... your story made me think of my one hen so maybe Mable is eating the laid egg?

She has acess to layer pellets. Would sav-a-chick packets work or are they only for chicks? Should I also give this to my other chickens (I have 2 others), as they have also been panting? If not Sav-a-chick, could you recommend another brand? And will they eat dried alfalfa like you give to horses or should I try to obtain some other dark green leafy veggies? Thanks!
