Okay. Just a comment on media production and intent from a former scholar of media communications: This may come across as a Debbie Downer and it is not trying to be, but.....
I saw the "Cluckster" piece on Fox News last night. Somehow the timing of it just struck me as unsettlingly odd.... Here Leslie is promoting backyard chickens and the urban farm movement (yahhh!
) on the near eve of the information session /gathering that she cancelled.... I don't quite get that.
Seems like the cause could've been furthered GREATLY if there was a tie-in to a gathering/seminar. Glad she got the info out, but seems like a wasted media opportunity for CLUCK in general. It could've been so much more....and I guess that's just my disappointment. So be it.
Loved the Del, btw. Cute bird!
From a production standpoint (not that non-camera people or folks on the street have a say in that) it would've really cool to see, for instance, a basket of eggs or a kid hollding an egg carton full of colorful hen fruit... Promote those eggs! Neighbors may have qualms about being near (beneficial) poo-producing birds, but EGGS are the golden salvation of neighborhood chickens.
Overall, though, EXTREMELY glad to see some positive chicken PR.
Eglyntine ! Thanks for your info on the petting zoo
I was giving away my silkie rooster and my Easter egger pullet. I wanted to home them together to make a transition to a new flock easier, but after watching them for a few days, I've found that she's kind of afraid of the roo, so o took her off cl. I did find a home for my roo, but thanks for showing interest! I am integrating two new hens into my flock tonight, and based on how it goes I may be giving away one of my pullets, since five might be too many for my coop. I know lacy and ron were interested in my easteregger, but if you're trying to build a flock, I might have someone for you by the end of the weekend. Let me know

Well let me know when you are ready. I live in Sun Valley so we do not have rooster restrictions here and every morning is a rooster crowing contest. My neighbours actually were giving me a hard time for not having a rooster or two already. One of my neighbours is actually trying to get me to add geese and guineas to the growing menagerie. He's in his 70's and I guess he used to have all kinds of farm animals over on his lot but when his kids grew up the wifey got rid of everything so he's really happy to see us going down this road. I think the neighbourhood would have a different outlook if I added guineas, they are so LOUD. *LOL*
I am looking to get Orpintons, Wyndottes, and Australorps as my main laying community but I love the fancy breeds too and was hoping to add a few to the mix just for the novelty of having them. Chickens make amazing pets and my boys love them already. I already have 3 Barred Rocks/Dominques (I haven't been able to get a positive yet as they weren't taken that good of care of and were moulting really badly when I got them) and 3 Legbars. Anyone that has extras that they would like to find a good, happy home, let me know because I love all breeds and they will be spoiled rotten.

Awwwww!!! She looks so cute checking out the other chickens! Yes all my Dels are SUPER friendly.
So glad everything is going so well. Her name was Snowball but she wasn't used to the name. You should name her whatever you want.
Holly your son looks so cute, handling those birds like a pro! What a huge help he must be.
As far as football season goes, I am a long time fan but I know the rivalry thing can get out of hand (especially here in Nevada where we don't have our own pro team to root for) so I am going to stay mute on this topic for now.
This is not typical of me, as most of you know, so enjoy it while you can... I don't know how long I can resist!
Eglyntine so good to see another Nevadan on here! I'm trying to keep a roo, here on my little city lot, but he's getting extremely vocal lately and I may have to either move out of the city or find him another place to roost. Hoping, hoping, hoping I can keep him but one of my neighbors may not think that's such a great idea.
If it gets to be a problem I'll let you know. I may have a bird or 2 next spring but nothing right now. Anyway, Welcome to the Nevada thread!!!!!
SparksNV forgot to say, love the new coop! I don't have any extra gals right now for your neighbor but I hope someone else on here does.
Hello everybody, I'm still here, barely! Any big weekend plans?

NV thread. If you birds have a single comb they are Barred Rocks and a rose comb if they are Dominiques. (Of course they might be cuckoo Marans or some conglomerate too!
) Hey, I can fix you up with roosters, you just have to come and get 'em.
I've got Lt. Brahmas and Ameraucanas though.
Sunny, I would have to say that the Dels are some of the best. I wonder how vegaschick's are coming along. Come on, you know you can't keep the football thing to yourself. Around here it's the Cardinals, and I don't even follow football. When do we get a 'bator update?
Have a great weekend, all.
BTW, it looks like we will have some Dwarf Nigerian babies this fall.
PETA????? Why in the world would anyone ask PETA their opinion on any domestic animal? It is always "NO! NO! It's unhealthy/exploitive/awful-icky poo do-do."

Hey good to see you here! Sounds like your operation is shifting all the way over to goats. Good luck with the new babies!
I know I need to hunt down the last couple of items I need to start putting this incubator together. The problem is I'm so cheap I hate to pay for things unless I feel like I'm getting a good deal. I still need insulation and the sheet metal lining. I used to work in a machine shop so I never had to pay much (if anything) for scrap pieces of sheet metal before. I can't believe how much they want around here for a couple pieces of sheet metal!
I wanted to use it to mount the heating plates to and to provide a short wall in front of the plates, with a fan at the bottom to pull the heat down and into the main chamber. That last was one of your suggestions and I love the idea! It regulates and disperses the heat safely and more evenly.
Anybody have a machine/sheet metal shop connection here in Reno? Or know where I can get some sheet metal pieces real cheap? I really wanted to line the whole thing with sheet metal (stainless steel) for easy cleaning. Stainless steel also has natural anti-bacterial properties that appeal to me for obvious reasons. I could scavange some SS counters and chop them up (yes I know it's a little harder than that) but even old used ones are pretty pricey. I can use SS tiles that aren't too costly but the 2 back panels need to be more rigid.
*sigh* OK, I'll admit that I'm a Niners' fan and even though they are not much to brag about these days I never seem to accept that. I'm always hoping that this is the year they are going to make a comeback.
I know they've had a decent preseason but as any Niner fan knows, that doesn't mean much. In fact they often play really well until it matters or play really badly until it doesn't matter (which really aggravates me cause they only mess up their chance for first round draft picks).
But seriously! They look a lot better this year!
That's OK. I was a Ram's fan first (was born in So Cal waaaay before the Rams moved to SL) so I was used to dissapointment. In fact I was shocked when the Rams actually killed there for a few seasons (yes I'm counting the years they came close as well as the Superbowl XXXIV win). For those who don't know, the Rams had never won a Superbowl before that and hadn't even won an NFL championship game since 1951 which was before my time so I had to look it up. I grew up cheering for the losing team so except for the Montana/Rice/Young years and the '99-'03 seasons for the Rams I'm used to it.
We were season ticket holders for many years and paid the highest prices in the league for one of the lousiest parks! Candlestick is a miserable place to be! The last year we had tickets DH said if they couldn't win at least four regular season games then that was it! Well they didn't and we quit paying the exhorbitant prices for those tickets. Last I heard we weren't the highest priced anymore.
I believe Dallas has that distinction now but it really is a beautiful stadium! Although I heard that the Niners' management team plans to raise prices again soon. No they are not planning on doing anything to improve Candlestick (or what ever sponser's name they are calling it currently, it changes often) just plan on charging more.
OK, you asked! I did warn you that you should enjoy my silence on this subject! Heaven help you now if either of my teams start doing really well! You can all blame ke_ben if I get insufferable!
Now I'll probably erase most of this the next time I log on and read how ridiculous it all sounds.
I've done it before since I write some pretty strange things at night when I'm tired and sleep deprived (wait, that's redundant. Of course you're tired when you're sleep deprived).
Quote:
OK, I know I'm tired but this has gone right over my head and I don't think sleep will help any. What is rule #2? If it has to do with the video it all makes sense cause I watched it but my speakers are on the blink so I had no sound. I miss sound...

I am right there with you, I have never lived anywhere that scrap pieces of anything or just basic trash is so expensive. "It's going in the dump unless you pay me over brand new prices" seems to be the motto around here. I do not mean to bash "Nevadans", I really do not even think that most of the ppl I talk to about their "trash" are really Nevadans anyway but it is still mind blowing to me how the system works around here and I have lived here 11 years. You would think that I would be used to it by now. Ok so I will keep an eye out for you, I know a couple of ppl I can ask who know someone who knows someone.

BIG TIME Niners fan here, I had the biggest crush on Joe growing up. I have always had a weird and very strange outlook on football and from what I can tell so do you. You see, *coughclearsthroatwhispersquickly* I am admitted 49'er's fan AND Dallas. *completesilence* Yes it is true. My parents were HUGE Dallas fans back in the glory days and thus that made us kids Dallas fans but then in the late late late 80's Joe/Rice/Young hit the scene and it was like reliving those Dallas glory days. The underdogs were making a comeback and no one could stop their superhuman team abilities.
Although I have never really been that big on watching football during the season, I do keep track of how the teams are doing until the finale and I always have this huge lump in my throat and a silent prayer goes up that I will see the 49'ers again at the Superbowl kicking some superior ass.
This is actually the first place that I have lived where the home team was someone that I was rooting for. You have no idea what it is like to live in Miami and be a HUGE 49'ers/Dallas fan. It is like taking your life into your own hands. I actually went to a Panthers/Steelers game in Charlotte, NC (when I lived in Raleigh) and sat on the Panther's side of the stadium rooting for the Steelers. Which are my mortal enemies because of being such a huge Dallas fan but when your team is not there you have to recognize the next best thing and go for it.
Ok, how is that for late night/early morning rambling? Am I in? Are we kindred spirits yet?
