Nevadans?

I had alligator sauce picante (a sort of Cajun chili - SparksNV will probably kill me for saying that

) once in Baton Rouge - it was excellent! The only times I've had goat was in Indian goat curry, which I also thought was great. I would probably try guinea pig - I consider myself kind of adventurous when it comes to food. Though I do draw the line at certin things like escargot.

You could fry just about anything in garlic and butter and it would taste good, but that doesn't mean I'm going to try it.

I've tried escargot. It was ok at first but after a couple of chews the garlic and butter were not strong enough to hide the flavor of the snail.

It was also too rubbery in texture! Love calimari though (if it's made right). I'm making the sauce for eggplant parmesan right now (been working on it for 2 days). It is smelling sooooo good!!! This food talk is keeping my mind off of sneaking downstairs to do some more sampling!

It only needs to cook for 8 hours to be really good but with my back I have to tackle these things in pieces. Plus I'm making about 28 quarts of it so the kids and my folks can all have some and DH and I can freeze some for leftovers. It's our Son-in-law's birthday and it's his favorite. He always wants extra sauce cause he likes to eat it plain.

What's your favorites? I'm a foodie and this is one of my favorite subjects.

A lonnnnnng time ago (couple score) I was invited to a buffet at Harvey's up at So. Lake Tahoe and it was their Big Game extravaganza because there was all sorts of stuff that wouldn't grace any sort of American table. The upshot of this is that now I can say I've eaten lion (not so great), gnu, kangaroo (it was good), gator, bear, hippo, turtle, snake, antelope(s), boar and a bunch o' other stuff I cannot remember. But, aside from the excellent turtle soup, I really couldn't say it was too memorable (smothered in gravy, it all seemed alike after a bit save for some was chewier than others) and I wouldn't trade American fare for any of it.

Plenty of U.S. game has crossed my plate...does that count? Okay. Venison, elk, pheasant, quail, duck, turkey, hare, chukkar, wild boar, snake, gator.

Now, traveling abroad I have sampled escargot (I like!) and some weird little crunchy sparrow in France and all sorts of interesting seafood dishes in the Carribean (conch, turtle, sea cucumber). I've had rabbit but not Guinea Pig...and probably wouldn't because I raised them as pets. Haven't ever tried goat and wouldn't want to as I raised those, too, as pets. Once upon a time in France I inadvertently ate horse. It was in a burger and at the first bite I knew it wasn't an all-beef patty. Ugh.

Sunny.... Favorite foods? Don't go there. Whim and fancy. Some days I dream of a nice leg o' lamb. Lately, though, I've been on a southwest kick and really into New Mexican cuisine utilizing LOTS of roasted chile peppers.

!

You have to invite me to your son's birthday party. I am an eggplant parmigiana hound. That is without a doubt my all time favourite. Well that and really goooood beef stroganoff.

I have had all kinds of weird stuff to eat. I did have the chance to eat lion the same time I ate the giraffe but I passed. I just could not get past the big "kitty" image. I do not know why it is no big deal to eat my pet chickens, goats, cows but I cannot bring myself to eat horse, dog, cat. Although I have been to a lot of places around the world where I am sure they have snuck in all three without my "asking".

I was in Thailand for a business trip and everyone got together at this local Thailand place to eat and I swear it would remind you exactly of that scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom when they all sit down to eat at the palace. Yo do not know how many time I had to tell one of the directors, "Just do not ask..."

Fixed properly, goat is just as good as venison or elk. It must be a New England thing because they eat quite a bit of goat up there and I have my entire life. Now I love goat but I cannot stand lamb most of the time. Even my dogs will eat a super gamey elk burger over lamb. It definitely is either love it or hate it meat.

I have had alligator before, about 7 years ago at the cajun festival they had deep friend alligator on a stick and I had to try it. It was actually very good. Like a chicken/fish on a stick. Not something I am going to add to my dinner menu but still not bad at all.

Ok off to the store, you all are making me so hungry.

OK, lion, hippo and gnu? That is definitely exotic! Love rabbit meat and have had lamb that I loved and some that I didn't so I'm thinking the cook has a lot to do with it. Have had buffalo which I love!!! But never had horse meat (that I know of). Have had most local game meats like boar and venison so I don't think they count. Would love to try pheasant but I think I'll pass on the crunchy sparrows!

A lot of people make turtle soup but I've never tried it. Wouldn't mind though.

Eglyntine, you and Peep_Show have eaten some strange fare and I'll take your advise, I won't ask!

As far as the egg plant parmigiana (the proper way to say it, I know), it is an experiment. The sauce I'm using is my lasagna sauce, which is a specialty of mine. We are heading down to our daughter's 30th birthday party this weekend and since her husband's (our son-in-law) birthday is the week after I decided to make my sauce for him (he's totally addicted to it, his words) but since I brought lasagna the last time we visited I thought I would substitute eggplant instead (his favorite these days) so I'm going to use an italian eggplant, peeled and sliced lengthwise, breaded with spices and panko, then fried in olive oil (the sauce is seriously to die for and eggplant is great at absorbing flavors so it should be good no matter what).

I hope I can find fresh mozzarella here in Reno. The last time I went they were sold out. Fresh parmesan is easier to find here and I thought I'd mix a little fontina in with the mozzarella. Hopefully it will be as good as my lasagna.

SparksNV you've had the worst luck with your computer lately! Hope you get it back soon!

Thanks all for the sympathy and well wishes.

Peep Mustang is about 7 yrs old – been titled since he was 1.5 yrs or so. Supposedly had 30 days put on him about a yr ago (highly doubtful anyone really worked with him). Never been haltered that the current owners know – they have had him for about a yr. PBR

Sunny As far as I know, HR is not crowing yet. Course Frpl is not either. They are in my shed coop, with a bunch of pullets and two other cockerels (a blue/buff orp and Obby’s son) and a cochin cockerel – all three of whom are crowing or starting – but I have not heard or seen the Ams try. Ams also have not shown any interest yet in “girls”. Ok, the trio is yours if you want them after you see them. I might try to get a video of them in the next day or so.

Thanks for calling – I hope I made some sense, I had taken a pill & they make me ramble more and jump around topics.

Aubrey Thanks so much for the bird complements. Yes, I do plan on continuing my orp projects – they are so much fun.

Sparks – Thanks for the offer – I’m seeing Dr. Glen Miller – know him/of him? Football

Eglyntine – put out more feeders and water dishes for your gang. That way one group doesn’t monopolize the area. Lots of water stations are a good thing.

Food –

OK - on the computer at the library...

So, ya'll have eaten some weird food!!! Alligator yes - not bad! Have to tell ya'll a story. So my dh and I had been together about 6 months & I took him home to Tickfaw, LA to see my family. Down south, the convience stores all carry boiled shrimp, crab & crawfish (you buy it with your beer and gas for your pickup). So this one store we were in to buy my shrimp, had some chest freezers - like the kind you can find ice cream in (with the clear sliding lid). We were looking in them - to see what they had - my dh stopped and pointed, "WHAT IS THAT?!???" Well, it was a possum all dressed and ready for da gumbo pot! (you could see it's little clawed feet). Those crazy cajun's don't let anything go to waste! I miss Louisiana.....

talk with ya'll later....soon as my 'puter gets outta ICU....
