My mom was born in Ft. Worth. Grandma, however, was born on a farm on the banks of the Brazos River near what is now Whitney, Texas. In fact, the farm is now under the waters of Whitney Lake (thank you Army Corps of Engineers)! I would love to get your recipe as both mom and grandma are gone now.

Sure thing, I'll PM it to ya.

Anything to keep the Grandma From Texas Chicken & Dumplings recipe a live and kickin'!

Sunny, you don't have to be talented nor even have special ingredients to make ricotta. I use a crockpot and it is super easy. Heat up 2 quarts of whole milk on High for 45 minutes. Add 1 cup buttermilk, 1 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. sugar and stir. Heat for 15 minutes on High and add 3 Tbs. white vinegar. Cook on High for 1.0 to 1.5 hours. Turn off crockpot and let rest for 30 minutes. Pour into colander lined with cheesecloth (or smooth nap dish towel). Hang or squeeze out excess fluid. Save some whey for storing cheese in and give the rest to the chickens.

Mozzarella takes a bit more hands-on with the kneading and stretching... I like my cheese quick and easy!

(I do add some extra cream or Half & Half for extra richness in the ricotta) Bon Appetite!...

Thank you sooo much Peeps! it's impossible to get really good, fresh ricotta here (in my neighborhood anyway). I guess it's time to buy another crock pot since mine broke during our last move.

Eglyntine good luck on the coop! Post pics when it's done!

Genny, that would be no problem at all!!! I love the sauce over angel hair spaghetti with itailian sausage slices (the sausage simmer in the sauce for 8 hours so I have plenty) then I cover it with cheese! Yuuuu-um! You know how much I love to feed people and angel hair only takes 4 minutes to cook. Should I bring enough for your Hubby too? I can add some spinach leaves if you like it florentine style (I love both).

That is super nice Sunny - extra for Hubby - but he does not like red sauce, so it will be for me

Hello all,

Just checking in. I've had a very full summer. Some good, some bad.

We had a lovely trip to Phoenix for my mothers 80th b-day. Got to see all 7 of my siblings together in one place for the first time in many years. Unfortunately my littlest (3) got sick on the way and we had to take him to the e-room in Phoenix.

The oldest of this years chicks have started laying eggs but most of my adults have gone into molt and so I'm getting very few eggs right now. I've ramped up the oyster shells but there's really only so much you can do. They have to molt.

Question. Anyone seen a good price on Blazemaster pellets around this year? My husband has found some for $228 a ton but we've done better than that in past years, so we are still looking.

Well I need to feed the little ones.

Have a great day/weekend

Hello Nevadans and welcome to all the new folk. How's everybody weekend shaping up?

Well it does not do any one any good if it is held 100% secret and no one gets to enjoy it.

And I am definitely starving.... thanks to Sunny I will be making chicken parm this week. Although I saw Master Chef's finale and I am contemplating making veal milanese instead.

Bought the wood for the frame of the coop yesterday. 50 2X4's to start. I was really hoping to find everything on CL's to help someone clean out their yard, etc. but alas it did not happen. It seems like every time I see a bunch of stuff on craigs for cheap or free, by the time I decide I am going to start a project then no one has anything available..

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Finished our shopping now just some down time...

I found a heated dog water dish at the Walmart in Spanish Springs for $8 - originally about $15. They had about 8 more don't know if the other walmarts have them. I plan on using it this winter.

Got the compost bin going - but it is not warm yet - how long does that take, does anyone know?

Still waiting the impossible...no eggs...

Here's the coop at night..
