Nevadans?

Yeah! In getting alot of feedback from people who think it is terrible for us to be celebrating someones death and that at this point we are no better than those who celebrated when we got attacked but I just can't get begins that comparison. I'm happy that the families of the victims finally have some closure, not to mention the thousands of other victims all around the world that have died in the past 20 years because of this man. Hopefully now we can take the right steps toward disintegrating al quieda all together and bringing our soldiers home!

all you NV folks! It's great to see you here! I'm especially glad to welcome Autumn1234 and Eatin'Dirt! There's just not enough chicken folk down south so every person helps. Let us know what kind of birds you have in your flocks and how long you've been chickening (?) ... not sure if that quite came out right.

I live in the SW part of town, Mtn's Edge area. I have 4 kids: two daughters ages 8 & almost 2 and two sons ages 6 & almost 4. They are very supportive of our illegal chicken population

My kiddos and I hatched 5 chicks in a homemade incubator April 19th (it was a very exciting day!) and then we inherited 5 chicks who were hatched March 30th at a nearby elementary school. This is our first time having chickens as a family but I had some growing up. I don't remember much about taking care of them but we lived in a small rural town and they were free-range so it's going to be a whole new experience this time anyways. I don't have any idea what kind of chickens they are and I'll definitely need help sexing them soon. We aren't zoned for livestock so I want to keep only hens. Oh yeah, I did buy 4 chicks from IFA April 22nd. Two Ameracauna (I've read somewhere that that term is obsolete but I'm pretty sure that's what they called them), one RIR & one white leghorn. I think that's what they said they are. Whatever they are they're adorable!!! So yeah, we have 14 chicks total haha. I think our coop can house 6-8 comfortably so we'll have to downsize sometime.

I do have a couple questions for y'all too:
Have any of you Las Vegans ever looked at the laws regarding chickens and seen what needs to be done to change them? I'm just curious. I figure it would be difficult but maybe worth a shot.
Also, we built a coop with three solid sides + one side with chicken wire to help the ventilation. I am worried about the heat come summertime. Have any of your chickens had trouble with the heat? Any tips to combat it? I've thought about moving the nesting boxes (or putting a new one) into a shaded part of the run and shutting the coop in the heat of the day. Good idea?

Anyways, I scoured this forum when my chicks were hatching and because of all the info here we had a successful hatch. We started with 8 eggs that I was obsessed with candling, 1 was an early quitter and the rest went into lockdown. We had 5 hatch (Two I wrapped in a wet paper towel after they had been pecking out their initial pip for hours, within 10 minutes they were zipping and hatched within 30mins. It was a great tip, thanks BYC!). One pipped but didn't hatch and then one never pipped. I fancy myself a scientist

so I cracked them open when I was sure they were dead. The one that pipped but didn't hatch just hadn't completely absorbed it's yolk sac and the one that never pipped had it's intestines on the outside. The pip of the one that didn't hatch was different from all the rest too. It was in the middle of the egg on the bottom and the membrane around it looked a little bloody too. I was sad it didn't make it but I wasn't surprised. I know that's a lot of info about our little hatch I've just been dying to tell someone all the details but nobody else cares haha.

LOL Autumn1234 - we all care! Thanks for the update and how about posting some pics of your hatch and flock? We love pics around here!

Im in Vegas but an area rural area & are allowed to have chickens. I read in city limits you can have hens, no roosters. Mine like to stand in water, a get shallow bucket for them & shade. My coop is a 3 sided coop. Then a 3 months or so my husband puts up wood & closes it in. We get very windy & colder on the northwest, west as possible. & Then we had snow the last 2 yrs, it didn't stay but cold enough for it to be closed in.

Your allowed to have hens, but you have to get permission from your neighbors. I think there is a form involved. I've been back in town for a year or two now and haven't had anyone complain. knock on wood. I have three rosters. So you will probably be fine with your hens. I think it's easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission. As far as the heat I try to keep them in a shady spot. On the real hot days i put a frozen 2 leader bottle of water in the coop, but I don't think it does anything because they wont lay against it like rabbits will.
