havent really decided lol. my neighbor has easter eggers and id love some thing that gave super dark brown eggs....but I change my mind every other day on which breeds I want to order. ive been heavily considering doing a assortment order from a hatchery that sexes picking out my favorites once they feather and giving my neighbor the rest. As she has never seen a hen she could pass up this works well for me

That's the way most of us got started. Right now I am fighting the temptation to order white peafowl. I can only get one big thing for spring besides my marans and the layers that are already coming. Why am I so drawn to the pea fowl? Must be tired and a little insane. Maybe some sleep will cure me. Good night all!

hmn as cackle hatchery still dose the surprise assortment I think im going to order that hehe...im going to call tomorrow and ask if I dont have a set date if their is any way they can throw in a royal palm turkey pretty please.

Of course you aren't insane! I want peas too! And I have been checking out the whites lately. I've had a couple on the past, but no white and sure don't have the room for them here, darn it!

I have a Uncle who has Pea's. He loves them. You must build special roosts for them though because of their long, long tails. His roosts are really high up for them.

Aubrey, I am also firing up my bator today to get it ready but Im waiting on eggs being shipped from GA today. You are more than welcome to save up any eggs you have over the next few days and bring em over here free of charge for hatching. I have a Genesis bator. It has all the bells and whistles and turner so it does everything by itself pretty much. I have put 10 day old eggs(stored at room temp and turned) in and still had em hatch perfectly.I have almost 100% hatch rate from my own eggs and less from ones Ive gotten shipped for obvious reasons. I have tons of room so if you wanna squeeze 1 or 20 in thats ok with me.

Ah Ha! I have proof and Aubrey is correct. This guy found one of them in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge near Lemmon Valley! Way to go Aubrey!

I had to correct the location, the guy who found the bird lives in the Las Vegas area but the bird itself was in Lemmon Valley.

Stillwater is nowhere near Lemmon Valley. Stillwater NWR is northeast of Fallon! It's a really cool place BTW; I highly recommend a trip out there!

im also ordering 15 more call duck ducklings in two weeks hopefully but I think im going to build them a seperate run so they can have a pool without being scared of having to find dead chickens floating in thier water. cackle hatchery has a surprise assortment bargin that im considering because ive read that you can get chicks, ducks, geese, turkeys of unknown numbers all in one shipment.

This June, my son brought me a soaking-wet 8-week-old pullet, with my husband trailing behind saying, "I didn't know chickens could swim." They were running around the garden for one of their first times, and I hadn't yet wired in the slats in the fence (the one behind me in the profile) and they hadn't yet learned that there were dogs on the other side of the fence. Tater was immediately intrigued with Barbeque, and she flapped away... right into the pond. And swam right to the side, where my husband scooped her out. I dried her off like the freaked out mama that I was, cuddled her a little (I'm a bit obsessed with them) and put her back in the coop. So now I don't worry as much about them getting into the pond.

There are a few videos on Youtube of chickens swimming. I guess the real danger isn't whether they can swim, it's whether they can get OUT of the water before getting waterlogged and exhausted.

When I was deciding where to get my chicks, I noticed that Meyer and Ideal also let you mix/match whatever you want. I compared shipping, though, and for me Ideal was the best... I went in with Elizabeth and we saved even more on shipping. I hear great things about Meyer, though I've never gotten birds from them. Totally awesome selection, though. You can go onto their website and request a free catalog.

My daughter wants peafowl. My husband wants a couple of turkeys. I was considering the turkeys for a few weeks, just letting them strut around the yard until time to butcher them. But a friend told me how destructive they are to gardens, and I have some planter boxes in the yard that I'm planning to fence off from the chickens. So I decided that we'd buy a Thanksgiving turkey from someone else so I could grow my greens. It's easier to find organic turkey than a wide variety of organic greens.

If I got a turkey I'd want a royal palm, but they're so pretty I wouldn't want to butcher them. A broad-breasted wouldn't fly out of the yard, though. They couldn't make it over the fence! When my mom raised them, the largest white tom was 50lbs DRESSED OUT. We had to saw it in half to even fit it in the oven.

My dad tried peafowl once on 3.5 acres of land. The noise wasn't a problem, because they're all country people and that's the least of their issues. But he kept getting calls from confused neighbors wondering why there were peacocks on their roofs.
