Well heres my beginner MealWorm Farm. I just put layer crumbles, oatmeal and wheat germ in a big shallow container(about 2 inches thick)added 1,100 worms and put potato chunks in for required wetness. They are growing like weeds already! Ill keep you updated on my progress!

Very cool, Cecelia! I need to start doing that. Are the meal worms just for chicken treats or can you use them in gardening, too?

Very nice Cecilia,

I've been doing the meal worms since September and it's the best thing I've done to get more protein into the flock.

In the last picture you can see one of my super worms turning into an pupae. It should take it about a week to finish turning.

It takes about 2 weeks for them to emerge as beetles.

Ron, you don't want to put live meal worms in the garden. They are pests and will eat your garden to bits.

It's better to use the meal worm casings instead. You can see them in the pictures, they look like empty skins.

Picture #1 is the feed bin. It's where I put the dead or unwanted bugs in and then I feed it to the chickens when I have a lot of them.

Picture #2 is the whole set-up.

Picture #3 is the nursery. I placed all the adult beetles in there once they emerged from pupae and left them in there for 8 weeks. I moved all the beetles into the multiple bins a few days ago. This is my 2nd generation bin.

Picture #4 is the multiple bin. It has adult beetles and worms in there. This is my 1st generation bin.

Sheryl, would mealworms work outside, or in an especially warm environment? My house really wouldn't have much room, except for behind the furnace (about 95 degrees in the winter) or outside somewhere.
