Just stopped in to say
Been busy - DH was home for the weekend so that filled my weekend up
Sunday, as DH was getting ready to drive out - he looks in to the yard and says "what is wrong with that duck? something is following her!" Sure enough, Aflack our 6 year old duck, brought 6 ducklings up from the pasture. She has been setting under a huge rabbit brush bush.
Processed two extra roos - an Orpington (splash/buff cross) and an Orpington/Del cross, both the same age - but the Orp/Del cross is HUGE! Will get a processed weight on them in a day or so - they are "resting"
in the fridge.
Was banging around in the kitchen this AM getting coffee and heard a horrible noise - someone was DYING. Drop my cup and out to the garage I scoot - where the dying sound was coming from - and hear it again - it is horrible, horrible - I am SURE someone is trapped and being eaten alive. I get to the trough with my MF Cochin bantam roos and one is starting to crow.
The most god awful dying noise is trying to rip its way out of his little beak. Awww hormones.
Penturner - what type of feathers? do they need to be dry plucked or would you take a wet batch? When I next process - will not be for a month or two - I have lots of feathers.

I have spent the past several weeks in the forums lurking and learning. My 6' x 6' coop and 8' x 10' run are currently under construction and it should be completed by the time I get my barred pullets from Big R on May 26th. I am so excited!!!!
So far, I only have one concern regarding my set-up. Although my property is fenced, it backs up to BLM and coyotes do frequent the area. Since the alkali soil corrodes metal, I was wondering if burying 12"x12" pavers around the base of the run might be a good deterrent. Or, can anyone think of a better, inexpensive solution?

Guess I'll have to wait until this one crows or lays an egg!

Pavers should work if they are heavy enough. When I had a similar situation I dug a trench and used large rocks on both sides of the fence to keep the critters from digging under the fence and then filled it in with gravel. It worked well and in this area there are a lot of free rocks to be found. Okay here's some of my 5 week old EE's. First the ones from KatyTheChickenLady in Idaho ...
This chick is from the now deceased Goldilocks. I think it's a girl, I'm hoping anyways. At 4 wks and at 5 wks.
This chick is from Red Riding Hood. Sadly, I'm thinking this one is most likely a boy. It is so pretty I wish I could keep it. I love the white feather on each wingtip. At 4 wks and 5 wks.
The last Idaho chick is one of Big Daddy's. I'm hoping girl. At 4 and 5 wks.
Next are EE's from evonne here in Vegas. 2 are EE/Barred Rock and one is EE/Rhode Island Red. I've been bracing myself for boys on the BR (pics at 5 wks) but the RIR (pic at 4 wks) I really think must be a girl. The Rocks are both very friendly but the Red is a squirrelly wild thang.

Had a nice chuckle over your yodeling roo story, HorseFeatherz. What I love with puberty roos is listening/watching them trying so hard to get out that first real cockadoodle.... Takes a few days for them to find their notes.

Nice diverse flock Vegaschick! I love having a huge variety of birds too. I'm still trying to figure out a couple of my 3 month old's genders so I won't even venture a guess! It is starting to look like I have a lot more pullets than I first thought though. I always do that. Guess it's my way of preparing for the worst. I'm thrilled to say that at least 6 of the 10 are female. Maybe even 7!

happy mother's day everyone!!!!
i'm starting to get settled in the new place.. the chickens have made themselves at home and pooped all over the patio....
i need to get their pens made so i can separate for breedings again....
ke_ben has been a wonderful help... and his wife is a sweetheart too.... i might take my little girl goat down to visit one of their boys.... lol...
we should be getting another member here soon, i got an email and passed n the direct link for this thread... puza2 is getting a new house in n. las vegas and looking at starting a small flock of hens, so if anyone can help out with official laws in north las vegas... i passed on what animal control had told me... but you know how that goes... lol...
oohhh puza2, i forgot to say in that email, if you are zoned ranch estate.. which is horse property basically, the only limits i found on county zoning is no pigs, and no roosters... but it didn't give anything on number limits.. i'll see if hubby can remember where he found that info...

For ordinances of North Las Vegas, go to the Chicken Laws Section of the Index and click on the L.O.R.E. link. It'll take you to the "library" link of all the cities they've got.
It's been awhile since I checked, but I think North Las Vegas is the laxest rule maker of the LV valley towns..... Much less stringent that LV or Henderson as far as placement of coops and how many.... I don't think they even have regs on roosters! (Well, I've seen plenty of roos in NLV, but what does that mean really?)
