im dont know much about silkies and polish, but i think theyll do fine with the other chickens. i have a couple silkies that are with mine and thyere pretty happy. most bantams arent really good layers to begin with, so the silkies probably wont lay a whole lot, and i dont think poolish do either.
lol but thats why everyones got the kick butt RIR or delawares.
I hope the weather holds for the holiday! yesterday was nice. warm with just a little wind. i still cat wait for that major heat wave that will get everone complianing and wanting winter back.
Nevada thread. I'm a neighbor of yours. How long have you been in the valley? Have you had a chance to check out the Warm Springs Residents blog? What kind of chickens do you have?
Hello Ya'll! I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD for 23 years and I had bantams illegally in the city there. Even a cochin rooster. I had great old school Italian neighbors. I have been in Reno for almost 8 years and have been in Pal Val for almost 6 years. I have over 100 chickens of many breeds. RIR(S), cochins(S&B), modern games(B), OEGB, american games(B), leghorns(S&B), RIW(S), EE(S&B), silkies, welsummers(S), marans(S), barred rocks(S), white faced spanish(B), cornish(B), wyandottes(S), Delawares(S), polish(S), japanese, and a bunch of crosses(S&B). I am raising turkeys, geese and chickens for a taxidermists friend of mine also. He gets the feathers and I get the meat. My chickens free range everyday and I sell a standing order of 40 dozen a month for $3 a dozen. I am so glad I found this thread
Welcome, DesertChick324! Yeppers, we're all things Nevada.
I haven't been to the Palomino Valley, but a cohort of mine gets all her mustangs (for training into saddle horses) from the facility there.

Down in SoNev we're having a gloriously warm weekend...up to the 90's. This is great for the two-week old chicks as I've got them in a battery brooder in the casita. If I don't turn on the air-con, the room stays nice and toasty and, ergo, it saves electric $$ as the brooder doesn't need to pop on all the time. May have to turn air on, though, this next week as we're slated to hit near 100....which is the opposite direction I want to go for hardening the chicks off.
evonne, your SLW's are coming along nicely! I'm sure they're looking forward to their new home (and more head room) next week. Looks like maybe 50/50 sex-wise, but I don't do chicken sexing...unless easy like the sex-links. Looks like there may be a few single comb SLW's in the bunch.... Sigh..... So knock those out of any bird show aspirations you might have...but supposedly they're more fertile (eggers) than the rose comb variety. Shipped eggs are always a crapshoot.
BTW, the only roo left of the sex-link Stars is the white one.... He's a sweetie. Doesn't mind being picked up, not aggressive or jumpy and just sits in the hand. He needs a home.....
aaawwww well i'll take him with the SLW's then... poor little guy stuck out like a ore thumb in that picture.. lol...
i'm excited to get the other birds... gotta get another outdoor brooder made, and maybe next weekend... oh wait.. next weekend we're making salsa and jelly..... maybe sunday... i need to make a juvy pen.....
i figure the ones you're bringing me and these little guys that are in my bathroom should be the same age/size.. cept the silkies are littler, but they're used to their broodmates now...... and are a week older...
anyway... yeah... i have no clue what i'm going ot do with this many baby birds when they grow up... rofl.. i htink i'm in over my head now.. lol..
thank god they stay fairly small and don't start breeding for a while.... gives me time to make these breeding pens.. lol....
so, how many birds are you bringing with you on sunday??? and how many are you taking back home?? lol...
open invitation
peepshow is coming over on saturday, and vegaschick said maybe, but if anyone else in the vegas area or logandale (ke_ben) want to come over, i'm having a learn to do boiling water canning and we're making salsa and pepper jelly, if you want to come out send me a pm and i'll give you more details.. but it's sat june 5 @noonish.... i'm making green chicken enchiladas for lunch. and they're really yummy.. and you'll take home some salsa and some jelly...
in fact, if anyone wants to come down from up-state you're welcome too, just didn't figure anyone would want to drive down.. lol..
hope everyone is having a great weekend.. it's starting to get warm out here.. but i LOVE logandale.. funny how different the weather is from 60 miles south... lol...
Welcome, DesertChick324.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. What a beautiful day here. spent all day out in the yard with my family, playing with our chicks and adult birds. They are all setting around going "What the heck got into them"?

Wow, someone that knows something about polish chickens. There are a couple of us new to the polish variety. If you look back a few posts you can see my new polish chicks and there are some posts of others asking questions about polish chickens too. Maybe you could answer some of our questions. Aside from polish chickens I'd love to see your setup. I could use some ideas on better ways to keep chickens out here in the desert.
LOL. Polish is one of the breeds I am raising for the taxidermist. I really don't like polish. They just act too retarded for my likens. My set up is very unique and I love it. I turned a 1969 holiday rambler travel trailer into a coop complete with a brooder and hospital. I wanted a nice coop that wasn't permanent. It has all the original screens and windows and I fenced around the trailer so the birds always have a dry area to dust and hang out all year long. You are welcome to come over. I live on Amy Road.
