Peep-show, thats an awesome story. When friends come to my house they really enjoy the animals too. It makes me try to not take them for granded, you know? That sucks that you dont have any more chickens though.

Urg. Everyone, my chickens all have a chicken std or something. I still am not sure what to do about it, but ive been researching. Mom wont buy medicine because she has negetive money, sooo tell me what you think: Chickens exposed to bird flu on a small country that belonged to some people who were feeding them some form of pickled cabage did Not get the disease, which was supposed to be all serious and everything. Remember? So if i feed my chicks the sourkraut in the frigde, will they get better? theres supposed to be some sort of uber health thing in cabage, so what do you all think? Know of any easy to get natural remedies to a virus that i would have on hand?

But I am just enamored with the ones I have right now! Their muffs and beards are soooo full now! Their heads look so round and fluffy with the new growth! They are just adorable!

Echetino, The coop is looking great, very nice use of a weird space. As for Inbreeding. It is commonly done but you have to be very careful to cull any defects because of it. I suggest you search the net for info and breeding systems and learn what to be on guard for. But with that I will give my 2 cents on the issue. meant mainly to give an overall idea of the problems it can cause.

Some people have allergic reactions only once in a while while others tend to be sensitive to just about anything. Now imagine a chicken that is prone to allergies. It passes that on to it's offspring. you then breed it to those offspring. their is no chance of introducing genetics that help reduce that tendency to allergies. In fact is it likely you will increase that tendency. Inbreeding is intended to magnify and increase traits. It does this very well, sadly it magnifies the bad ones just as much as the good ones. Culling for unwanted traits becomes all the more important. In the same way inbreeding will magnify and increase traits we do not even know the original parent had, such as deformities and defects. It can be used to eleminate these defects as the line breeding (inbreeding) progresses but does require a lot of destroying deformed or very sick individuals. Inbreeding is not something to choose to do because you simply do not have an unrelated pair for example. but say you have a champion hen or Rooster and you want to preserve those genes in an entire flock of birds. you can in effect with line breeding (Father to daughter, then granddaughter, then great grandaughter) actually create an entire flock of birds that are for all practicality clones of the original Rooster. Daughters are half the Rooster Genetically, granddaughters are 3/4, great granddaughters are 7/8 and the next generation are 15/16ths the genetic make up of the Rooster and are considered for breeding purposes genetically the same bird. Hope that does not make anyone dizzy.

I wanted to post this here before offering it anywhere else.

I have a 2 month old Silver Sebright Bantam Cockerel. Free to a good home. I plan to take him to the swap this weekend if no one here claims him.

When my first Serama chick hatched it was an only chick. We had to go buy a couple of Bantam chicks from Greens Feed as companions. One of those chicks turned out to be a Male Silver Sebright Bantam. He is now about twice the size of the Serama hen and has gotten to mean to her in the past week to keep them together. Basically he has served his purpose for me and now needs a new job.

Seabrights are known for being on the wilder side for chickens. He is not to bad but not nearly as gentle as the Seramas are. He would make a good choice if you need a bird that will protect the flock, he just needs some time to grow into the task. He is getting there very quickly though. He is already trying to feed the girls and calls them when he finds food so he is showing signs that he will be a good Roo.

Sunny, I just spoke with Jan Jacobson (from the swap) and she told me to just come on out with any birds I wanted to sell or swap. No registration needed. I will risk saying for her that it applies to you as well. I am working on being able to be their for the whole 4 hours. I think I can do it if I promise to work hard the day before

Bloomie, have a blast w/ that grandbaby! We took our daughter and grandaughter with us on our trip. Here's a pic of the little one at Arches (she wanted a nap and decided this was a great place for one).
