Nevadans?

Eglyntine - What I liked best about Welp is that the price at $1.56 includes shipping. For me it was a win win, I checked the pricing all over and with Shipping to Nevada it was the best price around and no extra charges for small box. I need to figure out how to put the photos on here. My meaty order from last week compared to this weeks chicks and how much they have grown. Its simply amazing to me.

NevadaRon - sorry to hear your recovery has been tough but glad that you are feeling good enough to get online - I was wondering about you!

Great news! I now have 2 hens laying! Cabo & Sassy both gave us an egg today! I think Verde will be within the week and the other 3 in about a month.

Going to my friend's house to have a glass of wine.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

ENGLISH BULL TERRIER?!?!?!?!

Your Terrier is awesome! My Dad's and Brother's dog is quite similar, he's mostly all white with just a bit of brindle on the tips of his ears. I know how easy it can be to become engrossed in our special pets. I am the same way with my English Mastiffs. I was really interested in seeing that your EBT gets along with your chickens. My Dad has a love for chickens like no other person I have ever met but since they got Gerry he figured that his chance to have chickens was pretty much over since terriers have a tendency to be bird dogs. I will show him the pictures of Elvis as proof that he can still have chickens.

My girls are amazing with our chickens as well. I was really surprised that from the very beginning they have been super gentle with the chickens. Phoenix gets a little rambunctious from time to time when the chickens start flying around, she gets the overwhelming urge to chase them when they get flighty but other than that they are really gentle. Mystique is always so calm around them and she is really good at herding the chickens around when I let them out to free range in the yard. She makes sure they do not get too spread out and she will even hold them down so I can pick them up once it is time to go back into the pen. I did not even have to train her to do it either. It is quite funny too, the chickens will not run from the dogs, they are actually really affectionate with the dogs so when it is time to round them up Mystique just walks over to them and gently puts one paw on their back to hold them down until I can pick them up. I should video tape it sometime.

Chicken UPDATE:

My baby Orps and SLW came in Wednesday. Ideal threw in about 6 RIR roosters to keep everyone nice and warm for the trip so overall I got 21 chicks. I took a few pictures to share. They are so tiny. I do not remember the first batch I got being so little. Anyway here they are in all of their glory.

Well the roosters for the specific breeds I will keep to breed new stock so that I do not have to order anymore going forward and hopefully I can sell a few chicks next year. Everyone loves dual purpose birds and especially pretty ones. For the RIR's, DH had planned on packing the freezer with them but I think I am going to save out at least one of the roosters for my BR hens and try my hand at breeding Black Stars this spring.

They are such pretty and affectionate chickens, I really have grown to love them over the last couple of months.

If anyone needs any RIR roosters let me know and I would be happy to help you out.

So did anyone else have 2 inch thick ice in their waterers this morning? HOLY FRENCH TOAST! I cannot believe it got that cold last night. Thank God my coop is almost finished.

Chick update: Out of the 21 baby chicks I just got one died last night. Of course it had to be an BO instead of one of the RIR roosters that I did not order. I do not know why losing these chicks upset me so much but I feel devastated every time it happens. I spend days trying to figure out what I did wrong, what I could have done, etc. But it is cycle of life I guess. It just blows chicken manure.

Yes, my waterer was frozen, too. I need a solution to keep it from freezing - preferably solar, as the coop is too far away from grid power! Anyone have any ideas?

Well hopefully *fingers crossed* I will have the girls inside their coop by tomorrow. We have to finish up the doors on the brooder and get the lights & heat lamps installed for the brooder and then I will have the waterer and feed inside the coop. That should bring my feed bill down quite a bit as I will no longer be feeding the entire population of quail and doves in the Sun Valley, NV area. AND hopefully that will take care of the waterer freezing as it will be inside the coop which should be pretty warm once you get the hay and birds roaming around in there.

We went out yesterday and got a heavy duty 100 ft. extension cord to feed out to the chicken coop for the lights. Maybe you could get something like that to run out to your coop for electricity?
