Following the thread for boosting feed for the cold..I just read an article in that poultry magazine on winter feeding for internal heat...Along with the corn ,it suggested especially black sunflower seeds (and/or other bird seed) coated with olive or vegetable oil infused with garlic..Just out of curiousity I mixed up some oil/garlic and last night fed it to them in their treat bowl..they scarfed it (usually anything with onions in it, they ignore) I only fed maybe a cup of seeds with 3 tablespoons oil, so that's not bad for major immune/warmth booster. I went ahead and bought a 50 lb bag of seeds for 20$...beats the heck out of 10$ for 10 lbs.
I put together my cookie tin water heater yesterday and put my big 5 gallon waterer on it last night . It was warm this morning!!!! I am strutting around like a banty rooster...
The cookie tin heater is super easy to put together and I don't think I need a thermostat here as it just stays cold when we get into the thick of winter..if you anchor your waterer and I put mine on a slender cinder block, and if you're mindful of any water from other sources, it should be as safe as the manufactured heater shown in this thread.
