Nevadans?

Nikki - hope you feel better soon - busted ribs + pneumonia = lots of pain! Hope you are on some antibiotics and pain reducers.

Aubrey - don't you just love the blues! I just love my hens I got from Genny.

Thanks for all the safe travel wishes - I wish them back for anyone who has to drive!

I was able to catch Meringue a couple of times today - she is starting to squat! I took a good look at her (Orp/EE cross) face. She has beard & muff (pretty full) but she appears to have a single comb and not a pea comb and has these adorable little wattles buried in her beard! My other two Orp/EE crosses have pea combs with beards/muffs and no wattles! Genny said that these two are from a different hen than Meringue's mom. Genetics is really amazing!

Got two more eggs today!

Sunny, cause I know you love pics - here's one:

Left to right: my dd Olivia (age 11), my dd Taylor (age 13), my granddtr Jaylee (age 5) (her mom is my oldest dd Courtney age 27 who is lives in Sacramento - Jaylee is visiting for this week)

Today 5:40 pm hmmm I am trying to see the similarity between you and your avatar...no just can't see it. You must need a new avatar

nicest thing i've heard in a long time! Thank you!

Is anyone putting some type of heat, ie light bulb, in their coops for these single digit temps the next few days?

Last year I did - but this year I am not going to. Last year I just had one coop, and this year it is 4. So far, was -6 this AM and everyone is out and about. I did give them warm soup for breakfast and warm water in their water bowls.

I love the 'stash photo

The only heat in the coop is in the brooder where the babies are, besides that no heat. As long as there is not a draft blowing directly on them they should be fine. It was 10 outside when I went to bed but inside the coop with the chickens (no insulation, no artificial heat) it was pretty toasty. Comparatively. I did not want to go back outside after being in the coop with no wind that is for sure. *LOL*

On the subject of eggs....

This morning ( MUCH TO MY SURPRISE ) I recieved a perfect, tiny little blue egg.

how exciting! The only two out of my five that aren't laying yet is my e.e. Darla (early may hatchling) and midge (July 7 hatchling) so I am guessing it's darlas egg. But don't hatchery stock Easter eggers lay green eggs? Also, this egg was such a light blue it was almost a pristine white, will the blu pigment get darker as she lays a few more eggs?

Ahh I'm do excited!! I was really hoping for green but blue is a nice surprise too!

With the ones I had they started out almost white, then light blue, then when they got into full swing I would get a range of pink to dark blue with variations of green. It was like a different colour every day all from the same chicken. So I would not be too disappointed, it is possible for you to still get green. But I am sure some of the other ppl with tons of xp with EE's can probably give you a better explanation and what to look for.

Congratulations on the new egg layer though!

On a side note, are the dishes I dropped off last night going to help you with your dinner?
