Ron I have no experience with egg bound hens. Genny may know the symptoms.

The first symptom I noticed was she was just sitting under the ramp that comes out of their coop. She barely looked up and her eye looked kind of dimmed. She was normally one of the skittish ones, but made no move to flee even when touched. That's what is strange about it - she was fine Sat. and yesterday she was nearly dead (I didn't see her Sunday 'cause I was laid up with back spasms).

Well that can pretty much mean any sickness, but thats how egg bound hens seem to act. they just sit there and dont care if they are touched. did you notice if her eyes were closed or not? thats how my first one was. did you notice any white liquid dripping from her vent? or like a white piece of something sticking out of her vent?

I have not had an egg bound hen, but do know for a day or so they walk around with a droopy tail, very sad looking.

I DID almost loose my pet bantam Roo Woodstock (he is a RIR and two years old next month). When we had that nasty day almost 2 weeks - wind, snow, sleet yuck stuff, think it was a Thursday - he must have gotten chilled that day. It was so nasty here, I did not spend alot of time outside with the birds. When I went to lock up, he was in a nest box, not his normal roost area. I should have picked him up then - ANY change in behavior can be the first sign of a problem. BUT I did not. The next morning when I went out, he was on the floor of the coop looking very, very poorly. Wings drooped, head hanging - his duck buddy (peepers) was keeping all the birds away from him. Scooped him up and he was FREEZING - his skin so cold. In to the house he came (DH did not even bat an eye when I said Woodstock was in a box in the downstairs shower). Woodstock stayed in for two days, getting warm and his strength back. He never, ever jumped out of his box - shoe box sized - and on the second day when he started crowing I knew he was going to be ok. He is back out with the flock now with no problems.

Here is the Peepers and his rooster Woodstock

Have not shared these pictures before. The kind of tell a story

The hen is a bantam cross - her dad is Woodstock and her mother was Silverchick (she was killed about this time last year by the ravens - a Rosecomb bantam). She has since weaned the chicks ( LF chicks) and just started to go broody again last night.

Look at the very right edge of this photo and you can see Dora, one of my MF cochins, just coming into the frame.

What a great Mom she is!!! The chickies are doing very well. They are starting to really eat big time and are flying in little circles all over their brooder. I had to put them in a much bigger area so they would have room to fly around. They love it so much. I don't have the heart to tell them that when they get big they will be too heavy to fly around so effortlessly.

So glad to hear that Woodstock is back to his old self again!
