Nevadans?

I got her at Greens Feed here in Reno. I got all my babies there. I did not realize how many different breeds of chickens there are!!!! It's amazing. Such beautiful birds:)

Hi All!

DH and I went on the Las Vegas CLUCK urban coop tour last weekend. We hit 6 of the 9 or so coops offered, bypassing the ones we saw last year. Lots of coops gone green with recycled building materials. DH remarked how interesting it was that chicken coops and raised bed gardening seemed so prevalent. Funny that as we're intending to do some raised beds ourselves, coop or not. It did make me think, though, that a small portable 3x5 two-level coop for a couple of pet hens (if allowed...still working on the petition) would fit so nicely into 4x6 veggie beds.

You're in good company as you'll find LOTS of horse folks on this site.
When you say one of your original orps was "lost somewhat mysteriously" from your coop, I have images of David Copperfield. Did she just disappear or is it that her cause of demise is unknown?

Wolftracks
Owweee! Sorry to hear of your mishap. I do a lot of deposition work and an awful lot of it is fender-bender stuff. Which insurance company? Some are definitely better than others as far as taking care of business. By all means, get checked out. That soft tissue damage is onerous and insidious and often doesn't show up until way after the adrenaline has worn off. Unfortunately, as you probably already know, dealing with any kind of auto accident is a real pain in the *rear bumper*

So sorry to hear about the job situation. Education in NV has taken a real dive lately....it's one of the major topics down here in Las Vegas as the CCSD Admin is just inept...and Sandoval's budget tooling doesn't help any. Hooray that you at least have a bronze parachute pension to help out. Just how big are a Serama's eggs? I mean, are we talking like a jelly bean? If you're looking for lay hens, try a sex-link. They're around 5.5 lbs. grown and lay large eggs very consistently....so more bang for your buck/chicken weight. (You math nerds out there are probably doing weight/feed conversion/egg production number crunches right now...)

Hard for me to tell what the sexes are....saddle feathers not yet out and leg thickness hard to tell with those cutie booties. Buffy seems to have a roo stance and more of a comb, though. Just MHO and no real science to it.

Unfortunately, my boys found her flat on the coop floor, with no signs of trauma. I was away at a horse show and not brave enough to examine her before we buried her. The suggestions I received regarding her demise were egg bound (I looked at her fluffy butt and didn't notice anything different) or failed perching attempt. I prefer to think the latter so I don't have as much guilt! She was one son's favorite even though I think she wasn't as friendly as some of the others. Now he wants a duck and dad says no ducks, but we can replace the lost ones. I feel an episode of chicken math coming on, such as it takes 5 to replace 2. Can't just raise 2 babies by themselves! They need lots of friends just the same age!

That is a hard one to tell without having seen her behavior beforehand, i.e., you don't know if she was feeling poorly or if it was sudden.
You're right.... Babies need a flock of their peers! (And thus the chicken math expounds...)

IMHO, though, there is nothing more sadly flat than a dead chick.

Woooo wee finally caught up. Happy April everyone. Have chicks hatching in the closet as the snow falls outside – where is spring???? Did anyone tell her that the stage is now hers?

We added an Anatolian Shepherd to our flock of dogs. I cannot stop gushing about how good she is with the chickens (she is 5.5 yrs old and never saw a bird before). She does not TOUCH the chicken feed - while our Corso and Border Collie eat it like it is candy. Chickens are even starting to adjust to her.

Adorable chicks everyone

NV thread. I am right close to you – Red Rock area. I will have some pure blue orps sometime next month. I think I just sent you an email.

I was just in at Greens and they had some. One was still available. Ask for Cyndi, she will special order you some ducklings if they are still available at the hatchery, adding them to her chick order. Tell her Genny said you could order anything but muscovies.

NV thread. Some of my older girls are from Greens - and of course my flock of Bantam Silver Laced Cochins

wolftracks - Sorry to hear about your accident.

Penturner – I am sorry you are looking to get rid of your birds. I have to say, the eggs must be super tiny – my bantam cochins lay little eggs (adorable hard boiled and make killer deviled eggs) so your birds must be bitty. The work thing is hard.

Kim I would listen to Peeps and get yourself checked out by a doctor. Not your General practitioner either, go to a specialist in trauma injuries. Hope you feel better soon!

Danee I think that rumor of spring was just started to give us false hope, then to laugh at those of us that were silly enough to believe it, that we started hatching chicks and planting seeds(my upstairs bedroom has them all for now).

BTW, CUTE babies! I used to have buff brahmas. I loved their fluffy feet!

Fallen Leaf so sorry to hear of your poor chickie! I've lost a few over the years and it always stinks!

You are right Peep! I did the weight/feed conversion/egg production number (+coop and equipment costs) crunches on all my birds before I got them and you know what? I'll never make any money on any of them!

However as good as the eggs are, compared to store bought, I hope I never have to go back to life without them.

Daniel, good to hear from you again! DH and I are kinda thinking along the same lines. Well, sorta. We are thinking seriously about retiring in Ecuador (safe, cheap, friendly people and dynamite weather). We could retire early and still live well there on a small budget. Plus they are very chicken friendly!!! People let their chickens run all over the place down there! Except in the big cities, of course and even in the larger cities you can hear roosters in the morning! Not being allowed to grow your own food is a concept they would never understand (course I don't understand it either).

Wish I had room for Seramas but my girls would think they were just a tasty treat.

Hi Genny! Can't wait to see your new shepherd! Hearing that you have more blue orps hatching makes me want to get more! I love the girls I have of yours, they are really mellow and friendly birds (not to mention beautiful).

Serama Eggs are not all that small. maybe 2 of them to make up one of the normal ones. but the hens only lay one every two days at best. Not the most productive layers at what amounts to two or three eggs a week. We are watching for a poultry swap or something to pop up.

I have my garden in full start mode. But then I have had plants outdoors for the past 3 or 4 weeks. yes even in the snow, and they are still alive. I like a challenge.

Oh poo! Now it's snowing here too! Itls been snowing all day to our north and I was hoping it would not start here but...

We're having wild winds here in Henderson. 30 mph sustained with our biggest gust at 57 mph.
Took the dogs to the dog park and came home gritty due to all the stuff blowing around.
I filled my small fountain because all the water blew out of it.
Sister Bertrille would be in NM about now.....
