Those showgirls were so cute!

Take a look at the post I made on this page - #1326. One of the guys on that thread lost some chickens to predators and I was explaingin how my run is built. (=Fort Knox!)

We have an air rifle and I am very disappointed in it. I told Gary it does not work worth doo-doo but he said it was supposed to be good. Yesterday I trapped a ground squirrel - he brought out the air rifle and it took 3 shots before the poor squirrel was dead.


A 22 rifle - makes a small sound. If the coons are trapped, you will be firing downward and there is little chance the bullet will go astray. But I am always glad to finish them off for you or anyone. (drowning to me seems terrible, I would rather someone shot me - but many, many people trap coons and then throw the trap into a garbage can full of water, wait half an hour to hour and then bury the coon - course you can eat them also, not that I have yet, but have heard they are greasy.)


It would not surprise me that there are more of them. Your poor girls

Let me know if I can do anything - if you would like that Orp early - that would work for me too

When I was in CA and had a predator problem, I called Fish & Game and they brought out and provided the traps for free. They came back in two weeks to pick up the traps...and certainly didn't want to know what happened to the contents therein (although by the smell I'm pretty sure they figured out we were trapping skunks). I've also had them take away trapped coons.

IF you want to dispatch of the coons yourself, check out your local taxidermists who might be willing to take the carcasses from you.

Thanks guys. Ron, thanks for the demo. I have decided that I will just use the big girl coop for everyone. It's sturdy, secure, heavy, and I trust it. I bought hardware cloth for the vents, latches for the roof (which I can barely lift anyways as it is over 100lbs), and more latches for the door, one of them being a master lock with a key. I'll admit, the showgirl coop was sort of wimpy, but this one is absolutely coon-proof.

The backyard looks so empty

I don't think Petey is gonna make it. He is in a lot of pain. His shoulder is very swollen and full of liquid. He fades in and out of consciousness. I have him in a crate with a bowl of tetracyclin, which he is not drinking. He also seems to have lost an eye.

I came on this morning cause I had decided that we need to have a get together before the good weather leaves us and find out that folks are already planning one and then I see your post! OMG that is so so so so terrible! Poor Petey! And all those adorable little showgirls...

Yeah, I'm really excited to have a get together. I'd love a BYC BBQ!

Mark and I also decided that were gonna put in a doggy door that we can lock during the day so Elvis can't get to the chickens, and then unlock at night so he can run outside whenever he sees a stupid rotten chicken killing coon and kill it.

Go out and look, I know you have - but look in places you would never think a chicken could fit or hide. Search thru any bushes - part the branches to look. Under buckets, under wood - flashlight under deck.

the other is out there hiding and fine.
