Nevadans?

Got any tips on making my goats people friendly? They take off as soon as anyone walks out the door

Your picture reminds me of when my wife is hand feeding her parrot babies, the cats and my English Pointer bird dog all line up for a taste out of the syringe!

well, i know I should be grateful for rain when living in the high desert and normally, I am, but today it really put a damper on my coop build progress.

My kids were all excited and had to put on their rain boots and coats and were singing and splashing around. Meanwhile I'm frantically trying to cover up the plywood with plastic. Anyhoo...I should be able to get back to it soon for a little bit until it gets dark.

laceynoelle, sorry you had such a miserable balloon races. I'm sure you'll be more careful where you sit next time!

I would not suggest luring them with food. When and if they get friendlier it will only be to demand something to eat. as for what to do. Go spend time just setting where they can come to you. That is my basic go to for any animals. approaching them is threatening give them the opportunity to get used to you gradually. I have a cat that was nearly ferrel when we got him. It took well over a year to get him used to even being touched. Now he is a huge wimpy sap that wants to set in my lap all the time. Sometimes it takes a long time. Also looking directly at an animal is a sign of aggression and stalking. bending over or squatting down is also a message to them you are ready to strike at them. Think of how a mountain lion would act as it hunts. and don't act anything like that even by mistake. Just be casual don't move suddenly around them and don't really pay attention to them. that is all basic info on how to approach any animal that you do not want to be afraid of you.

Just curious if any bycer's also have some sheep. I am interested in expanding the backyard farm but would like a sheep mentor. I have bout 2 acres of lush pasture available. I had some friends horses out here last year. They fatted up nicely. Anyone?

Thanks

Dirtgirl

Max, thats exactly like my place!! Buck licks everyones faces clean after feeding.
Aubrey, just dont push it, thats all I can say. Mama goat, Creme, and Coco were all skittish when we got them, and that was in the spring. Now theyre really loveable. All I do if feed them, water them, mend the fence, clean it, and pet them when they come over. The other three were friendly because they were bottle babies.
Daniel, Im not hating on you here, and I know everyone says animals dont like you looking at their eyes, but Ive never had an animal get upset when I look them in the eyes, which I always do. I couldnt stop if I tried honestly, Its just so odd to not to. I grew up looking my dog in the eyes, she was my friend, I didnt know some people say not too. Goats, dogs, cats, horses, seriously, no problem. I just dont think the animals care all that much. Although I am a predator that will eat any animal on the property, ('cept dogs) Im a smarty. I bring them food. Theyre trained to adore me.

Elizabeth! In my defense, it was dark. ^^ But yes ever after dark adventure will now come with a flashlight and lots and lots of Raid.
Dirtgirl, Ive never had sheep but its in my blood!! My Great grandfather made a living ranching Cashmere sheep. Or maybe Angora. I dont remember the story right now, but it was some hair kind. Someday, I will have sheep agian. Thats me, bringin' back tradition.

But until then, Storey's guide to whatever are like the best books out there, the North Valleys library has got some really good books on sheep raised. Im sure its pretty much like goats, except the shearing.

I can see myself with a name like that! I do come from VERY blue collar stock! I also loved Ellie-May Clampett when I was a kid. OMG maybe that's where the facination with critters comes from!!!

5!!!

Ron did I hear you say you were in your 50s at the picnic? I must have heard wrong cause you look like a kid still! Ok like my kid brother anyway (who is 12 years younger than I).

I missed the 6,000th post! I went out to dinner with my family - my nephew was up here from 29 Palms on his pre-deployment leave and it was his last night, so we all went out to dinner. He's heading to Afghanistan (2nd tour!) in a week or so.

Yes Sunny, I turned 50 this year. It's very kind of you to say I look like a kid still - must be the way I dress.

Congrats on the 6,000th post!

I like the start you've made on your coop, Elizabeth!

Did you sleep in your boots, too, Tyler?

Hey Penturner I don't know what you think about Dayton but there are lots of inexpensive places with acreage here, especially if you are willing to put some elbow grease into fixing one up. Just down the road from me one recently sold for $69,000 - 2.5 acres with a manufactured home on a foundation! Even the one's in excellent shape are well under $200K.

I didn't sleep, I was helping set up for my Rabbit clubs show and I woke up early friday. It was a really nice sun rise that yesterday morning.

Awwww man! I'm going to Red Bluff that day to pick up my order of FBCMs! Shoot! I really want to go!
rant.gif

Who are you getting them from? I know a breeder of the FBCM's in Red Bluff. If it's the same one, she hatched the Polish I got for her friend who breeds them but I picked them up in Red Bluff....very nice lady if it's the same one.

Yep! I only know of one FBCM breeder in Red Bluff and that is Debi of Heaven Sent Farms. Yes she has been very nice! I am looking forward to meeting her in person but since she is a BYCer and we are on a couple of the same threads I feel like I know her already. I have more chicks coming in spring as well and another dozen eggs that I'll be picking up soon from a fellow that specializes in egg color specifically! He doesn't concentrate on SQ just on egg color and he runs several shows for egg color getting entries from all over the country! Including Bev Davis' eggs (whom he says always sends some gorgeous, very dark eggs).I'm so excited!!!

I understand Aubrey! I think the house is a lot cuter than you think but I would probably feel the same way if it were mine.

Thank you Elizabeth! With this latest referral I should be set!

I can relate to the rain holdup. Yesterday I pulled the mail box down, scrubbed it, banged out most of the dents and spent forever yesterday and today scrapping off the old name & numbers and all of this was on a tight time line because the box needs to be back up by tomorrow for the mail delivery and just as I'm getting all set up to paint it... yep, it starts to rain. Love the smell of the first rains but the timing could have been better.
roll.png
Now I guess I'll have to put it back up unpainted and unnumbered. I will tape a temporary address label on it though.

Ron I wondered where you'd gone off to! We wish your Nephew has a safe tour this time. Our Son-in-law and one of Steve's nephews did 2 tour each. Boy was it tough seeing them go for a second tour!!! IDK why it was so much harder the second time!

Lacey you had me laughing out loud with that ant story! But, no, I didn't pee my pants.

Love the goat pics! That is so cute with the dog drinking up all the spills!

Ok, now you have to find out what type of sheep your grandfather had cause I'm curious! Angora actually comes from rabbits but there is an angora goat which is where mohair comes from and cashmere comes from goats as well. But I won't buy cashmere anymore because of the devastation the goats have brought to the Gobi desert region, expanding the desert by leaps and bounds. Then of course there are the alpaca and vicuna wools...

Oops, I'm rambling again. Sorry.

Tyler! At first I was like OMG he was up for 36 hours straight?!! Then I remembered how many times I used to do the same thing when I was young. Can't do it anymore!!! I'm too old! Old I tell ya! Old as dirt!
old.gif

No offense intended Dirtgirl.

Ok, I must be really tired!!! I always think the dumbest things are hilarious when I'm tired.

MuckMuck, I'd love a pic of that!
