Are you referring to the angles of the notches where they go over the top of the wall? In construction you call those "bird's mouths" and I'll let you in on a little secret: They don't have to be perfect! We would take a 2x4, lay it flat on the top plate (i.e., top of your wall) next to the rafter, then draw a line across it. Then place the 2x4 against the outside edge of your wall and draw a vertical line. There's your cut! Like I said, it won't be perfect but trust me no one but you will ever notice! And if it bothers you, you can always Spackle the small gap before painting.

You'll have to move of course!

You need lots more room for those geese that are coming, then maybe a little goat, then...

I've been doing a ton of research on cattle lately and, even though we had one when I was a kid, I am learning a ton of new stuff! Mainly I've already figured out that I'll probably want more than one and once I get more than 2 then I'll need to look for a bigger plot of land cause cattle do better if they have a large area to graze on and the land does better if you rotate them a lot. So.... I'm guessin' we'll be moving again soon?

Elizabeth, Ron's right, those are easy. A lot of shed designs don't bother with them though. Now if you are talking about where the rafters join at the top of a peaked roof then that can be very easy as well provided you have a miter saw. They amount of pitch you need is not much on a building that size. The walls will protect the roof from snow load and just a half inch rise per foot will be enough for rain to run off. Most folks do more though cause it looks nice plus the higher ceiling will give you room for a small platform where you can store stuff. Just pick an angle, set the saw and lock it in place. Cut all your boards at once (I would do this before the birds mouth notches). If you don't have a miter saw then you can buy a miter box kit at most hardware stores or rent one. I'm lazy I would rent a miter saw.

Here's a site on building roof trusses. There are lots of places on line that give free advice.

Wow Elizabeth, you are really doing great and I see in your pics that it looks like Jose did all the work. I think you should have the pics of all of your injuries to prove who did the work and who watched.

No everyone, my DH isn't getting caught up in it, he's making sure I don't go overboard on the amount of birds we have. I do need more land and I want to be in Verdi more so than the Red Rock area. I feel more at ease there for some reason, perhaps it's because all my friends from work live all around there? I'm thinking anywhere from 15 to 20 acres would do just fine for the birds I want. I'm not sure about the cattle though.

Verdi is great! Plus it would be close to your work. Having friends close is important. We know quite a few folks up here so Red Rock fit us. Well at least til we retire and move to South America.

Tyler thanks for the info. If I go I'll give you a heads up but it won't be for awhile.

thanks for the advice, Ron and Sunny and Sheryl! I cut the angle on a scrap wood and used that to draw the angle and then cut the rafters with my circular saw. I wish i had a compound miter saw but it worked fine. good enough for chickens, as they say! they came out good. it's not a very steep pitch. I will have to get some photos of me working. I am the family photographer so I don't have many photos of me. My parents are here so I will recruit them to take some photos.

I actually bought some extra materials so I can make the kids a playhouse too! That will come after the coop and run are done, though. It will be their big christmas/birthday gift (january birthday). they kids have set up house temporarily in the coop! they brought their play food and pots and pans in there yesterday and were having a great time! so cute! the playhouse is a surprise for them and I know they will love it.

well there is nary a peep from the brooder. they are all sleeping. oh, wait, just heard a peep. most are sleeping!

We have another busy saturday with soren's soccer game, then my parents are taking us out to eat and then my mom and I are going shopping. soccer photos are before the game. Am I a bad mom if I don't want to pay $40 or more to get the official photos? I already took a team photo a few weeks ago. what a racket. and the photos are scheduled 10 minutes before the game starts. decisions...decisions...
have a good night all!
Elizabeth
