Nevadans?

NV thread. Your best bet is to glean some ideas from the coop section right here on BYC. Do remember that you are in the desert and will need lots of ventilation and shade is your friend.

Hello fellow Nevadans, long time. Does anybody need any roosters before I cull the spring crop with my meaties and turkeys? The usual suspects; BCM, blue/wheaten Am's, Welsummer, etc.

Have a great week/Nevada Day observance.

edit for the hand being quicker than the eye, Welsummer has a 'u' in it.

Hi Brandi!!! Welcome to the Nevada thread. Great to see some more folks here from Southern Nevada. We have some awesome folks on here from that area.

Boy have you come to the right place! BYC is a wonderful resource for new chicken owners. Have a specific question in mind? If not my only advice is to just relax and enjoy. Chickens are a blast!

Luckily I'm a big planner so we have our coop design already drawn up next to a wall under a tree.

We plan on doing a coop with a run attached, but also allow free ranging with our supervision. We're thinking about getting around 10 bantams, but not too sure how much sq footage we'd need. The entire enclosure will be 48 sq ft and around 5 ft high. The coop itself will be around 20 sq feet, elevated off the ground of course. We are super excited to start raising chickens! Our 4 yr old is just as excited, maybe even more.

Thanks ke_ben! Yes we are loving it!!! Course we haven't had to deal with a winter up her yet.

I kinda feel like I'm back in Arizona. Having to deal with scorpions and rattlers again. We have a pretty laid back species of rattler up here though. Not as deadly as the sidewinders or the mojave rattlers we had there. Do you folks in S. NV get those varieties?

BTW Brandi, ke_ben is an excellent resource for any questions related to raising chickens. I keep telling him he should write a book.

Oh and I added you to the opening post. You're branded as one of us now!

I've never raised chickens myself, but I helped tend a large flock when I was 11 or so for a couple years. My husband knew I wanted a flock of my own, but I'm surprised he's this excited about it and brought the idea up himself. This will be his first experience with "farm animal" raising. Mostly it will be done by me since I stay at home, but I know he'll be out there in no time with chickens in his lap.

welcome! the coop section of byc is a real gold mine. I also used building chicken coops for dummies as a guide. I am finishing up our coop. Have 25 chicks waiting to get in there. They are 6 weeks old. Definitely get that coop started before you get the chicks! We did start ahead of time but chicks grow so fast. Oh, and I have 4 year old twins. they love the chicks.

penturner, congrats on 27 years! that's a great accomplishment.

tyler, good luck to your rabbit going to the show!

sheryl , how exciting you get to see your new grandbaby! and another one on the way already! they will be pretty busy. you'll have to post a photo when you get back. thanks for the tips on the green tomatoes. I picked some this morning and will get the rest when I get home. i told the kids to pick the rest of the raspberries.

Jose and I do our fair share of fighting so I guess there's hope for us! We are both pretty opinionated and always think we're right, of course! Marriage is quite the journey but it's been worth it. Jose and I met in a disco in Mexico.

well, i just took a look at the crossfit workout on tap for me this afternoon. it's a doozy today. I remember it from last month. I'm drinking my water in preparation.

Sunny, I do not think 18 is too young to marry either, the qualms we have about it are that he went from playing video games and drinking with his buddies to marrying a grown woman with a career and three already older children. While we found it honorable he never got a chance to be a young man and have fun and all she ever does is complain about how he doesn't take his responsibilities seriously. He's still in his early twenties! I know it was his descision but I do feel badly for him. Not to mention she's a total witch. She is by far the meanest person I know, but is also the most gorgeous person I know. She hates and judges everyone in out family and has disowned her own. All she has is my brother and she treats him like garbage. Makes me feel so bad.

& the NV thread! I love when we get new people and when others come back too!

Oh Sunny, you really kill me with your life!

I met John when I was 16 & he was 18. We got married 2 years later and last April it was 31 years. Fight all of the time, boy you know it, we don't keep anything back. If we don't like something we change it when the other person isn't there. Then when we find out we usually just say it's not worth the trouble. If it does get changed then we say, oh I guess they really mean it so I better not change it. But if we really meant it then we change it back again until someone says, hey - knock it off okay. Then it starts and then it's over and we compromise and do it together. Strange how love works though.

I always say well we did grow up together. Oh and we met on the CB radio, yes, we actually had CB's back in those days!

I know Elizabeth, I just love kids. I've always wanted a house full but for some reason I didn't want it to be me having tons of kids just the grand kids, what's up with that?

I'll be posting pics when I can though.

Actually I said I do think 18 is too young! Way, way too young! I stated that my parents are the exception. I think it rarely works! When I was 18 I knew NOTHING about what it takes to make a marriage work. In fact I didn't even know myself yet. I was smart enough at that age to know it wasn't a good idea (thank goodness) though. I was engaged to a great guy at the time but realized that I was in no way ready for such a huge step! If I hadn't walked away from that I never would have become my own person. It's so important to wait until you have a chance to grow in to who you are going to be. lol Sometimes I think that process is never going to end but you know what I mean. I just think it's important to learn to enjoy "you" before settling into a lifelong commitment.

I'm so sorry your brother is in a terrible relationship. One of my brothers is too and it breaks my heart, even though we have talked about it, and he knows how bad it is, he has to be the one to get to a place where he can enjoy life again. I can't do that for him.
sad.png
I think he's just kind of paralyzed at the moment. He is one of those young souls that finds life very overwhelming so just does whatever someone pushes him to do (and she pushed him very hard to do this). He will learn or he won't. I do wish I could make things better for him but he has to do that for himself.
