lol yeah, the world just crashed down here. Aubrey Im sure she is really super nice, and I dont care if she worships banana slugs as a religion. Society as a whole is just really ignotant. Haha, look at me, I didnt know Satanists actually existed until you said somthing. I thought they were just somthing people got nervous about and gossiped about, like the Communists during the red scare. Hmm. I doubt Im explaining this right. oh well.
Point being, everyone will still sit with you at the diner table.
Okay, this dream of me having one of my hens going broody and then I get her a baby chick may actually happen. One of my SLW's has gone broody, today is the first day she on the nest and she was ticked when I took her egg away. I left her the fake eggs and she's happy right now. So perhaps after she's on the nest for a couple of days I can actually place a baby chick under her at night and if she accepts it then I can move them both into the brooder? Can this actually work because I've never done this before. Please help me everyone who's done this thing before.
Its super easy.
Just at night when everyone's settled down, put a chick (or two..or twenty
) under her. It should probably be a newer chick because theolder they are, the less they listen in my experience. I think they get used to being independent. You might want to block the other girls out for the night just in case, and wait a couple days so she's more accustom to the idea of babies. I dont know if they'll take a baby on day two. After this storm will probably be a good time, just so everyone else can safely sleep outside, and shes good with the idea, and you can track down a new baby. Its always so fun, so prepare yourself. And remember the pictures, those are a must..didnt know if you knew. All part of the process.
Thanks Lacey, for some reason I had a feeling she was going broody. Last week she started jumping in my lap and wanted to have lots of pets which told me something was going on. When I got home from work today, she was in the nest and she growled at me. She never did that before so I left her alone and came in the house saying I think we have a broody right now but we shall see. When I went out there again, she was still on the nest. I placed my hand underneath her and she got really ticked at me. I tap her nicely on her beak and said are you going to bite me but she didn't. When everyone went to bed she growled at each of them to leave her alone. I took the egg that she laid away but I gave her the rest of the plastic eggs and she's still on them. I was thinking of moving her after she's been on them for a few days into the brooder before I leave for Florida so this would need to be done tomorrow and if she's still on them after I move her to the brooder then I think she'll be good to go and I can try a chick before I leave for Florida but if it's not possible then when I get home and she's still on those eggs then perhaps I could do it then. I just don't know? Penturner, I still need to see your pics on your chicks and momma so it can help me decide on all of this and if it does not work, I just don't know what I can do?
hello everyone, sad about the weird cat rumors on CL. I hate to hear about any animal cruelty but who knows if this is one of those urban legends. We had an all black cat growing up. she was a sweety.
yes, lacey, mexicans celebrate Dia de los Muertos on November 2nd. they put together altars honoring dead loved ones with pictures of them, their favorite foods and flowers. in small towns, especially they will have a vigil in the cemeteries. Jose and I went to see this in a small town in his home state the year I lived down there. It was very interesting to observe. In that culture they use a lot of skeletons and skulls and stuff to kind of make fun of death to show it won't win. there is a special bread called "pan de muertos" that they make to place on the altar as nourishment for the departed soul. i guess now in mexico more are doing the american halloween stuff which makes me a little sad.
sheryl, good luck on your broody project! i hope you're able to get some chicks to put under her.
i went with on the kids' preschool field trip to the pumpkin patch this morning. it was to andelin farms in spanish springs. they had a lot of activities for the kids but the pumpkins were small sugar ones. we each got one with admission. that is fine and i love cooking pumpkin but they are too small for carving so we'll have to go get some bigger pumpkins somewhere else. my camera battery died while we were there, too, so i didn't get as many pictures as I like. so probably we will head over to ferrari farms over on mill street on friday to get those pumpkin patch photos i love and some big pumpkins. i was hoping to do all of that today but andelin is really a different sort of patch than i realized. anyhoo, it was fun. they have some chickens there. lots of them were molting so it was funny to see that.
lol thanks guys. I just get real defensive about it because its like "oh yeah, of COURSE the green haired punk rock girls best friend is a satanist" hhhaha
sheryl good luck!!! Its so easy! remember how easily mama took genny's baby chicks? i just shoved em under her. when they came out she REALLY eyeballed them. I thought for a second she was gonna peck their faces off but i think instead she was just getting to know the faces of her two new beautiful babies.
elizabeth that sounds super fun. I went to the one on mill with my girlfriends last week and we had a blast in the corn maze
I know Aubrey but this is her first time being broody. She's only 7 months old so perhaps it won't work and then I have this single baby chick. I'm really nervous right now about it. I think if I see pics of Kim's babies it might help me decide but who knows for sure. My DH says I should wait until I get back from Florida to do this. She might not be dedicated enough or what happens if she doesn't protect this little one enough and it dies? I would hate to have that happen. I would feel like I killed this little baby chick.
