Yes, and Tyler can explain the stuff that Aubrey may have questions about! I'm so excited that you decided to do this Aubrey. I have always wondered how you get started throwing your hat in the ring...or umm, your chicken!

Hi everyone:

It's been a long time since I have been on BYC. Not too much of an update to give - just have some questions...

My flock is now 5 - 1-1/2 yr hens, 1 FBCM who is about 2? (I got her from Sunny) and 3 almost 6 month old hens/pullets. My older hens went through a molt and, for the most part, are fully feathered - but are still not laying eggs! One of my pullets, BFCM was giving me an egg a day until about 5 days ago and she stopped. I have gotten 2 blue eggs from my black arucanas from Sunny - that was about 10 days ago.

How long should I expect the older 6 hens to be on strike? How about the younger ones?

Thank you!

welcome rumblon!

SparksNV, I have no knowledge to share regarding your question as I'm newer to this than you but someone else may be able to help you out.

hopefully ron and nikki will check in to the thread.

I built a larger roost for the chicks. some seem to like it and I'm sure the rest will get on board eventually.

these ones are the diehards sticking with the tiny chick roost for now. there were 8 of them crammed on there last night. I'll be curious to see what they do tonight.

OMG CAROL!!!!! We missed you! How have you been?
Ok, after molting they can take awhile to start laying again. Giving them a higher protein feed can help (growing new feathers can take it's toll) as well as adding light for a couple of hours during the early evening or during morning hours. Some folks like to wait a few weeks after a molt is finished to give them time to recover. Genny has got me converted to feeding all flock now, with more protein than layena and supplementing with oyster shell (for laying hens). If you give them light and extra protein they should be laying again in no time!

Oh no. She was sick for so long too. I hope she is ok!

Elizabeth, lol. They're all looking at you like "We'll stay here, thanks."
Carol, I'm in the same boat.
