The city told us that anything portable that was under 10x10 was just a shed and didn't need a permit. We aren't pouring a foundation for this so it is a "portable" shed.

Hey Ron! If you come across anyone selling an old flatbed trailer would you let me know? I don't care if the bed is rotted out I can cut new planks. For my next big project I want to build a BIG tractor style coop!

I'm actually serious.

Those are really cool! I'll keep my ears open!

Oh well as they say... "there's nothing new under the sun..." yada yada.

I figure out in your neck of the woods you might hear of one. I've seen a couple for sale but they were in good shape and EXPENSIVE! I am way too cheap to spend a lot on this venture.

As I said, just on the ol' hamster wheel at work....much needed as bills don't stop.

Spent a bit of time in Andover, Kansas helping kiddo settle into new digs... Yes, Kansas IS flat and, yes, weather conditions (specifically tornados) are a big thing. Did take a fabulous trip with DH touring New Mexico, north and south. Fell in love with Corrales, a very definite agricultural community (WITH WATER!!!) located just outside of ABQ. I swore I would never again live anywhere near where they filmed COPS, but this place seriously has me considering a relocation. BUT, being as how me and everyone else in NV are underwater, I'm here for a bit. You can bet, though, chickens and goats are in my future..... Husband and I both think a hobby farm would be cool.

Old dogs having to learn new tricks: I switched over software programs after 25+ years so I could stay current in work (yeah, people laugh when I say I use Windows 95, but you know what? It NEVER crashes), and between Win 7 and new protocols it has been like learning a whole new language. The learning curve is kind of slow and right when I got slammed with jobs, so I've just been glued to transcript production. The hazard of long hours sitting.... BIG(ger) butt! Now, I don't know whether it's aging or just my stubborness, but does anybody else find that easier is more complicated? I mean, it seems like things were a heckalot easier a decade or two ago. Maybe I'm overthinkin' it.

Anyway, depending on hatch rates, I should have some chickies available for the taking (that's free, folks) in 2012 for those whose brand new/rehabbed coops seem a tad empty.... Yeah, I'm a hatching fiend.....

I'm feeling like Santa Claus today....
Hey, just tell me what you want. I may be able to custom some eggs for the freebies.

I've seen pictures of things like that here on BYC. Then there was the Modern Marvels episode about chickens (I can't believe you didn't watch that!) where a guy in Santa Rosa (I think) has several of them. Also, the guy in VA with the YouTube videos about his sustainable farming techniques (VERY cool - wish I could remember what they are called
barnie.gif
) uses those when he moves the chickens from one pasture to another. He has the chickens following the cows so they eat the flys and maggots from the fresh cow poo after the cows have moved on - very interesting!

wow! you guys have been super chatty!

hope you can save up for your coop, aubrey!

I can offer my husband's muscles
sport-smiley-5557.gif
and my knowledge of having built a coop before. i am not a construction expert, though. the habitat for humanity Restore over by mill end fabrics is a place to check out. i was able to find some plexiglass that i will use for windows. they also have old hinges. not much in they way of wood, though. it was overpriced and not in good shape. materials show up on craigs list too but I always had the issue of small car for transportation so i just needed to buy at home depot and have the lumber and sheet goods delivered.

I had successful resolution of my work problem today. We had a meeting with the campus office and a bigwig showed up. They apologized for the way things were handled with our client and we worked out how to get the paperwork the way it needed to be. i am relieved and now need to get some real work done! what a waste of time and energy for my whole staff and several people on their staff. now i need a massage or something. i think my cortisol levels are way up.

I used to watch Modern Marvels when I had TV! I'll have to check it out on Hulu. You're not talking about the small tractor coops are ya? I've seen tons of those. I've just never seen a huge one that is built on a flat bed trailer. I'm kinda scared to do a search on them now. If I see a bunch of huge, glorious Taj Ma Coops, that can be hauled from city to city, then I'll go crazy when I design mine!

Yes that's my dream. To travel, cross country, with my chickens in tow.

Some of my ideas, while fantastic on paper, are just not quite as wonderful in reality. Then again.....
