Oh I was looking for an avatar last night and I was hungry. I came across this pic of a poached egg on toast and it looked sooo good to me! I'm gonna keep looking but it sure did look delicious last night! lol:
 
Nevada is real interesting when it comes to their food laws. A point comes to mind which may have a tanget to the Farmers Market scene.

There's an organic farm located in Overton, I believe, that for years has been providing food boxes to subscribers. Well, they decided to show off their wares a little more to their subscribers and others interested in healthful living and advertised a dinner out at the farm, six courses for $70 or some such. (The menu was divine!) The event sold out quickly.

Midway into the first course the Health Department showed up and ordered the event shut down and bleach poured on all the food....because the meat being served was not butchered in in a certified slaughterhouse (of which NV has none and all livestock is outsourced to CA for dispatched) and therefore was considered unsaleable. Mind you, the whole point of the meal was local grown/organic grown. Too, there was something about the kitchen not being certified beforehand, but it was the meat thing that mainly put the kabash on it.

The kicker is had they advertised selling shares in a Supper Club, the dinner would've gone on undisturbed. But since they advertised it as they were selling and serving meals, well....

In a roundabout way I'm linking this to the Farmers Markets. You're selling product, not meals. And just like buying apples at the supermarket, it's kind of a caveat emptor situation... Hopefully everyone is operating on good faith and the sellers are providing safe items. There's not a whole lot of regulation and, hopefully, most buyer folks know the proper way to wash and prepare raw foods before consuming.

Honestly, I have no idea what the county and state regs are for Farmers Markets, but I'm pretty sure somebody has some say in licensing and permits as it is biz being conducted in a physical jurisdiction. I have yet to see even a lemonade stand that doesn't get scrutiny by some govt. type. It might be that there's some sort of umbrella for permits provided by the organizers which, presumably, paying for your stall space or table. It varies from state to state.

I don't know how enterprising y'all intend to be on this, but for IRS and taxation purposes there's a threshold of dollars of goods that is allowed to slide as a hobby before you start making and having to declare profits. But when you do hit that threshold, be ready for paperwork...especially anything that's ag related because there's a whole slew of different taxation codes and rates for that. (IMHO, big benefits for lots of deductions but real PITA documentation).

Yes Nevada's business taxes are horrendous. When I had the Staging business they taxed me every time I turned around but I never had to deal with anything as horrendous as that story you just told! That would have made me ill! I can't stand to see good food wasted!

I found that it didn't do any good to claim expenses cause they tax you on every piece of equipment you buy for your business. Individually we wouldn't be making enough to put in your eye anyway. I'd be happy if I could just earn a little feed money. In fact I wouldn't care if you all wanted to do this for charity but that is one of the things we would discuss at the first meeting if this looks doable at all.

If nothing else it's a great way for some of the young folks to get an idea of how business works. If they attend the meetings as well anyway.

If I remember right we don't need a business license or a tax ID # to just sell limited quantities at the farmer's market unless, Like Dee says, we were to make a whole lot of money (which I know already isn't going to happen at a once a week sale even if we weren't pooling our resources & profits).

Still I do think it would be fun and it's a great way to get involved in our community and get our names out there. Most of us run small businesses on the side or will at least have chickens to sell at some point so this would be very helpful in that way.

Sunny, I did Eggs Benedict yesterday for breakfast and your avatar is making me want some more.

There might not be slaughterhouses around anymore but there are butchers still all over the place. Including here in Reno. Wolfpack Meat Company is one of them. They buy local meats only and butcher it and sell it to local Casino's & Restaurants, Boomtown is one of the Casino's who buy from them for our Steakhouse Cassidy's.

Also, My DH's Great Uncle is a butcher in Yerrington. He was the town's butcher before retiring. He still does some butchering off and on through out the year.
 
You won't be paying any taxes on food items being sold at any Farmer's Markets or grocery stores, taxable items are on already prepared products such as soaps, breads or anything you have already cooked.

Produce, meats & dairy you do not pay taxes on.
 
Here is just one from last year. We have been out at Mythkats house twice in two days and forgot the camera both times. I really want a before photo but will have to ask Kathy to get it if it is going to be got this year.


That there is also me. My t-shirt and blue jeans. about all you will ever see me in. I'm a little nicer than I look though. in the background you can see the top of our chicken pen. our entire back yard was full of these plants. no grass nothin we devoted it all to tobacco or tomatoes. This was pretty early in the season and eventually the tobacco got so tall you would not have been able to see the pen.

I am working on one of the normal lookign ones but it is not ready for it's close up yet.

As for the soap. I am hoping we can all be using fine soaps for the cost of cheap ones. Not looking for savings but an increase in what we get for the money spent.

I don't have a picture of the Rocket Mass Heater we are building but that is another project.

I think that is about it for today. I am tired and the brain is not firing on all cylinders. I am trying to think of a ay to protect the drip system from the rabbits out at Kathy's. She says they will chew the emitters and the 1/4 inch line to get to the water. They don't mes with the 1/2 drip line. I was thinking of slipping 1/2 inch line over the 1/4 inch line so the rabbits can't reach it. or a wire cage sort of thing or even a metal tube that will slide over it so they can't chew it. If anyone knows of something that works I would appreciate it.

Yes it used to be food in general that was sales tax free but now I'm dating myself.

BTW eggs Benedict sounds really good to me right now and I am not even a fan of Hollandaise(sp?) sauce. I use a Parmesan sauce when I make eggs Benedict. OK I better stop, I'm getting hungry again!

Here is a way I figure out if food is taxed. By the way bread is not.
You would not pay tax on macaroni, eggs, mayonnaise, and mustard. but if the store mixes all those together in a macaroni salad you do. You can buy the bun hamburger pickles lettuce and even the special sauce without tax. but step into McDonald's at Wal Mart and order it all together as a hamburger and you will. It is a finished ready to eat product that is taxed because that is considered dinner not groceries. If it fit the bill for fast food or restaurant purchase it is taxed.
 
Thank you very much, I didn't mean to say bread is taxed from the store but if you go to the deli and get a sandwich it is. I remember seeing on the news awhile back about if someone makes it for you then you are taxed. I wish now I kept the article about it.

That's a different way of making Eggs Benedict for sure.

Yeah that's a toughie. I first thought wire cages but that seems too labor intensive and costly for every emitter. If they are drip emitters then maybe used tin cans bent around the emitter but with the opening still there for the water to drip through and onto the plant roots? For this to work you would need soil berms around each plant fortified by stones to keep the rabbits from knocking them down. That will keep the water over the roots of the plant.

And you are right, you do look a little hard in that photo and you (and your whole family) are so sweet. That pic doesn't show that at all though.

It probably doesn't count as eggs benedict when it doesn't have Hollandaise but it looks almost the same.

I bet you make a great Hollandaise. It's just a little too rich for me but in small doses I can enjoy it if it's a good recipe.
