Elvis ran outside to play with the goats this morning. Saddest thing i ever did see when he looked around and realized abner wasnt coming to headbutt him he just kind of skullked off into the back of the yard to pee then wandered around a bit. poor little duffer.

Btw yesterday i got 9 eggs from my 11 layers! this is a record number, it is!

sheryl, I hadn't heard about the coop fire. How sad! I had to change out the bulb in my heat lamp yesterday. It was broken at the socket. The fire is a good reminder to check things frequently.
aubrey, glad you found a home for your goats. I have been out to grass valley before and it is very pretty.

sunny, that's nice steve will get some polish. maybe he will start up a polish breeding program at your place

Yes he would love to quit his job and raise chickens instead full-time. I've tried to tell him that no breeder quits their day job.

Still, it's a nice thought.

Sheryl I hadn't heard of a coop fire either. I don't know of any BYCers in Panther Valley though.

So sad that they lost their flock.

good luck! Ive been trying to get some wcb polish forever and EVERY SINGLE ONE i have gotten has been a roo, haha. go figure. if you guys do some kind of order id like to go in on it and do try #4 for a girl, lol. i know pam does not have WCB but i think she has buff laced..

If we order them, I'll gladly tack on a couple to my order and tet them to you.

Any input on hatcheries? Ideal looks cheapest for shipping, but Meyer has exactly what I want, and I've heard great things about them. Murray McMurray doesn't have the selection I want.

Hey Aubrey, congrats on your awesome coop and your girls are laying very well!! A couple of my ducks are laying and my Cochins both the Large and Bantams!

I have been trying to catch up with everyone's posts but you guys have been busy!

I would like to know if anyone on here is planning on going to the PPBA show in Stockton on the 28th & 29th? I will be there, leaving on Friday because Heather has entered 11 birds into the show. 4 Dutch, 4 Call Ducks and 2 Runner Ducks.....the kids entered birds a few years ago and had more fun when they entered birds than when we just visited so we are trying it again. Hope the weather isn't too crazy on Friday and Sunday for the drive. And I hope some of you guys will make it too!!

I'm sad today after hearing about the chicken coop fire last night in Panther Valley, I'm praying for them. They lost their whole flock in the fire. I don't know if it's one of us or not but my heart is going out to them.

Missy I don't think Wyandottes will be what you want right now. If I recall properly and of course I don't always but I do recall you need birds that won't fight. Wyandottes are supposed to be docile but I don't find that in my 3 Wyandottes. There is a Wyandotte thread on here perhaps talk to them first. My runt was pretty aggresive for a bit and didn't settle down until she went broody so now she's very docile to everyone in the flock. My other 2 are a hit and miss. Sylvia is the boss of everything and she makes sure everyone in the flock knows it. The only one who won't let her boss them are 2 of the older ones from Sunny, Monique and Sundae. Wynonna is in the middle of the whole pecking order thingy. I would find a breeder who specializes in this breed and make sure they have them very docile before you purchase them.

Perhaps Elizabeth could let us know how her Wyandottes are doing?

I have two Silver Laced Wyandottes, and I haven't had any problems with them at all. They were part of the batch I got new last spring. They seem pretty friendly and even tempered. I've never seen them fight with any of my other birds. I love the coloring! If I could figure out how to insert a picture from the one's I've already uploaded I'd put it in here for you.

DH and I are going, Sheryl is going and Aubrey and her BF are going. We are hoping for good weather as well!!!

Oh Missy. I would order from a different hatchery than Aubrey ordered from. I've heard that some hens will throw an abnormally skewed amount of pullets vs. cockerels and the hens that hatchery is using definitely have this problem!

OK I was just reading an article about marans that was translated from a french article and it states that there are reasons that marans eggs taste different. Their proteins are a little different from a typical farm egg (less in white and more in yolk, which may be why the yolk stands a little taller/firmer) but the biggest difference is the shells. Because they are so hard and non-porous they stay fresh much longer (need more study to find out how much longer) than other eggs. They also can handle being knocked around more because of the hard, thick shell. Unfortunately this is also why their hatch rate is also lower.

Doubt I'd ever be able to charge enough for these eggs to make any money but since Sheryl mentioned charging more for them I figured I'd better do the research to justify the up-charge. Who knows maybe we will find some gourmands in Reno that are as picky as I am about the taste of eggs.

Anyone's DD or DH need an idea for a science experiment? I propose testing this by doing the float test for freshness every week with different breed's eggs. They could even add a refrigerated vs room temp set of eggs for interest since most of Europe stores their eggs on the counter and folks say they are just fine there. In fact I've heard it said that the fridge may be drying eggs out faster causing them to spoil sooner especially when they are transferred to and fro causing condensation and bacteria to form.
