I'd be happy to get in on some of that spent grain! How fast does it go bad?![]()
From what I've been reading, you'll want to use the wet stuff within 10 days in spring weather, within 5 days in the summer. Some people freeze theirs in gallon-size bags, then pull a bag out and store it in the fridge while giving it to their chickens in appropriate ratios. Others dry theirs, then mix it in the regular food. If it goes sour, they dump it immediately in the compost, where it decomposes fast. They say it breaks up clay in gardens really well.
I'm thinking I could dry some in the oven on a low setting, or put a few trays in the furnace room, then store the rest in the freezer. We rotate out two 55-gallon composters, too. When we till garden #3, we could use a lot of grains plus horse manure to break up the soil, since the plot we're using hasn't been gardened in a few years. And further into the year, when we have even more chickens, it will be nice to have some more supplemental food.
