peep_show: Chicky Update!!!

I think there are only 6 girls out of the 18 NYD hatch you gave me. Sheeesh! Only 2/7 Marans and 4/10 Salmon Faverolles. I think Token is a boy but Dad thinks its a girl. I have 2 boys (one of each) for my hatching egg "supplier" and am saving one of each for the son of a friend who is also interested. That leaves at least 9 boys unclaimed (not counting Token) so I found a person on Craigslist in St. George who has a lot of acreage and is interested in growing them out. He said the chicks they'd ordered and grown out are just starting to lay but he needed some boys as they free range all day. I'm so happy that I don't have to send any to chicky heaven and if I'm wrong and he gets some girls....that's just good karma at work.

QuinnieWynz and Kentdalimp!!! I love finding peeps in our neck of the woods! I think evonne may have some silkies....I know she doesn't get on here much anymore but I will call and see if she knows of any around here. I lurk here a lot. I don't contribute much but I do enjoy the company, information, great ideas, and occasional super silliness that is shared on this thread.

Me too.

14 hours!!! No heat, no water, no nothin'? That would truly stink! I hope you are able to salvage your food. Time for solar panels or a generator or somethng to at least plug in the fridge and a little electric heater. We need to do the same thing! We are in the same boat. Everything here is electric except the stove/oven.

When we lived in California we always were getting power outages. Every single Christmas Eve we would get a power outage, it never failed, we lived there for 14 years and we would be wrapping presents in the dark with candles around here and there and the fire going.
Yeah that's why I'm interested in Daniel's wood heater. At least I'd be able to stay warm! The stove is gas, but the heater is forced air so it is dependent on electricity to function. You had mentioned you were interested in wind power Sunny. I am too - that certainly would have kept going all night!

This past summer, my family turned the electricity off for entire weekend... we did it in July so we didn't need heat and could cook outside. We were allowed to have a refrigerator and alarm clocks, but the showers had to be cold and the food had to either be cold or cooked outside. It was very educational, and it really made them think about how much harder we'd have to work in the winter for all the things we take for granted. I'm glad we have a yard here, because, if SHTF for a week or more, we could cook on the grill or dig a pit and set a grate over it, then bring hot rocks inside for warmth.

I know I can live without electricity and heat and such but I also know I would never want to.

I just spoke to John and he said Sundae laid her first egg for the year!

I can't wait to get home and see it!

Now if Monique starts her laying then all 8 of them will be laying eggs, wow, it's been so long now I think I forgot what it's like to have 8 chickens laying eggs.

Exactly! This is the perfect area for a combination of both. When it's not sunny it's usually windy. Certainly long enough to charge up some heavy duty batteries anyway. They even have smaller and better turbines now that can handle these strong winds. When I first looked into this eons ago that was a problem in high wind areas. I need to find a pic of one I was looking at awhile ago on-line. It is very sleek and low profile so it can take a pounding.
