My horse shelters are not permanent, I have been told that as long as they are not permanent I am ok well, no one complained.
The chicken coop, we are looking at 8x8 it was my understanding that if it is under 120 sq feet we don't need a permit, is that old code? Have you had any problems with wind? I am thinking of using concrete blocks as my base and not sinking them into the ground that way it us up off the ground by a about 8 inches (I think they are that tall).
No HOA's, sounds like we are in good shape as far as the neighbors complaining, we will clip wings so they can graze through our yard occasionally when the dogs are not present.
I am sure I have more questions as we get closer, and after our babies arrive.

I had heard the same thing about under 120 sq feet not needing a permit but that is washoe county. I couldn't find Reno codes easily online. anyway, mine is less than 120 sq ft. and I followed the setbacks that were in my cc&r's and it's on cement blocks so technically not permanent.

The coop is almost chicken-ready, though it's still far from beautiful. All I have left is attaching the run and nesting box doors, sealing a few gaps, and painting the inside with a primer. Still no pictures of it. Hopefully I'll remember to snap a few tomorrow, before my husband takes the new camera to Manila and I'm stuck with the grainy cell phone.

I got her the red wine & olive oil. She ate some of it. I'm checking on her all of the time. I don't think she's drunk though. She is pushing like trying to lay an egg. I put my finger in her vent and I still didn't feel the egg but if it's up above then I need to try it again. She's not happy when I do it though.

How long are antibiotics good for? I still have some from when Rotisserie got her name changed to Gourmet.

Mine has an expiration date on the bottle. I bought mine around the same time Aubrey bought hers. I think it's good for 2 to 3 years. I need to check again.

Sheryl! If she has hung on this long please check out "ascites"..I thought my Main BR was egg bound, but it ended up being this collection of fluid which initially seems like eggbound-ness..

It's very easy to take care of..is the hen getting very heavy in her bottom- cushion area. (aka as abdomen in chicken anatomy)..mine wasn't eating wasn't drinking water..I was soaking her every day and she just kept getting heavier! I did tetracycline which reduced her inflammation..but it wasn't taking care of the swelling...some young person was having the same problem at the same time and he finally let me know what it was..all you have to do is get a syringe, poke her in the water sack and drain the fluid..it may sound bad, but to see her be relieved so quickly made it all worth while..I would hesitate to stick anything into a chicken internally unless it was the very last resort, or you could feel the egg and knew that was the problem!

I'm starting to think Ascite too. I stopped the BOSS because it can lead to Ascite with us being in high altitude it's even more common. I just don't think I can poke her. Her comb is dark red, just a bit brighter than normal and she complains a bit but nothing else.

Oh yeah I forgot about set backs! Most people ignore them because (according to the RGJ anyway) the stated set backs are 50 feet from any dwelling and 5 feet, I think, from property lines? Jeez I can't remember what the setbacks from property lines were but it is an unrealistic number for most tract/city lot homes. Like I say though, a "movable" coop solves most everything. That and free eggs to neighbors really helps too.

Well maybe not to the super cranky neighbor that wouldn't appreciate them anyway.

I want to say thank you everyone and I'm so glad you are here with me and for me. I found a tumor under her right wing. I'm trying to figure out how I want to put her down peacefully and without pain. She won't be coming out of this for sure. Boy she was a great hen!

I need to take her to the UNR extension and have them check to see what it is she has. I do not believe it's Maerks since she does not have any of the symptoms for it but I do need to find out what it is she has.

As far as what she has... you took so many precautions when I came to visit... you're so careful that I doubt it's something contagious. It's not like she goes to chicken daycare when you're at work.
