Nevadans?

Hi Sheryl!
I just went through this with my #1 boss lady hen...she just kept getting heavier and heavier and i could tell she was feeling very uncomfortable...some kid on her was going through the same thing., his Mom figured out it was ascites and they drained her..I did the same thing with mine, but she is totally back to normal and running the coop again.( I don't have a rooster, at the moment). I only poked her once and got a syringe full of fluid out, but she continued to drain..I think it might take forever for the fluid to be reabsorbed...and for poor Groana I just didn't want to put her through that any longer.. I di make sure that there was Tetracycline Hyd in their water for the next week..they all look super healthy now that I think about it!

Trust your own judgement on this...sounds like you're on your own anyway, Huh! Thank God for BYC!

I know, right? Lol!

Elizabeth, Joe stayed in with the chickens for a few minutes since he was suddenly attached to them. Especially Gai Tom Ka, which is his as long as he can prove compassionate to them. I was in the house and Sahara ran in saying, "Come quick! Joe says the chickens keep fighting!" I had to explain several times that they do that... it was totally natural. I compared it to Shadow when she insisted on being queen dog over Oh'no and Tater, and they understood.

Does anyone know how to change the message signature? I need an update now.
at the top of the page click on "My Profile" then scroll way down towards the bottom and you'll find your signature and you can edit the text. I'm glad Joe took a liking to the BR. She is very friendly.

Good Morning,
Not much sleep last night, worried about the temperature. Quick run to Home Depot this morning for some chain to hang the heat lamps so I can adjust the temperature better. Had one sick chick last night (woken up by my daughter at 11:30), gave some yogurt and ASV in some water, a little yolk, she seems to be much better this morning. I was so afraid I would wake up with a deceased chick. I am not prepared to lose any. Cleaned the brooder, fresh water, chick starter, played with them.... Now to clean the kitchen.
Enjoy the snow for those in the Reno area!

So glad I work from home today! That truck is staying parked right where it is. But I do have to drive up to Lemmon Valley on Wednesday and it's supposed to snow again.

How are the babies today?

I think I peeved the chickens off enough to deny me eggs. They keep singing out there but nothing yet. Original is cussing me out! How DARE I make her establish pecking order with 6 other girls??? (Plus she has to stay in the new coop until she recognizes it as her new home.) Spoiled chicken is not amused.

I am glad you did not have to drive in it, I hear it is worse up North... Usually is, as we are down South of town.

Chicks look good, Do they normally sleep alot during the day, and they are not eating as much as they did yesterday... is that normal? They seem to be pecking at the shavings alot, will it hurt them?

Sounds like you have a princess in your coop! :)

They probably ate more yesterday because they had been several days without food, even while still digesting their yolk sacks. They sleep like crazy for the first little bit, just like human babies. Too many shavings can compact in their croups, but if they already all know where the food is, then they'll probably just peck and not eat much. Keeping a barrier like a towel will keep them from eating too many shavings until they know exactly what will feed them.

Thank you!
I also researched through the forums, found the same information. I initially had a towel on top of shavings, took that out this morning and put paper towels on top of the shavings but a few were eating the shavings. So, I took out all the shavings and put down paper towels, at least for a couple of days. Added some ASV in the water incase any one of them may have ingested too many shavings. Wow, 27 chicks is alot to take care of!

Thank you for your advice, just a neurotic new "mom".

Afternoon everyone! Nice to meet another new person on here, sorry I can't take your roo, we are not allowed to have roos in parts of Reno and I'm in that part.

Congrats on the new chicks Jann, very nice!

Hi Stacey, Patty isn't getting bigger at all and I do feel something like an egg now but it's not in the vent. The whole swelling has moved now to the very back side of her. I'm not sure if it's just the swelling that his hard, a tumor or an actual egg. I do not know how to even get this out if I could.

I have Patty isolated right now trying to figure out how to fix this. She's pushing like trying to get an egg out. Can an egg with shell and all get out of the vent? Is that even possible?
