Nevadans?

OK who wants to share a cow with me? I don't mind milking for a week a month but all the time would get to me.

Off to catch up on pms.
The guy at work I was telling you about says that he gets his raw milk by "purchasing" part of a cow - that is the only legal way. He said that he got his deal through that Stonehouse Ranch that someone on here posted about having lamb (Missy?). Anyway, they do the cow sharing thing and he delivers to Reno and Carson City!

I there a way to make an easy and quick brooder At home???
i can't wait for my babies even if they grow up at missy's house.
All you really need is a large cardboard box, for the first few weeks anyway. After that, I use a 100 gallon horse watering trough. Makes a geat brooder and easy to clean, too! Plus, it will last forever.

ETA: Those plastic totes you can get at WalMart are also good for the first few weeks.

We use the 100 gallon horse trough too. It's perfect. We put a wire over the top and use the first indent to put a roost.

I haven't planted anything just for them. I let them in the garden once I'm done with it and they clean it up for me. What a lot of people plant for their chickens with the screens is wheat grass which is very good for them. You can buy some wheat grass seeds at Greens Feed on North Virginia St across from Bonanza. I buy what ever I can from them. They are great people to work with and Cindy really knows her chicken stuff, she once had chickens and she's the one who does their chick orders. They also have a rooster or 2 for sale there at times too, you just need to ask them if they have any.

I did get some alfafa from them and I soaked it and fed it to the ducks and chickens, they just loved it.

Welcome to the Nevada thread too!

I love that! Big hair chickens!

It reminds me of a pair of black and white polish my cousin and I had as kids. Their names were Trish and Tony and they were too much fun. Maybe they will be his gateway chicken!

i use rubbermaid bins. I cut a section out of the lid and cover with hardware cloth securing it with zip ties. I did that because the first time i was brooding in the house and i have a cat.

I have a small side yard (15X50) where my coop/run (6X20) are and I'd like to plant some forage for my 11 girls. I have 6 Black Stars and 5 California Whites. What could I plant as forage for them. I'm also considering a screened frame (don't know what they're called) to put down over some of the new growth so the chooks don't eat em down to the ground. The 2X6 frame w/screen will let the new shoots get a good start and the hens can eat what grows up through the screen. I'd like to plant the whole area, which doesn't seem like much. What have you fellow BYCers had good luck with in this Reno climate?
You might want to make short raised beds in the area with 2x4s to give what you plant half a chance at growing. i don't know what your soil is like but ours is horrible--dry, rocky clay.
I have read that purslane is excellent for omega-3 and good for chickens. do a search on chicken forage and you might come up with some other ideas. I plan to try something similar this year. it's my first year with chickens, though so I don't have direct experience yet.

OK, this is sooooo funny to me! First, I can just hear your husband asking for "big hair" chickens in Spanish!

How did he say it? I have a Cuban friend and she's always entertaining with what she calls things!

And Trish and Tony are the funniest names for "gateway" chickens!
He calls them copetones. a copete is like a bouffant hairstyle so it fits.
