Nevadans?

Hey, I googled the Golden Cuckoo Maran, and you'll never guess what!! I made one last year, only with a strawberry comb looking thing. I had a wyandotte/silkie roo and a cuckoo maran hen. I need to post pics sometime.
Aubrey, Petey's babies are so cute, I love the chimpmunck guys, :D
Missy, can you tell who the boys and girls are yet? I know its been less then a day..lol.

Nope, especially since Elizabeth took the oldest ones and we have the youngest. There are a couple that keep staring me down, though, and pecking at others. One lavender, in particular, thinks he's all tough. That's about the closest I can guess.

Im already guessing gender on my showgirls. I mean sheesh, as soon as i put the marans in the brooder one of the chipmunks ran up to it and began trying to dominate it and peck it on the head. Then it fell asleep on top of him in the midst of it all, hahaha

I'm getting all suspicious of roos now. I was trying to relax and just enjoy the chicks but it's hard not to guess. From my original batch of 6 from candy, I suspect the buff x wheaten is a roo. he's the biggest and his legs are really thick. then one I think is a wheaten is getting a lot of dark feathers so I'm thinking that's a roo based on what I've read. the lavenders are still smaller so it's hard for me to see the combs. I'm not so good at seeing those rows of peas yet. the other two w/bw I'm not sure yet. I'll have to take some new photos and post later. Of all the new chicks, I'm still trying to see what I've got. The marans are the smallest. I think they are a week younger, maybe? they are both looking rooish but it could be just paranoia.

they are all getting along pretty well so far.

Out of the ones I have left, the biggest ones all look like roos to me. Then I remind myself that, now that I have mostly little ones, I'm comparing the bigger ones and making assumptions.

I still don't have this roo-prediction thing down. When Original and Extra Crispy were babies, they progressed exactly the same, feathered out exactly the same. My only indication was when I'd try to open the kennel door and one would run up to peck my fingers. But the other did the same thing, just to a lesser extent. It was finally, at 12 weeks old, that Extra Crispy developed a comb and wattles while Original's stayed the same. Then his tail feathers started to get pointy, and I knew he was condemned. But after we butchered him, Original's comb and wattles got just as big, so we freaked out a little bit, hoping we didn't have a second rooster. She also developed a fat butt, though. Honestly, I think she's a little masculine for a hen, with her tendencies and wattles, but she lays me some good eggs and doesn't crow... that's all I need.

Who am I to judge, though? If a large build and a tendency toward more masculine activities are a indications of a male... well, that's why I keep my hair long. I've fooled you all so far, haven't I?

Here's Lavern

Oh she is beautiful! The lighter chick is starting to get feathers in on the wing tips and a few are very light, almost white but all the rest are very dark gray.

I love green, blue, turquoise, olive... so I don't care what the mix is, it will be interesting to see what color of eggs they'll produce when they start to lay. I love a variety of colors in the egg "basket" so a mix is what I'm looking for.

Nope, Seth's chick is a wheaten Ameraucana. Clean faces, single combs and feathers on the shanks crop up once in awhile still, even from the best breeders

Even more often in the project birds like the lavenders. One of my lavender chicks in this hatch has feathered shanks also. These two were sold as culls

Course I don't show so I don't care about SOP. I just love all the cuteness!

The Marans can be very hard to tell boy from girl when they are young especially by comb size alone. They are a more regal bird so they have a "stance" that looks rooish even in the females. Plus they have really big combs compared to many breeds. The way the tail feathers look when they first start to come in is a dead giveaway though. If I don't mark them at this early stage though I get confused later. The tail difference isn't as well defined when they are a little older.

Of course by 2 months or so they really look different again. Except for that one pullet Aubrey had which Genny thought was a roo and I thought was a girl (sorry Genny is almost always right on gender so I have to remind folks that I was right on this one bird hahaha) they are almost always really obvious by three months for sure. It was the huge comb and wattles that threw Genny off so keep in mind the Marans just do have bigger combs and wattles.

Hahahahaha! I can totally relate to this comment! Sometimes I feel like I have more "guy" tendencies than my husband does! Luckily he is totally comfortable with his "feminine" side and with my (sometimes) masculine qualities. Luckily for both of us it doesn't translate to the physical attributes. Sorry guys but I just can't imagine!!! I'm quite happy with my female form.

My Miss Bossy (the pink egg layer and why I encouraged you to not pass over her eggs) has feathered legs. Her mom was a Light Brahma and dad's an EE that has the blue gene.

I saw your post that you candled the eggs I gave you! How exciting that so many are developing!

Thank you so much for hatching these for me so that I when I sell eggs I know what I'm offering! I have the due date on my cell phone, can't wait to see what you get! How many of the Polish were developing?
Oh, I'm so excited!
