The older chicks moved to the bathroom brooder today. With all that extra room, immediately they started dust bathing, scratching bedding everywhere, and challenging each other. The dogs sat on the other side and watched. I have pics... which I can give everyone in 3 weeks.

My son is all of the sudden stuffed up and his nose is cherry red. I gave him some Benadryl, to see if it was an allergy. I don't think a cold would come on that fast, right after I had moved the chicks to a new brooder with fresh bedding. Hope it doesn't get too bad! He wasn't allergic to the chicks we had last year.

Update: The Benadryl gave him relief within 20 minutes, so looks like we have an allergy. Now to figure out if it's the rice hulls, the pine shavings, the dust in general, or the chickens.

Maybe it's just the dust in general. I didn't wear a mask the first time I cleaned out the coop and it flared up my sinuses so bad and I ended up with another sinus infection. I'm not sure what the age range is for children's zyrtec but my son takes that for allergies and I take adult zyrtec--the generic kind.

i like it

Thanks i think it might be my blue birchin marans when her paint splatter is off. Her egg is third down in the left hand column. gold with little dark spots. But those dark dull colored ones are a mystery too. I know baby lays the nice chocolate eggs with the dark spots but the dull dark ones are confusing. Idk, mama is supposed to lay a dark egg and shes been giving me egg songs lately so maybe she lays the lighter ones and molly lays the dull ones? omg, im going round in circles in my head, im so confused.

I hope at least one of my GC marans is a pullet. I like my welsummer eggs but I'd like some even darker ones.

I know one of my marans is a roo! Either that, or an evil little girl. When they got in the bathroom brooder, right after scratching and flapping, he immediately jumped on one of the lavenders. I saw him do it a few times. Just because he could. Was hoping that maybe it was one of the black culls, but he has some very feathered feet.

Missy, It does sound like Joe has an allergy. It can be anything though, chicken dander or any of the bedding. I get stuffed up a bit when we change to the pine bedding. I know I have a pine allergy because I always get stuffed up once we put our Christmas tree in the house. But it's worth it to me. I also am allergic to one of my medications but I can't stop taking it, it's one of the most important ones I must take for my liver disease. I take zyrtec to help with the rashes.

Aubrey, I will get off work around 7pm and won't be able to get to your house until I get home or at least stop by on my way home.

Sunny, when are you planning on going over that hill? It doesn't look good to me going over it this week but I know you are on a timeline. It might be good to go with someone who travels that hill all of the time. I would be really happy to take you but I'm working all week long and my children are coming Friday and Saturday nights so I can't go. I told my youngest son to not come because of the storms and they live in Tacoma, Washington but he says he's coming anyways. I know he can drive in the stuff like it's nothing but still other people though who think they can?

Pam, I expect someday I shall be just like you trying to count my chickens and there are just too many to count. Wow, just wow!

Oh and I have a question for all of you incubator professionals on here. When can I open the incubator to get any of the ducklings out? I've posted this before in several places but no one has answered it so I'm hoping to find out from everyone here. Missy would like to take her ducklings home the day they hatch and I would love to give them to her as well so her imprint will be on them from day 1 but I read we should not open the incubator until all of the hatching is over and it can take several days. I don't like the idea of leaving them in there overnight or anything like that. What do you do?

I love your brooder Missy, who's that watching the babies in there? Mille is doing a great job watching over her babies, she really enjoys having little chicks for her watch over. We told her she had to make sure the chicks were good and she does just that. If I'm in another room she will come get me if the chicks are peeping a lot.
