HI Sorry I am absent so much!!! But I read through all the posts and check out all your amazing pictures and videos This time I only had to read 190 posts

I like the Farmers Market idea!! I would love to join in my issue is having time to make items to fill a spot..... birdhouses, handmade greeting cards and random things I can come up with

I would have eggs but mostly Duck eggs (I have runners, cayugas, blue swedish, and muscovies laying now) when i am not incubating them...

Here is what I have been busy doing:

44 hatched(standard and bantam cochins, white americaunas, show girls and dutch) plus 6 muscovies and 5 more call ducks!!!

and our latest.....my daughter Heather got an Easter surprise....a pair of Sebastopol goslings!!!!

They were hatched Friday and I drove to Auburn to pick them up Saturday....Jacqueline and Julius she named them !!

Well I really hope to see some of you on Saturday at the swap! 8-2pm 315 Spokane in the Feed World parking lot..... I am to meet Seth's Mom there so she can pick up some Show Girls... Just ask for me!(Julie) I am terrible with names but I will remember some of your BYC handles LOL!!

I contemplated buying blue swedish this year, but decided on cayugas for my daughter... all the reviews said cayugas were quieter. How's your experience with blue swedish and noise/activeness?

I might come by Feed World on Saturday... my husband will probably discourage me, because I might just bring something home. Is anyone else going?

Sunny, what an amazing story! Are you going to try to keep her, after such a survival effort?

Bees are tempting, but I've been afraid of them since I was a kid. People all over this neighborhood have mini-beehives. With the lavender and hyssop in my yard, I'm not too worried about attracting pollinators. But I'm probably one of the few people that can say that. Ron, have you thought of expanding enough to rent out your hives to farmers?

Unfortunately I don't have time for a project like that. But between my place and the Carson River is a large alfalfa ranch. I'm hoping my bees benefit from that!

Oh hahaha! I don't think you'd have a problem selling them at a Farmer's Market. Steve took 6 dozen of Genny's eggs to his work and they were all gone in a couple of hours! Some folks were mad that they didn't get any so we have a bunch more to take tomorrow. We charged $4 a dozen. I'm thinking we could sell 10 dozen an hour at $5 a dozen but we won't know til we try! Are you game to sell your eggs there?

Finally!!! Can't wait to buy honey from you! I know it will take some time but unless we move far away we will wait for it!

Oh, are you still willing to raise turkeys and process them for us for Thanksgiving? I keep seeing turkeys poults for sale but have resisted because we had talked about you doing it for us this year. You had mentioned getting some heritage turkeys and Steve and I would love to reserve one of those. We don't get such a huge crowd as we used to and a 40 lb bird (after processing) is just too much! A 20-25 lb bird is just perfect for us. Let me know if you still want to do this and what it would cost. Thanks Ron!

You bet I'm game! I'm only getting $3 right now so that would make a big difference.

The heritage turkey sites that I've found won't ship to Nevada for some reason. I'm still thinking about getting some though. Big R will have them around the first of May so I will let you know by then.

Thanks for the info. I know we have them I saw one when we first moved in, but I had no idea they'd kill a full grown chicken. Looks like I'll have to come up wth a fort knox style run for my hens.

I'm so jelous you're getting bees! I wanted to get some but my boys all looked instantly horrified. We eat so much honey that I thought it would be a great idea. My other half is allergic to stings though.

I have a Fort Knox run (actually two) for my chickens. Check out these pics. In the first two you can see how the lower part of the "walls" is 2x3 welded wire 4 ft high and buried 1 ft., overlain with hardware cloth 3 ft high and 1 ft buried. The upper part is all chicken wire, with chicken wire over the top also as you can see in the last picture. The posts are 8 ft 4x4s sunk 2 ft into the ground, leaving a 6 ft. high interior, which makes it easy for me to get in and clean, fill water and feeders, etc. The last picture is my old coop/run, which is now enclosed by a much larger coop and run.

I am bad about reading the posts, but when I did I noticed the swap this weekend at Feed World. Is there some I can read more about it, maybe I missed it on the loop. Can anyone come? Can we bring some of our 6 week olds to swap? We have some Barred Rocks, and would like maybe some others.
Do we need to pre sign up, or is this just an informal gathering?

Thank you for the birthday wishes! A friend offered to babysit the kids last night so we could go out for an early birthday celebration. we ate Thai food--I had yummy pumpkin curry. Then we went to see the Hunger Games--I have read the books and it's a very intriguing series. anyway, I got sick to my stomach during the movie and had to leave. It was disappointing to miss the rest of the movie but really nothing I could do about it. I went straight to bed and feel okay today.

All 3 chickies are doing really well!!! I am so tickled that all of my pullet eggs hatched! They are eating and drinking well. Making a mess with the mash, of course. They are such lively little chicks!!!

what a great story about your 3rd chick! she's a real survivor!

I finally got the greenhouse done. My seedlings aren't happy with me for letting them stay out last night. They all recovered under the sun today, but they were looking pretty sad this morning. So I set this up in my driveway. The top peels back, and all sides fasten to the frame with velcro. Then, in the heat of summer, I can put sensitive plants under there and cover with shade cloth.

Well I picked up my beehive starter kit today from LS Bees.

My bees will be here next Tuesday. I can't wait - I've been wanting to do this for quite some time now. I'm hoping it causes my garden yield to go up significantly this year!

I think you can show up. They ask for a donation if you want to sell your birds since it's a fundraiser for the poultry show in november. Julie (pigtail) posted more info on it somewhere in this thread recently.

Good job Sunny!!!! So glad to hear she's doing well too! I had to help a chick and wished I had intervened earlier because it was the way she was positioned in the egg. She never could have come out on her own. These are good stories for those of us hatching, to store for future incubation's where we may need to intervene. I think the hardest part it to figure out when to make the leap!

OK about the chicky. Well I left it in the shell for another 20 hours after realizing it wasn't ready to hatch. I thought it had died because it was quiet and hadn't made any progress. After the other chicks that had hatched were completely dried off, eating, drinking and happily settled into their new brooder, I decided it was time to clean out the bator.

I reached in to grab the last egg, trying to decide if I should do an eggtopsy when the thing started peeping loudly in my hand! I looked over at Steve and he says "Oh my word that chick is still alive!" I just looked back at him, totally shocked myself! Well I can't see a distressed chick that had hung in there for so long and not try to help so I rushed into the bathroom, turned on the water at the sink. Got it to a nice temperature, barely warm to my hands, and started washing that chick off shell and all. I exposed her head by removing shell and membrane and used a washcloth to get the gunk off of her head but doused the rest of her under running water.

The water was running pretty good, I mean it wasn't beating her to death but it wasn't a trickle either. I wanted her unstuck. After that I tried to get the top of the shell to loosen from the bottom half but it just kinda fell apart leaving me with a large piece of shell stuck to her back and part of her legs. The umbilical cord was still attached to it so I left it on her and put her back into the incubator (the running water had loosened it a lot so I didn't think it would cause a problem).

Well when I checked on her a few hours later she was running around the bator looking like she had a turtle shell on her back. I realized that it had not slipped off like I thought it would so out she came again. The dried yolk sac was stuck to her and the shell. Since it was dried I cut it off the shell leaving a teeny bit of shell attached cause I was afraid of drawing blood if I cut the sac itself. Put her back in again to dry off and after another 2 hours she was dried and the sac had disappeared. I assume she finally absorbed all she could over all that time and was now doing quite well! So I guess they can absorb their yolks well after pipping and still do well!

She is happy and healthy and resting with her hatchmates now. They are all eating and drinking which I always stress about until I see them actually doing it well. So I am very happy she not only survived but is thriving!

Hopefully I'll get pics tomorrow afternoon! I need to mark her because she came from such a dark egg!
