Nevadans?

Jann I've had 1 super agressive female in my flock before. They are no fun either. She fought with the roos just like they fight each other! Hackles flared, jumping high with spurs and feet up scratching. Boy was she mean! I hate to get rid of a good layer but I don't miss that one! Post another photo in a week or so. I want to see how those saddle feathers look then. I still think Happy might be a roo because of those 2 long feathers angling down on his/her sides but sure hope I'm wrong on that one.
Thank you Sunny! Well, I suppose we will have to wait. I will post some more pictures of Happy in a couple of weeks.

We let the chickens out of a bit of free ranging this a.m. about an hour later they were all back in their run, amazing how they knew how to get back since it was the first time we let them out thru the gate on the side. We were impressed!

So I've been thinking about the respiratory illness outbreak and all of my neighbors that have gotten chickens and decided that I'd like to purchase some pamphlets online exlaining coryza and ones offering explanations and reasons for quarantine and knowing where your birds come from so I can give them to my neighbors and let them know that they wouldn't only be protecting their flocks but also everyone else's on the street. Does anyone know where I can get these? We had some at the poultry show...

Speaking of which, I'm sorry missy but I feel it would be very important to consider culling your extra Roos rather than give them away even with full disclosure. Beause this illness travels by air I worry that someone else's flock could get sick unknowingly that lives near whoever gets the Roos. The person who gets them may not know how serious the illness is and be careless an sell birds on CL that have been near the roo. It's sort of frightening to think about. I would really hate for that roo to end up in my neighborhood. I'm sorry to say, but I think you'll be doing the community a huge service to not let birds leave the property. Even vaccinated they become carriers and can spread the disease.

they may have been free from a govt agency. sheryl will know. I'm betting you can get them free because they want to educate the public.

Yeah, I'm still dealing with the tenderheartedness of the whole thing. I need to toughen up.

But I do agree with you... I wouldn't accept a roo from anyone that had been sick, after what I've learned. My decision to keep the birds that have been sick may change once I see how many eggs I'm actually getting. We can still eat the ones that have had it... it's still a shame. But at least we're getting some kind of return, and it's not a total loss.

I'm curious to know if anyone in the neighborhood has had it, but the only one I know is about 8 blocks up, with at least 10 henhouses in between. Everyone in between is a total stranger to me, and I'd have to get really nosey, walking the streets and listening, to even find out who had them.

OK I figured something was up with $19. LOL

Yes you can get the pamphlets free. I have them, but not sure where they are at the moment or I could tell you exactly where to go. I'll try to find the packet.

I'm sorry for being so blunt missy. This could happen to anyone and it's killing me that it happened to you because you an your family are such amazing and kind hearted people. It's definitely a test but I know you guy will do what's right. I do know a few people in the neighborhood with birds, one of th being in the next ally up so I'll talk to them and see if any of them are going through this or are responsible. Massive hugs, I'm sorry I came into this episode so late ;( once again I'm sorry if I came off harsh, I really didn't mean to.

I didn't see it as being harsh at all. The only hurt is when I think of killing off my babies for what seems like no good reason. And I appreciate the bluntness, because one of my pet peeves are people who try to veil the truth because they don't want to appear harsh.

It's like when I say, "I can't sing."
And people respond, "Oh, stop saying that about yourself. I'm sure you're great."
And I reply, "Can you paint a portrait?"
And they reply, "Well, no..."
And I say, "Well, I can't sing."
Just saying "I'm sure you're great" doesn't make the person talented. And saying, "Oh, that's so cruel to kill anything" doesn't mean that this nasty disease needs to be spread around Reno.

And thank you, I would love to know if anyone else has it. I know the little hippie group by the 7-11 has a henhouse (other side of the brown building that used to be a photography studio) and one up the hill from that side of Lander. I just know about the Lander one because I heard one laying while walking the other day.

Such a tough situation but I agree. Better to eat the roos than have it spread around. *hugs* Good luck in dealing with the neighbors. I hope they are as reasonable as you!

Aubrey you are one of the sweetest spirits on the planet!!! And your honesty is one of the things that makes you so amazing!

Speaking of singing... I would really love to get a small group together to do local community performances. Anyone on here that can sing? Yea I do mean really sing. Not sure when I will have auditions but I'm looking into a place to hold rehersals now. Knowing how to improvise a great harmony is a huge plus too. Music performed will be from different genres and group input is welcome but I will be the deciding vote on what gets chosen and what doesn't.

But if you want any help painting posters or something, let me know! Or I can grow a bunch of flowers around the stage, or be the traveling security for the group.

Just throwing in... if Mandy's farmer's market idea gets going, there's a possible venue for you.
