Nevadans?

All of your chicken feed and water need to be put away before dark each night to keep the mice from getting into it. Mice do not have a sphincter muscle, so they dribble urine where ever they go

I have to put all of the feeders in a garbage can at night because I tried hanging them from the ceiling and the mice climbed the walls and jumped in!

Missy and Sunny, The eggs go into lockdown this coming Monday for a Thursday hatch

All 9 buff x wheaten (4 extras if someone is interested) and 5 W/BW/SP eggs are looking good!
I may be wrong here, but in my case, at least, having mice crawl into my chicken coop is a current problem. They're going to keep finding their way in, as long as the door is open for the chickens, Unless this is a case where frequent spraying has the same effect as "therapeutic" daily antibiotics, weakening the immune system and causing a problem for human consumption, I'm willing to spray often just for the germs the rodents might bring in.

Candy, thank you. I don't know why that never occured to me... everyone talks about hanging the feeders, but that makes sense that I need to do more. It's bad enough that the mice can come eat the little bits that are scattered on the floor.

It looks like I have at least 1 buff x wheaten pullet here, But I'll try to get hold of Lacey, since some of these on my property are supposed to be hers and now they're less than desirable. I'll ask my husband if we want to try for another, since he likes the coloring so much. But we have to stop at a certain point for space!

Sheryl, I would love to buy some of your pasta as well. Our 6th wedding anniversary is on the 20th (and he might be out of town on business then, but there's always another night) and I would love to serve something that's mostly locally made.

Missy, that sounds good too. Do you know what kind of pasta you want? I do have ravioli's already made and they are to die for. It's Nonni's recipe that's been in the family for hundreds of years.

Missy, call the USDA hotline and tell them what you are going through. They will not take chickens away or turn anyone in all they do is come to your property and inspect the flock. They usually take samples and test them to let you know what you actually have and will help you treat for it as well. They are here to help us backyard chicken folks knowing we don't have the funds like the big industries do. I think it's worth a try.

Missy, You ought to send me side shots of the heads and tails on your buffs since it looks like all three might be pullets

Let me know how many of the W/BW you have decided on.

Looks like I will be getting some hatching eggs next week that are BLRWs that are from the same lines as my beautiful splash pullet I posted a picture of a little while back. This line is harder to come by, so I am excited

Oxine is it is stronger than bleach, I have been a bleacher for decades. Floors, counters, in the bathroom..................Oxine will kill the same germs and many more with a much smaller dose and I tell you I barely smell it like I do bleach and I don't have to use as much as I feel I do when I use bleach.

A lot of people use it to disinfect coops, stalls, dog houses. It's works great. But the curing factor it amazing. And if you read the reports it actually does KILL the viruses. There's a list on one of the links I think, that tells you what viruses it's has been so successful at killing off. I woulnd't mist a non sick bird unless it had been in contact with one that is ill. OR around here I've quarentined and still ended up that something hit and I spray them all, so now when I bring home a new bird (I'm talking like auction birds or from somewhere I' have seen) and make sure I'm not bringing something hidden in. I use it in the waterers and I also use ACV to keep the waterer and plastic clear, which I've been bad about lately, since the wrist (I was doing good to even open and fill them) and have to do some soaking and brushing. They aren't horrible, but they aren't spotless, so I'll wash them in soap and water, then rinse and soak them again in Oxine and water. I don't even let them dry, since I add Oxine to the water anyway.

I mentioned before that we all had the flu and I sprayed the house. While my daughter and grand daughter held onto it for over a week, we were all better in like 2-3 days. I just misted the air. I had a cold coming on and did the same thing and I didn't get the full cold. The next day after felling those first signs I was fine. I don't push a lot of things, but I figure if the viruses can be fought and are no more, we won't have to worry about them later on. And trust me I do more things naturally than any other way. I just hapen to really like this stuff, heard a lot about it here on BYC and was on one of the threads and they put the link for the sale and no shipping and I bought it.

Here is the website again for "The Many Uses of Oxine" that I found useful, with the suggested dilution amounts for the different applications. I bought several bottles (gallon size) of distilled water and added the Oxine amounts for the different applications and wrote on each jug what that application is for. I have one marked for the auto humidity tank for my incubator (7 drops per gallon) and one for dipping hatching eggs in before incubating (4 oz. per gallon.) I have hatching eggs coming in the mail next week and plan to do the Oxine dip on them.

Well, I definitely have a broody. She was still in the nest box this a.m. and gave me a little hiss when I petted her. Sheryl, you have turned into the duckling enabler! I am just not ready to get into ducks yet, though.

thanks for all the info on Oxine, Kim and Candy. I am definitely going to order some.

good luck on your hatch, candy! I was so lucky on my pullet ratio from the 6 I got from you. 1 W roo and then possibly one lav roo though I'm not sure yet or I'm just in denial

Congrats on your BLRW hatching eggs on the way! Some day I want a Splash pullet. they are just gorgeous. I really liked that splash roo from Kirstie and hated to give him away. Even though he had the wrong comb, he was a special guy and so pretty in his feathering.

Missy, seems like a layer of straw might help your dust issue, as Ron suggested. I use shavings and some straw and the shavings are really dusty. I put straw only out in the run though.

Sheryl, I would love some ravioli. Is it any particular flavor? I can make up a pesto cream with basil and oregano from the garden, or do a homemade marinara. Maybe I'll even butcher up a rabbit to grill up, and serve it with fresh lettuce.

As far as the USDA and ameraucana pictures, I'll put that on my list of things to do today! I'm kind of sensitive about strange people coming onto my property, but I suppose it would be more good than harm.
