Haha that looks about right!

5 days old. Cute pic. Is that a parade balloon?
LOL!

well geeze Sunny congrats on the Lavs. i have ALWAYS envied them, I had no clue she had some for sale!!!
Oh that's cause she got there after you left. I got the only lavs she had except for 1. Oh, I forgot she had some bigger ones though. They were about 2 months old.

Today while I was outside, the little ducks discovered the pond. They had a blast, diving deep into it and splashing around. For about 20 seconds, until the big ducks saw them and ran into the water to chase them off.

Jerks.

I'm sure they'll all get along eventually, right?
This is how your little ducks see your big ones

Uh oh! chicken math....

Thanks, Elizabeth. It was a good day. We didn't do anything huge, because I haven't been well lately. And on top of that, I got so sunburnt yesterday that I woke up pretty sick today. But we had a great dinner. Homemade ravioli, from-scratch sauce made with homegrown tomatoes, and heirloom Italian green beans. These all came from Sheryl, and boy were they tasty!!! The high point of the day was being able to share my plants with other people!!! It's a huge ego boost to hear how cool you are for raising something and giving it away. Lol. I hope everyone's gardens are very productive.

I planted the bush beans yesterday and today. I still have to transplant the eggplant, peppers, basil, and winter squash, then plant the pole beans and corn. And I have to plant Garden #3, but we plan to do that as a family tomorrow. The tomatoes, at least.

Elizabeth, did you count the total cockerels in the entire order? Including my hamburg cockerel, you might have more than the 10% of your sexed order, and might be able to get a bit of a refund. I can't tell yet if my silkie is a pullet or not. The naked neck has some red on its neck, but it's not on the comb or wattles... it's on an area that would normally be covered by feathers... so I don't know if that's indicative of anything. The only one that I can totally tell is a cockerel is the hamburg. He looks like he has a huge wad of cinnamon chewing gum on his forehead.
Thank you Missy, I'm very glad you enjoyed the dinner. I've never called them heirloom Italian green beans before but I love it. I guess they would be called heirloom since these beans have been going in the family for over 60 years now.

Ron, I totally forgot about George Carlin until you mentioned it. I had to roll my eyes once I read it and said dang it but of course. I guess I won't be using that word any longer.

Sunny, I haven't heard how the FBCM culls are doing except for the roosters, not sure if you are there yet on which ones you are culling?

Sunny, that's great about Gitlost80's chicks. I thought none of them hatched and she's going to be a new mommy before she knows it? Please let us know how she is afterwards and if she could use any help.

Pam, how are your baby chicks doing?

Candy, I really need to get more pictures of Leroy to you. He is really coming of age now and his coloring is even more prominent than before.

I was able to take some photos of the effects from the eclipse. This is what I saw on the side of my house while the sun was shining through the tree in my front yard. This was right when the eclipse was full:

I finished planting the 3 sisters garden a few days ago. It's hard to believe I have 100 bean and 100 corn plants
in this area.

I love when the ducks see we are watering the garden and they run to the fence quacking away wanting
us to spray them:

You can see Sierra moving when ever I move the water spray. They always stay in the spray.

And you can't forget about the baby ducklings either, they really love their tub of water. This is Melody
and Princess. They are 3 weeks old now:

Missy, the ducks will do just fine as long as they are all girls. I'm having big issues with Justin chasing Mo & Harmony into the coop when ever they get out to roam the yard. As soon as Justin see's they are outside of the run he chases them right back in. Justin was so ticked with Mo & Harmony being in the pool. Justin went after them into the pool so they jumped out and ran to the other side of the yard and jumped into the pond. Well Justin jumped out of the pool so fast and into the pond where he chased them back into the run. I know he's just protecting his 2 ladies and he doesn't know Mo & Harmony are his children but seriously he needs to stop it. Everyone I've spoken to about drakes told me the drakes won't fight they will keep mating the hens over and over and over so they are the last one mating them so you need to have plenty of females if you have more than 1 drake but this isn't the case at all. I'm at a loss with this. Harmony, Sierra and Misty get along great. Sierra and Misty actually chases Justin a bit and speaks their mind to him when he chases the other 2. Sierra will go to the other side of the yard and won't respond to Justin after he chases those 2.

I have a caged area in the center of the yard, and the babies spend their day in that. They're separated by bars, so the bullies can't get to them, but maybe that will help socialize them enough for when I open the cage and let them roam free. For the most part, it's Century the cayuga who chases them. The two Swedish might both be boys, since they're not quaking yet... I'm not sure, since I'm not familiar with the breed. But the cayuga is definitely a girl, and she's mostly aggressive to the babies.

Quote: lol Hey gimme a break. I was tired last night and part of me kept wondering if it was one of those huge paper mache things they make for advertising. It was because it looks like it is forcing the water forward and I was thnking a balloon that is still full of helium (doesn't look like it's sagging) would shoot up from the force of the water wouldn't it? I know, I was overthinking the silly thing. Sometimes my brain drives me up a tree.

I'll let you know if I hear from her. She doesn't come on here much and I think I've only run into her 3 times in the last year at chicken related events in town. I sure hope she gives us an update and pics when she has the baby! (that's a hint if you're reading this C...)

OK, I know we have had a lot of drama on here lately about chicken troubles but I have more bad news. I have a couple of egg eaters on my coop! Yes it's the marans that I was trying to sort out for you all. We caught 2 of them and dispatched them but yesterday I only got 1 egg and the numbers should have been higher than that if we got all the offenders.

The last thing I wanna do is stick somebody with an egg eater so I am gonna wait until after we move and then we will build a long coop separated into breeding areas where I will place trios of birds. Then the pens I get eggs from will be safe and the ones with no eggs will tell me who has an egg eater in there. Then I will remove the roo first and if that doesn't take care of it I will separate the pullets too.

I've only had this happen once before. Years ago, when I was in my early 20s, I had a small flock in Sunnyvale. One week we noticed we were getting fewer eggs but thought it was another broody. We went to check the coop for a hidden stash of eggs but then tight in front of us an RIR hen jumps up to the nest, steals an egg and then proceeds to break it open and eat it. We dispatched her right away and the problem was solved. She was the only one doing it.

This time I have a larger flock and I have spent many hours watching them trying to catch another one with no luck so I think it will take longer to sort this one out. With chickens it seems like it's one drama after another.

Wow Sheryl those pictures are great!

Sorry to hear about your chicken troubles Sunny. I occasionally find a cracked open egg in my nest boxes but they don't seem to make a habit of it.
