Nevadans?

Walmart does carry de-wormer's. You can get a tube of Zimecterin place a very small pea size amount around bread or roll it in corn meal and see if she will eat it or place gently in the back of her throat. She should swallow it. In 10 days repeat. Wazine only kills round worms but Zimecterin will kill all worms including tape worms. Are you sure she doesn't have a sour crop? Possibly an impacted crop? How long has she been feeling this way? What color is her droppings?

LOL in my 20s I worked as warehouse supervisor for a few companies, and most of the employees under me were Mexican/Guatemalan/Salvadoran. I got so used to speaking Spanish that one day I went to pick up an order from Tacos Del Rey for my crew, and as I walked out I realized I hadn't spoken a word of English during the whole order. After that, I started working armed security at the El Rancho flea market, and the Spanish came in handy. Then my security partner told me that I spoke it like Peggy Hill on the cartoon King of the Hill, and I got really self-conscious. Since then, I haven't spoken more than a sentence of Spanish, except to speak to my husband about something we don't want the kids to understand. "Quieres helado despues iglesia?" (Want ice cream after church?) But he knows so many languages that he'll start throwing in Portuguese with his Spanish, and it cracks me up. Like I'm one to talk... I only know 1.5 languages.

Anyone else? Any big weekend plans?

You know, I know a lot of Spanish speakers that say they can't speak English for this reason, they're self conscious of the accent. I say who cares?!? It means something to make the effort to communicate regardless of your skill. I think it's more important when you DON'T speak fluently, it gives others the confidence to try and communicate back!

Cheese? I totally admire all you amazing people that make good food from scratch! You're awesome!

I plan to plant asparagus (cuz I finally got some BIG pots to put them in), my lone artichoke (finding a permanent spot is tricky around here), and all the herbs I started from seed. Oh, plus I will plant the Chaparral Sage I found at Star Nursery that I've always wanted, and a bunch of hollyhocks that haven't found a home yet. I also need to start some plants to take to Utah when we head there for the summer. They're in the middle of Sprinter. You know, when Spring and Winter kinda combine together and you never know when it's safe to plant stuff. I think that's the kind of weather you guys get up there, right?

<ahem>...the above post was my dear husband trying to get us started on this forum. Unfortunately his profile name should have read "what the typo"!

This will probably be our real profile here from this point onward. We are in Las Vegas and started on our chicken journey in March of this year. We have been avid readers of BYC for a while but only just realized there was a separate forum just for us Nevadans. We've recently been scouring the pages here looking for help with a sick chicken. We've got our fingers crossed she's going to make it and have done just about everything (short of a vet visit) to help her out. We also find ourselves with a rooster and are having quite a time trying to figure out what to do with him. It's pretty clear that not many want another roo! We're not opposed to getting rid of him in "other" ways, but have no idea how to find someone in town that has the facilties to assist with that (city ordinaces/zoning don't allow us to slaughter on our property!). Any suggestions??? I'm pretty new to forums in general so be patient with me...
Hi! Yay! Las Vegans! I'm sorry to hear about your sick chicken. I so hate it when that happens! I'm probably not much help on that score but the roo....no I can't take him but I did write a few suggestions on the Las Vegas thread. I'm in the county and have processed my own chickens in my backyard. Actually, one night, which is the only time to do the deed in the summer cause it's so darn hot, we were getting ready to "dispatch" a few roos when a ghetto bird (aka police helicopter) started cruising our neighborhood. This is not a rare occurrence by any stretch in my area but surely an inconvenience at this time as they kept sweeping our yard with the spotlight. I swear, every time we reached for the ax, here they'd come! I can only imagine what they thought...!!! Actually they probably came back just to see what we were doing with the ax in the backyard at night! Lol! Anyways, Holly31 has made some of her excess roos into capons. I think, though if yours is crowing, it's probably to late for that.

So I figured as the loving husband i would own the name!!! lol

That is so cool! I had no idea about the Zimecterin. I learn something new everyday! Thanks for sharing!

Yup, that's our crew! I really want to put it at the bottom of my page like I see so many of you have done, but I have no idea how. I tried going to my profile, but I'm not sure what to put it under. Perhaps dear hubby (aka whatthecuck...gheesh it does sound dirty!) will know how to do it. As for our poor Meg, we really don't know what's the matter. She used to be so cute and curious and come up to us when we came out. She'd give us that funny one-eyed stare that chickens are so good at. Now she mostly keeps her eyes closed and sleeps. She separated herself from the flock. She was one of our first two and the other girl stays by her side like the best of loyal friends. It's actually quite beautiful. She won't let the others pick on Meg and she lets her snuggle and keep warm since she won't hop up to roost. She has no sneezing, no mucous, no runny eyes, no breathing issues that I can see or hear. Her crop empties fine (once we realized where the crop was and how to check it). Her poo is runny and green, but she's not eating so we hear that's to be expected. It still has the white to it so I figure her kidneys are functioning ok. As hubby said we've tried sulmet and tetracycline and will be using a de-wormer today. No one else seems to have any symptoms. Maybe she ate something funky??? They pretty much just run around the yard like free spirits. I recently saw something that says to have city chickens they have to be in an enclosed pen all the time. Hmm...well, that's not really how we're set up here, so...yea. We did add ACV to their water and just added DE to their feed. Our 2 littlest chicks are about 3 weeks old. We hatched the silkie ourselves and then got the bantam to keep her company. Still not sure we made the right decision there, but we'll see. The 2 older girls (1 RIR and the Cochin?) are about 3 months old, and the 3 other RIR are about 2 1/2 months old. The pretty grey feather-footed that we're not sure about was about the same size as the older girls but her history is a bit vague so we're just assuming she's around 3 months old too. They are a fun bunch. We love to sit out and watch them. In fact we call it the "chicken channel" as it's taken over for our evening TV viewing. Our little girl can't get enough of them! Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

Well both me and the wife are native Las Vegans born and raised. My daughter is a 3rd gen native seriously why would people do this to their family!
My sister reverse migrated to Cali i tease her about that (Did you not see the cars driving the other way?).

I'm Going to see if walmart has Zimecterin and maybe give her some Pretnazone see if its a pain or inflamation thing for my poor sick meg.

Well, Sahara and I had a talk today about her cayuga. She's just too loud. She's not horrible... a dog that barks regularly is MUCH worse. But I'll step outside and be greeted with a loud "QUACK quack quack quack." I keep cornering the neighbors that live closest to us and ask, "Is the noise a problem?" They keep saying it's not... but I can hear from the tone in their voices that the duck is annoying them. The neighbors two doors down heard her, and say she's "quaint," but if they can hear her and can't hear our other chickens, then she's a little too loud. Maybe the closest neighbors aren't compaining because I looked over the fence a few weeks ago to ask about the noise, and caught the boyfriend smoking a blunt.

Anyway, we want to stop a problem before someone calls animal control. The people on my block are cool and would talk to me, but I don't know about the people across the alley, etc. A neighbor on the other side said someone called animal control on his dog, and this dog is within 10 feet of my massage office and hasn't been a problem for me.

The good thing is, Sahara is fine with it. When I mentioned that we had to do something about the problem, she said, "Can we at least wait until she has enough meat, before we kill her?" I said, "No, we'll try to find her a good home." She was very happy with that, and suggested people we could give her to. I told her that we had to make sure those people actually WANT a duck before giving them one. (Aubrey, she suggested you.) We might also have to get rid of one of her blue Swedish in the future, since neither of them are quacking and we might have two drakes. I told Sahara that she could have my harlequins... cause we all know who really owns the ducks and cares for them. It would be a symbolic ownership.

So... does anyone want a 6-wk cayuga female? This is the kind that lays the black/gray eggs. She gets along great with chickens, and isn't THAT loud... we just don't want to have someone call animal control and risk getting rid of a lot of chickens because of one duck.

i really interrupted laying yesterday with my big coop cleanout. only got 8 out of 18 layers. Usually we're in the 12-14 range. They were also upset when it was bedtime last night. the big chicks were peeved since I blocked their ability to roost on top of the divider and I blocked off the nest boxes for the night. They'll get used to it but they were quite confused at first.

I hope you can figure out how to help your chicken. I haven't had them long enough to run across that particular problem. doing some searching on the forum you may come up with something.

as for the signature for your profile, go to the my profile page and scroll way down. You'll see a spot to edit your signature. then you can type in whatever you want to appear at the bottom of all your posts.

I hope you find someone to take your cayuga. it's a bummer she's a bit loud but I completely understand. peace with the neighbors is important. I've felt much better after selling the loud welsummer. we still have some noise but no carrying on like she did.

Jeesh, is anyone else tired of these BYC formatting issues? I just typed up a whole paragraph about losing a hen today, and now that it wouldn't let me post, or even cut/paste to try to post again, I'm too cranky to type it all over again.
