I myself have ducks if you're interested. They are extremely quiet too.

Sheryl, my babies are spending their second night in the coop tonight!

They've been outside all day for two days, and are now eating beside most of the hens... except for the Wyandotte. She still insists on bullying them, but doesn't pull out chunks of fluff anymore. They're allowed within 5 feet of the big ducks, but still aren't allowed in the pond if the big ducks are already there. The cayuga still bosses them, but doesn't bully them unless they try to swim with her. After she goes to Lacey tomorrow, maybe the Swedish will adopt the babies. The cayuga pretty much runs the show, anyway.

Do you have a hatch date for your next hatch? I'd like to let my friend know so he's already with the brooder and the money.

I'm having scrolling issues and completely passed all the posts I wanted to quote. OH well. You'll all have to hear about my day.

I see there have been others with loses. I'm so sorry.

I posted in the CA thread about my litter of Lionheads. Started off with 4. 2 black and 2 white. As of this morning I only have the 2 whites left. It was my fault that the first black one died, but I have no idea why the second one did. The 2 that are left are throwing me though. They were all uniform in size, but I have one that is half the size of the other. She's obviously feeding them, so maybe the smaller one was getting pushed away with 3 of them on there???? IDK. Anyway the little one is getting fur already and the bigger one is still pretty nakie. I hope I don't lose another one and I could sure use a couple of does. Keeping my fingers crossed. I so hope they are double maned. They should be, but I just can't tell yet.


As for finding layers in Reno. You can lots of connections right here on this thread. There's always someone hatching or thinning out flocks and you have some nice birds to pick from. I'd look here even before CL or a feed store.

Ok so, lost another bunny, then lost another Silver Phoenix chick, which means I'm down to one!

I have quail hatching now. I only have 3 out and they were out when I left, except......One has the bottom shell on top of it. It looks stuck and he's walking around looking like hermet crab. Gonna check him again in a minute. Kayla and I just got back from my grand daughter's graduation party.

As for the party. I got there, walked through the living room where my oldest grand daughter was sitting with her friend. I just said hi and walked towards the family room/kitchen and then asked where my sister was, because I haven't seen her since???????? Before Christmas and not sure how much before. The friend with my grand daughter WAS my sister. That's pretty bad when you don't recognize your own little sister! So I got teased a lot about that one. But she brought me a surprise. Lettuce plants! My lettuce has done nothing, so I was happy to see this. Forgot to ask her what type it was though. DUH! She said maybe I'd get enough to feed some to the birds and rabbits.

Sunny I have at least 5 ice cream freezers. How big of a party are you guys talkin??? LOL

I am fairley new to BYC and found this thread for Nevadans. I am in Reno, NV in the Hidden Valley area. I have 3 chickens, all about 5 weeks old. I use BYC as a reference for every question I have. Any suggestions for raising chickens here in Reno?

Hahaha! IDK if we can even talk Mark and Aubrey into it! Here I am picturing a rockin band, a dance floor, tons of great food, at least 3 different flavors of homemade ice cream and apparently body paints(?) and we don't even have the go ahead from the happy couple! At this stage it's just a pleasant fantasy.

So sorry to hear about the little bunnies!!!

I sure hope the 2 that are left make it and have the big fluffy manes you want !

Speaking of bunnies... question for Tyler or Seth here... or anyone else that might know.
We just butchered the two extra bucks a few nights ago. Now we have the doe in one cage, and the remaining buck in the other. I'm interested in getting a second doe so I can alternate breeding when they're old enough, but the 3rd (empty) cage has the nesting box in it. My husband said something like, "Maybe we'll get another doe and buck to keep them company." I don't know about the buck... he'd just be butchered anyway. If we were going to do that, we might as well have just butchered one buck. But if we get a second doe, will they just fight if I house them together?

That's so tragic.... But look upon every bad mistake as a teachable moment. When you know better, you do better....and I bet that particular accident will never ever happen again at your coop. But -- dang! -- there's nothing flatter than a dead chick. So sorry for your loss.

Today I decided on an adventure and went someplace I had never been before in LV....The International Market. I didn't know if it would be like a CostPlus or what.... It turned out to carry all sorts of food goods from all over the world, canned, fresh, frozen and dried. Half the fun was trying to figure out what the stuff was. And, yes, TONS of those duck eggs (the black embryonic ones). Picked up some exotic sea salts, dried mushrooms (waaaay cheaper than the ones sold in the regular stores), some capers, baby bok choy, shallots, sesame oil, tea, pasta, buckwheat noodles and miso....now just need it to cool down for eating soup!

We've had a roasting heatwave down here the past few days... 107 yesterday, 105 today. Supposedly cooling to 90 by Wednesday. GREAT ice cream weather down here! You guys are inspiring me....well, at least making me hungry. I wonder what's in the freezer?

That is great Missy! I haven't added my baby ducks in with the others because they are taking care of Bridgette. She turns 8 weeks old on Monday and there is no way she can go in with the others even though no one seems to notice these 3 are even around. We had them on the other side of the yard for only a day because I couldn't stand them being over there and not being able to see them to make sure everything was okay. We have them in their own area where everyone can see each other. Once everyone goes to bed we take the babies into the enclosure so they can get use to the surroundings and the ducks go swimming in the pool we bought this year. The pond is still being used but the pool is so much better.

The next batch of ducklings are due to hatch on Monday, June 18th and the eggs Sierra is sitting on are due that Thursday, June 21st.

Hoping for a better sexing this time at birth. I ended up with a boy and a girl. The boy must go, there is no way I can have 3 drakes. I know these ducks are dual and I also I know I can't think about it either. We shall see with Mel on what we will do with him.

I LOVE the international markets! There are certain things we buy there that are now staples in our pantry. I go there for my seaweed, rice and tapioca noodles, basil, eggplant, green tea, coconut milk, and fish sauce. I haven't bought duck eggs there, because I'm too afraid they'll turn out to be balut. But maybe tomorrow I'll run by and buy a goose egg for Sahara's birthday. She's an awesome kid... a goose egg for her birthday would be a total delight.

We have other little niche markets that I've been meaning to visit but haven't yet. There's only one Middle-Eastern store here, and it's cleverly disgused not to say "Middle-Eastern" on the storefront or the advertising. (The Middle-Eastern restaurant here goes by "Mediterranean," and the mosque only has the initials "NNMC" on it. Too much hate.) There's also an Indian spice shop that I want to visit. I buy my Indian spices at the co-op, but they might be cheaper there.

Lol on the roadstand market! I've already had quite a few friends say, "If you have extra produce, we'll eat it." I just smile. Mostly because, every year, I have people who ask for food from my garden, while we still haven't managed to make ends meet. And it seems like the only people who ask for food are the ones who have no problem affording it themselves. Those who really need the food don't ask for ours. We do have one amazing family that is first on the list of "Oh crud, this is going to go bad, better give it away." They're wonderful people, and we'd support them entirely out of our garden if we could. Most of the planting, this year, revolved around preservability. Hopefully we'll have an amazing growing season and I'll exhaust myself canning and freezing, and we'll have tons of food for the winter.

Speaking of preserving food, I have a circle of friends that help each other preserve food. Canning, freezing, dehydrating. And in trade for the help, we share the food around. I have a friend with a super-duper grain mill, but she isn't growing corn. So she wants to grind my corn in trade for some of it. If anyone is interested in something like this, let me know.

Hmmmm I'd offer to take a drake, but I think both of the Swedish are drakes, and they're doing very well over here. And though the babies will be an unshowable hodgepodge, I can let the Swedish and harlequins breed without worrying about crossing the genes too much.
