Speaking of bunnies... question for Tyler or Seth here... or anyone else that might know.
We just butchered the two extra bucks a few nights ago.  Now we have the doe in one cage, and the remaining buck in the other.  I'm interested in getting a second doe so I can alternate breeding when they're old enough, but the 3rd (empty) cage has the nesting box in it.  My husband said something like, "Maybe we'll get another doe and buck to keep them company."  I don't know about the buck... he'd just be butchered anyway.  If we were going to do that, we might as well have just butchered one buck.  But if we get a second doe, will they just fight if I house them together?

I never house rabbits together. I had a sister pair together for almost 9 months it was not hood. They were always pulling each others hair and were more aggressive towards me. After I seperated them it was much better. No more trying to kill me plus most does are possive of their space.

Don't feel bad Sunny. I was giving you a hard time..

That's so tragic.... But look upon every bad mistake as a teachable moment. When you know better, you do better....and I bet that particular accident will never ever happen again at your coop. But -- dang! -- there's nothing flatter than a dead chick. So sorry for your loss.

Today I decided on an adventure and went someplace I had never been before in LV....The International Market. I didn't know if it would be like a CostPlus or what.... It turned out to carry all sorts of food goods from all over the world, canned, fresh, frozen and dried. Half the fun was trying to figure out what the stuff was. And, yes, TONS of those duck eggs (the black embryonic ones). Picked up some exotic sea salts, dried mushrooms (waaaay cheaper than the ones sold in the regular stores), some capers, baby bok choy, shallots, sesame oil, tea, pasta, buckwheat noodles and miso....now just need it to cool down for eating soup!

We've had a roasting heatwave down here the past few days... 107 yesterday, 105 today. Supposedly cooling to 90 by Wednesday. GREAT ice cream weather down here! You guys are inspiring me....well, at least making me hungry. I wonder what's in the freezer?

Sounds very interesting! I guess I need to explore Reno for some of the unique flavors I used to enjoy in the Bay Area. Missy I may need your help on that one! About the only unique stores I know about here are TJs and WholeFoods and I wasn't impressed with either one!

Yeah Missy, I completely agree with the inbreeding thing. I wouldn't go any further than what I have done. I'm not hatching any of Harmony's eggs because of them being just too closely related. It's okay to do it for just one generation but I don't think it would be a good idea to mate Mel with any of the harlequin's. He is nice though but of course all of the WH's are so calm and nice.

Okay, so with this intense searching for the correct feed, I got it figured out. My 1 YO chickens are molting but their feather picking for almost a year was pretty bad in itself. I couldn't figure it out. I had it correct except for the amino acids. I'm trying to find a feed for everyone with the proper amounts of the amino acids and not be expensive. I've been buying Purina Flock Raiser for almost a year now. The protein was their but the amino acids are not. I've been supplementing the greens and I know they can use cooked egg whites too so I'll be adding that as well until I can find a feed that's in the $14 range instead of the almost $20 per bag I've been paying. According to the Purina website their Flock Raiser is going up to $21.20 for a 50lb bag now. Can anyone help me with this? I'm looking for at least a 18% protein with close to a 1% Lysine and as close to .40% Methionine.

Soooooo hot here! I've had ice cream for the past few days! Lol! I don't know if I could survive the summer without popsicles.

I saw how hot you guys were down there and I felt so sorry for all of you and your birds. We hit 97 on Friday and it was all I could do to keep the flock cool. I kept the hose going with the mist and the sprayer for several hours to make sure the chickens were walking on wet dirt to keep them cool.

I also had a pair of sisters that didn't look anything like Lionheads after a while and one even gashed the other right by her eye. They had never been separated when I got them and they were older, so I kept them together till the gash happened. I think once I move I'm going to buy some of those huge Chincillas and raise them for meat and fur. I thought about some of the big whites, but I love the chinchilla color. I may change my mond after a while though with only gray pelts.

Last year we found corn on the cob for 9 ears for $1. We bought 2 full boxes, then set them in my shower for a day until we were ready to process, since they were packed in ice. Then we had a husking/blanching/cutting/bagging line, and the whole family was involved. Even our adopted son (who is 25 years old.) I had towels spread everywhere, so when it was all done, I just rolled up the towels and shook them out over the chickens. I think we just used up the last of that corn, and it was just as sweet as late June, when we bought it.

It's so fun getting 2 or 3 people together to do it. The way my grandmother did! Next thing you know, the work is all done, and everyone had a blast.
