Nevadans?

Now I know I was very tired last night. My ducks name is Misty and not Missy! Sorry Missy.

Oh Lacy, I hope your day gets better. We don't mean to upset anyone on here.

Sorry to hear about your RIR. We had RIR over 20 years ago and we loved them. We had a breeding trio.

Missy, take your male flowers and pick them when they are fully bloomed. Rub them on the female flowers. Bring them inside the house and remove the center piece where the pollen is, place them in a plastic bag and put them in the fridge. Once you collect a lot of them after a few days then coat them in flour and then in egg mixture and fry. Italians love them. We eat the flowers with fried zucchini or alone. You can also stuff them with a meat loaf mixture and do the same thing, dip and fry. In Italy we call it eating a mouse If you leave the stem on the stuffed ones because they sorta look like mice. The boys always loved it too. They always wanted to know when I would cook more mice for them.

I just joined, and live in Palomino Valley. While we do not have chickens anymore, I am interested in most issues of self reliance and independence.
welcome!

I only have so much space. Can't wait for the pics. We need a poultry swap out here in Fernley. It's hard for me to leave Fernley because it seems I'm always on call at McDonalds. I'm not a manager (if I was offered I'd turn it down) but I'm the first called almost every time.
they know a good, reliable employee when they see one!

I'm now picking zucchini and my garlic is starting to dry out at the tops and leaning over. The garlic will be ready in about 6 weeks from now by the way it's looking. Then I'll pick it and dry it Collect the outside cloves for fall planting and store the rest for using.
I'm glad Misty is okay. i can't believe you have zucchini ready to pick. My sugar pumpkins and spaghetti squash are doing pretty well but I did start them much earlier than the summer squash.
We are having a yard sale on Saturday to get a little extra cash for my husband's next business trip. For the Philippines trip, they pre-paid him travel money... this time, they only reimburse. We don't have a big pot of travel money in the account. Yesterday, I walked through the house making a list of what we could sell. And I realized that, even if we had never had this bronchitis thing, I couldn't put the chickens on the list. I couldn't pick any that I would sell to make a little bit of money. I can get rid of my martial arts stuff and cooking stuff, but I'm only getting rid of these chickens as a very last resort.
Glad your duck ended up being okay, too. good luck with your garage sale. i've been collecting stuff for awhile. eventually we'll have one. I'm waiting to get reimbursed for my Chicago trip. That's a big chunk of change. I wish it were prepaid as well. Used to be easier to get a travel advance at UNR but they usually don't give them any more.
Wow I'm glad to hear of everyone's rescues!

I found one of my RIR hens dead in the coop this morning when I went to collect eggs. No idea what happened to her. Yesterday she was fine and this morning... That's the second RIR I've lost - the first one I'm sure was egg bound.
sorry about your hen.

Thank you for the welcomes!

Also, I have built a small swamp cooler for under $50 with common materials that works very well for personal use - in case anyone is interested in the info on it. This is just the (very) rough POC for it, and the finished version would be fully enclosed and nicely finished. Everything, except for the basin, is from Home Depot. This is not for sale, but I will happily give you info on what to buy in order to build it for yourself.

I didn't think you had a duck named Missy, but I wasn't sure, since you have more now. I know you have Misty and Sierra (not Missy and Sahara). Lol!

A $50 swamp cooler? Wow, that's an idea that can catch on fast.

These pictures are brought to you by proud parenting. We capture these moments when we can, for we know they are precious and few.

This is hard-packed sand from a driveway. A good 50 swings had me ready to throw up, but Joe did probably 75% of it himself. Sahara helped with the last 25 feet.

Welcome Gadsden. You found a lot of really nice people here on this thread. They're even nice to me. LOL

OK, so where are the step by steps for this swamp cooler and ummmmmmm whatcha got for solar??? hehe

whoa that swamp cooler is hecka cool. GET IT? SEE WHAT I DID THERE??!!

Ron, sorry about your hen! That stinks soooo bad! grrr!

Missy holy canoli! I cant even fathom hard labor in this heat. YUCK. what are yall doin up there? looks, erm....fun...

Kim, how could we not be nice to you? we LUUUURVE you!

Careful what you ask for Kim. I've known Chris and his wife for about 3 years now and they know what they are doing! They are living almost completely off the grid. Chris bought his acreage several years ago and built his house himself, his wife helped too. It's a fantastic house too. They are great people to get to know.
