Nevadans?

Lacy Blues, I've thought of that. And my friend is fine with me letting a few chickens run around his property. I'm worried about their safety, though. It's in a 3-foot chain link fence, with a busy street beside it, a convenience store in front of it, and a dog in the yard behind it. If it was my own yard, I could go out regularly and check on them, but it's a block from my house and my friend rarely goes out in his own yard.

Elizabeth, the best thing to do for winter squash is wait until the vine dries up. If you lift the fruit and it breaks easily off the vine, then it's ready. If you have to cut it off, then it's not all the way ripe. But if you do have to harvest it early, you can ripen it in a sunny window. And if the top is yellow but the underside is still green, then it has awhile to go yet. It seems like a really long wait (and it is) but cutting into a green fruit and tossing it is no fun!

tolipgirl, they still have buff laced pullets, so that's good for me! And BTW... anyone who wants to share your order should also be willing to pay their share of the shipping. Just saying.

Hmmm, well maybe if more people order, I will get them on Meyer.

Just wanted to mention that I have Polish. I haven't shipped chicks before but plan on learning. This is my first year breeding them so I haven't sold chicks, just hatching eggs. Sunny has some of mine although I haven't seen them since they were born, I have hatched some beautiful birds. 7 that hatched in the last two days and are still going! I could try to send what I think are pullets but can't guarantee it so you may want to do the hatchery if they'll guarantee it.

I am looking for Penedesenca chicks in Northern CA. I want a dark egg layer and I've heard good things about this breed. I'd like to give them to one of my broodies to raise. I know Sunny got some, I think in CA. Anyone hear from her? She's OK right? If anyone talks to her could you ask her for the contact for me?

I saw her a few days ago. She's just busy, and having a hard time with internet connection. Delilah is due to whelp any day now! I'll text her to get in contact with you, or she might just be able to log onto the site long enough.

Re: Penedesenca chickens... I'm curious to see what's going to show up at the poultry show here in November. Probably some nice variety. But I'm also very wary of going there and bringing a disease home to my flock. Any opinions on this? My yard isn't a good place to have a quarantine area.

Today is so nice and overcast, and HUMID! So humid that Sahara and I are going to make 10lbs of blueberries into jam. Because that's what you do on a humid summer day, right? Run a water bath canner for hours?

Joe is over playing chicken-herd. I have 3 chickens over in Garden #2, and he has to watch to be sure they're all safe. He was a jerk over at his dad's house, so he's stuck watching chickens for 2 hours. I haven't put the chemical insecticides on yet, but the DE from yesterday seems to be helping a little. Or they're hiding because it's overcast. I don't know.

how far away are you from Reno? some time in the future, I maybe would make a chick run.
I hadn't heard where Sunny got her penedesenca. I know Mandy, (VCFeathers) in Virginia City was interested in those but I'm not sure if she got some. I seem to remember her and sunny chatting about someone in Nevada with penedesencas but I could be off on the location.

there was not a big selection of chickens for sale at the poultry show last November, if I recall. there seemed to be quite a lot of ducks for sale, though. But it could be different this year. I haven't thought of a good way to quarantine grown birds at my place either so that's why I've only gotten chicks so far.

enjoy your steam bath! i'm sure the jam will be worth it, though.

Sunny is out of town, thats why she isnt on... But Delilah had her puppies today! (they are out at genny's)
saw the photos on facebook. so cute! that was fast. how long has sunny been keeping this secret? I have no idea what the puppy gestation period is.

Quote: I'm about 3 hours from Reno.

Sunny contacted me. She told me about the puppies and I agree, she kept the secret for a long time! Gestation is about 64 days!!!!

She said her Pene's just laid an egg but she wasn't happy with the color of the one egg and is hoping it will improve but she didn't give me the contact so I don't know if she just forgot or if she didn't recommend the source.

Missy, I'm making Zucchini bread again and trying to convince myself to put up the tomatoes but we have a/c so I have no excuse!

Oh, I almost forgot....up to 9 Polish now and they're still hatching!

My poor EE has nothing but rotten eggs so far.....poor girl. I can't decide if I should take all her eggs and give her some Polish or if she still may have a chance of a chick.

The risk doesn't seem worth it to me, after our little ordeal this spring. Except for olive eggers, I can get pretty much everything else I want through the hatcheries or friends.

And the canning WAS a steambath! I have a good friend who likes to come help me can so she can learn (and she got suckered into 25 hours of grape jelly last year because of it) who got sick at the end of this session. It looked like a cross between heat exhaustion and an allergic reaction, but she started feeling better about the time her husband came to get her. It's weird. I had just given her a taste of the jam about 5 minutes before, but she had started taking some new vitamins that morning, as well. But when I opened the door to get some air, it was cooler outside than inside. Even with 3 fans blowing on us!

But we did 4.5 dozen jars of jam. Yum!

Most of my tomatoes have been chopped and put in the freezer. I haven't wanted to stockpile for a week to get enough to can, and I can just throw the frozen ones in soup. If I have eggplant coming out at the same time, I'll make a bag of chopped tomatoes/eggplant/onions to put in marinara, or a bag of "chili veggies" if peppers are ready at that time. It's a lot easier than canning, though I know I really should do some canned tomatoes so it's not all consolidated into the freezer. If the freezer breaks or we lose power, we could lose a lot of food. I think I'll dry some in the dehydrator, too.

Today's jam episode was pretty spontaneous, brought on by a tremendous sale of 2lbs/$4.97. And my family is really enjoying fresh jams and syrups over homemade yogurt.

I have no more broodies so far. (Hope I didn't just jinx myself.) Sour is taking good care of her babies, and we're getting about 6 eggs a day now. Looking forward to the September/October flood before the older hens slow down for the winter! Your Polish are adorable!

We got 16 eggs today. I think about 4 ameraucana pullets are laying plus the gc marans has been going for awhile. Her eggs are regular size now. I have one broody.

Very adorable polish chicks!

that's a lot of jam! sounds very good. my kids wanted to bake cookies today and since it isn't too hot today, I said we could. Maybe we can convince Sunny to start breeding olive eggers.

I really need a few of those at some point. Going for color in the egg basket! I love it!
