Nevadans?

We got 16 eggs today. I think about 4 ameraucana pullets are laying plus the gc marans has been going for awhile. Her eggs are regular size now. I have one broody.
Quote: The eggs Sunny got from me were from my EE roo and EE hens. I think she hatched some from blue and green eggs so if she kept a good roo to breed to her Marans she should get some OE.

Here's another picture I took of, what I think will be a really nice grown-up.

it's a girl! I don't have a WCB hen and with three WCB roos you think I would have got one by now! Sorry it's blurry, took it from my iPhone and didn't want to drop it!

Elizabeth, congrats on the eggs, and congrats on the broody? Or no?

Ok, I always thought OE was Old English. But I don't think you get old english by crossing marans and easter eggers!

Just wanted to mention that I have Polish. I haven't shipped chicks before but plan on learning. This is my first year breeding them so I haven't sold chicks, just hatching eggs. Sunny has some of mine although I haven't seen them since they were born, I have hatched some beautiful birds. 7 that hatched in the last two days and are still going! I could try to send what I think are pullets but can't guarantee it so you may want to do the hatchery if they'll guarantee it.

I am looking for Penedesenca chicks in Northern CA. I want a dark egg layer and I've heard good things about this breed. I'd like to give them to one of my broodies to raise. I know Sunny got some, I think in CA. Anyone hear from her? She's OK right? If anyone talks to her could you ask her for the contact for me?

how far away are you from Reno? some time in the future, I maybe would make a chick run.
I hadn't heard where Sunny got her penedesenca. I know Mandy, (VCFeathers) in Virginia City was interested in those but I'm not sure if she got some. I seem to remember her and sunny chatting about someone in Nevada with penedesencas but I could be off on the location.
there was not a big selection of chickens for sale at the poultry show last November, if I recall. there seemed to be quite a lot of ducks for sale, though. But it could be different this year. I haven't thought of a good way to quarantine grown birds at my place either so that's why I've only gotten chicks so far.

enjoy your steam bath! i'm sure the jam will be worth it, though.

saw the photos on facebook. so cute! that was fast. how long has sunny been keeping this secret? I have no idea what the puppy gestation period is.

I was indeed looking into the Penedesenca breed. I haven't bought any yet. There's a woman named Jerry in Stagecoach that raises them along with wallabies and babydoll sheep. Her website is http://beeskepranch.com/ The Penedesenca aren't listed but she is a member of Julie's poultry club, and I've seen her and her birds at the swaps.

I have a color genetics question for y'all. Normally i could figure this out on my own but this particular instance has me completely stumped.

So initially i assumed that Mr. Pants was a recessive white bird and that i would be able to tell who all of the mothers of his chicks were based on their colors. Basically the chicks would just turn out the same color as their mamas. Well since all of his chicks are white obviously the sultan carries the DOMINANT white gene (duh aubrey! sheesh!). Bedbug was easy because she came from my only green egg. Chompy was easy because her skin is black, obviously a half silkie. However Banana has me stumped. My bantam birds are showgirls, silkies, polish, and cochins. Banana came from a brown speckled bantam egg and the only breed of bantam I have that lays a brown egg are the cochins.

I have a red, a white, and a silver laced cochin bantam. I figured ill just never know who mom is. Could be any of the three. Dominant white i believe doesnt allow for leakage (i dont think). Then why the heck is banana turning splash?
Yeah shes getting in little black flecks here and there. Im pretty sure splash can only come from b/b/s birds?

Some spots coming in at the tail

Some coming in on the wings

there are more spots on the wings and chest. Its very peculiar to me. I suppose it could be leakage and since it is black it would mean it had to come from the silverlaced right? And if it is leakage then I wonder if it would still be called splash? couldnt be though, it needs the blue and black genes for that?

I know this is probably really uninteresting to you guys but i am really racking my brain trying to figure out how black is coming through a dominant white. Or suppose its just some fluke in the juvenile feathering (like how marans get white feathers sometimes before their adult feathers come in...but those feathers are ALL white, not spotty?) and the bird could just feather in all white... haha, omg i need a life.

Look! My eggies!!

Glad you asked! With all these Polish hatching I'm trying to figure out how I got all the colors I'm getting! My white polish all have those random black feathers but not a ton of them. I thought they were still splash.

I'm up to 13 I think! The newest one looks really cool. I'm searching to see what color it might be. It looks grey with dark freckles all over so maybe it's a real splash? Then I have reddish with striping on the back and one that I believe is chocolate and another that looks like a White crested Chocolate and another White Crested Blue! Very colorful hatch!
