Nevadans?

Hi guys,  working on boards on hinges for the windows of the coop.  grumpy neighbor is back in his yard moving rocks around or something. my girls are being very quiet, bless their hearts.  Gunda laid and did the egg song.  I threw some pumpkin muffin pieces in there and she quieted down quickly.  (don't worry. I don't usually feed them baked goods. special occasion only)  This neighbor has been relatively friendly  in the past.  So he's not in the worst category of neighbor. he just happens to be home all day which is unfortunate.

Pam, I hope your little marans chick will be okay.

Mandy, hope you continue to improve.

sheryl, lol on bringing leroy over here. I have had my share of roos over here but didn't keep them very long once they started.  the BLRW are not loud that I've noticed yet.  I really hope I don't have to get rid of those 2. they are so pretty.  but if I do, I will let you know.   Yes, I'd like to also know how you know if they have worms.  I am planning to deworm my 1 year olds this fall anyway.

peep_show, he did not mention flies to my husband.  He just mentioned noise. We do have our share of flies but I think egg song noise is his main issue.

ok back to work. i feel i have to tiptoe around my own yard, though.

Ok I just got my peeps, are they really noisy when they lay?. I got 2-Delawares, 2-Welsummers, 2-Easter Eggers, and 2-red stars. Just curious.

Ron, great looking corn there! Just like Missy said about the blanching but I never thought of putting butter on it first but a lot of times I just eat plain corn but the butter first sounds like a great idea. I use the food saver all of the time as well. I go through tons of boxes the rolls come in.

About worms in chickens. Martha's been going through one of the longest molts I've ever seen. See just isn't getting her feathers. Patty was the same way. 2 weeks ago I went ahead and de-wormed Patty just to see and now she has all of her feathers back in and she's laying again. Yesterday Martha kept going in and out of the coop trying to lay an egg. She was in there for hours. I checked on her and asked her why she was still in there? She stood up and there was a very soft shelled egg and it was hers because of the spots. I picked her up and checked her area and this little tape worm came a crawling out of her. It was just like a grain of rice and flat. Last year my chickens had tape worms and it was confirmed after my vet checked the droppings and then my dog Mille got them too. Last year the chickens got the worms once I started seeing stable flies and the stable flies are what I'm having issues with right now. John has sprayed the whole yard yesterday and every inch of the house and coop with this great spray I have. It works really great but when the flies are at their worst the spray doesn't last very long. It uses the chrysanthemum oil. The oil is in ultra micro beads and when a fly lands on it the bead attaches to the fly and it work it's way into the fly and kills it. It's expensive but worth it. I'm going to order the largest bottle I can so next year if anyone wants us to come spray your yard we will be do it for you.

Missy, John's going to try to get it done Monday and spray the run again afterwards. My days off have changed for the time being. I'm having Sunday's and Monday's off except tomorrow. Someone wanted the day off so I'm working for her. I still have a huge favor to ask you so I'll call you this week.

Ok, my chicken peeps. I have a crisis threatening my hobby. Jose was talking to the neighbor behind us today when there was a power outage and the neighbor mentioned that he and another neighbor behind are annoyed at the chicken noise but he wanted to talk to us first before taking it further. ( I always had a feeling that neighbor would be the one. He's retired and home all day, every day).

So I guess I will be reducing my flock and trying to keep the quietest ones. Also I will put in the plywood over the two big windows in the back--on hinges so I can open if needed. And think of other ways to reduce noise. Any ideas are much appreciated.

I have to do some research and see who are the quietest ones when they lay. I am very sad. Also, if anyone on here or you know of anyone looking to add to their flock, I will have some available shortly. The oldest are 1 year old and the rest are laying or point of lay. What are your quietest breeds? I know there is individual variation as well but it's good to know if someone has found some particular breeds to be quieter.

Well, I know there will be at least one welsummer in the bunch. love the eggs but they can be loud. my orpingtons are sometimes noisy. one is noisier than the other but i love them! One australorp can be noisy. My barred rock Gunda is loud but not all day. I don't really like my SLWs. I mean, I think the breed is pretty but I mine aren't so awesome in personality and they are kind of honky sounding like a goose. I will have to pay more attention to see who the worst offenders are. Maybe we'll go to church on saturday night so I can hang out and observe on sunday! Not really what I planned to do this weekend. Maybe I can set up a video camera

Missy are your ameraucanas loud? I haven't noticed mine being loud (hopefully that's true!).

I'm thinking about cheap ways to insulate. Maybe getting some insulation for the walls and covering it with tarps so the chickens don't eat it? It's expensive to put wood up again to cover the insulation.

well, my silkies are really quiet but of course they haven't started laying yet! OH, what a pain! I am sick about it. I guess that answers the question if I have too many chickens. Now this has really put a damper on my enjoyment of the chickens. boo hoo. I just want to gather up my chickens and run away to red rock! Ok, this pity party has to hit the road and grocery shop. Life must go on.
Oh I remember how awful this feeling is!!! I am soooooo sorry you are having to deal with such fussy neighbors Elizabeth! I sure hope they back off once the sound muffling measures are finished. I hope them coming to you first is a very good sign!
Ok, reading in the Washoe County animal regulations, this is what I found pertaining to chicken ownership within the city:

55.110 Keeping of animals in sanitary conditions. No person
shall keep any animal unless its area is kept clean and free
from offensive odors and animal wastes.
[§13, Ord. No. 1207]

55.120 Nuisance. It is unlawful for the owner or person
having the care, custody or control of any animal to permit,
either willfully or through failure to exercise due care or
control, any such animal to commit any nuisance, as defined
herein, upon any public property or any other property under
the control of or in possession of any other person
, whether or
not open to the public.
[§14, Ord. No. 1207; A Ord. No. 1269]-17-

55.125 Keeping of noisy animals. Except as provided in NRS
40.140, it is unlawful for any person to keep, harbor or own
any animal which by making loud and frequent noises causes
annoyance to the neighborhood or to any persons in the
vicinity.
[§15, Ord. No. 1207; A Ord. No. 1269]
(Is this determined at the discretion of Animal Control? They've got to admit that some people are just crotchety.)

55.800 Penalties.

(7) Notice of civil penalty. Whenever any animal is found in violation of the animal
ordinances which are set forth in WCC 55.010 through 55.800, a NCP may be issued. In lieu of
issuing a NCP, a written warning may be served upon the owner of the animal by affixing the
warning to the place of residence in a conspicuous place. The written warning shall be imprinted
so as to advise the owner that the owner has violated the animal control ordinances, which
animal control ordinances the owner violated, but that it carries no civil or criminal penalty.

(8) - talks about being served a notice of civil penalty, which has to contain some very specific information about the violation.
First offense = $100 fine, second is $200 fine, third is $300 fine... stuff like that.

(9) Issuance. The notice of civil penalty may be issued by any peace officer or animal
control officer. The NCP may be issued by the peace officer or animal control officer based upon
a written and signed statement of a complaining party. In such a case, the complaining party
must appear at a hearing subsequently scheduled pursuant to WCC 55.800(13) (d) below, to
testify. If the complaining party does not appear at the hearing in the case, the NCP will be
dismissed and the respondent released from liability.

But it would be really nice to find some polite and well-meaning city official that's willing to talk about tolerances and procedures for keeping poultry in Reno. We can't be the first people to be concerned about this.
I linked these (plus the conditions all fowl keepers must abide by) on the BYC city by city ordinances thread. Unfortunately when I tried to call the city to get clarification on a couple of points I found that they had no idea what there own municiple codes say! They argued with me about what the real rules were. Once I got to a supervisor I finally started to get some real answers though. Reno has tried very hard to keep it legal for folks to keep small livestock in their yards but yes, if it bothers a neighbor then you can be forced to sell your flock.

You can ignore all the notices and force a hearing and at that point it may turn in your favor depending on the judge. Since you have been diligent about rehoming roos and you are taking steps to help with noise abatement you would have a strong case I would think.
It looks like you were reading the same thing as me! But it also looks like, if he wants to make an issue of it past a warning, he has to be willing to testify in court of the problem. Do you think he would do that? Would you want to take it that far? It would be so nice if he worked a standard workday like most people, so he was out of the house during egg time. Mine only lay during 9-5 working hours, and anyone home at that time is usually running a belt sander or circular saw.

I also wonder if Animal Control officers ever come out to assess the situation and determine that the complaining party just needs to take a deep breath and relax.
They unfortunately usually side with the complainant when it comes to "livestock" issues. Though each person has their own ways of dealing with these things. Yes chickens are legal in Reno with very few conditions but the law is also clear that if a neighbor objects to them due to smell or noice etc then they can force you to "remedy" the situation. A hearing would be a better way to go once a complaint reaches that level.
Thanks everyone for the kind words of advice. I am well aware of the benefits of yogurt, which is why I feed it to my family regularly. However along with guava it's one of only two foods I'm allergic to. It causes my mouth to break out in sores instantly. So I'll be starting probiotics as soon as my prescription is out, but for now I'll just spend my days sleeping and feeling awful. Sigh.

On a much more entertaining note... one of my guineas has decided to go broody! shes been sitting on a pile of eggs for a week straight now, and she is a nasty aggressive thing. Which is good around here. The funny thing is half the eggs shes sitting are chicken eggs, she just decided to steal the pile one night. Luckily all my other girls just picked another horse stall to lay in. We collect eggs every day and all the eggs I've cracked lately are fertile according to the nifty little yolk ring trick. I suppose that's not really a surprise with twelve roos though lol. I'll keep everyone updated and post pics should anything exciting happen.
Oh Mandy! I feel for ya!!! How awful you must feel! I sure hope you find a way to kick that nasty infection soon.

Congrats on your dedicated broody! Can't wait to see pics of the new chicks once they hatch.

Oh man that stinks and is bringing back memories of that horrible neighbor of mine when we lived in town. It is very upsetting to realize you don't get to just relax and enjoy your life!
As far as being underwater with your mortgage, there are a lot of different options available these days for homeowners in your situation. You should definitely explore your options at any rate. Steve and I had to make the tough decision when we let our old house go. We would not have seen a profit on that for decades and financially keeping it meant financial ruin for us. It's a really tough place to be in but I don't believe there are no solutions to the problem.
If the flies do turn out to be part of the problem then I would go get some fly traps from Greens Feed. They don't smell great but boy do they lure flies in! My fly problem was cut by 95%. Great little bags of putrid liquid! :)

Elizabeth I'm so sorry about your neighbor troubles. I would stack straw bales on the side of the coop that faces his yard and see if that doesn't do the trick. It's cheap enough and if it doesn't work you can continue on the course you are now.

Harvested most of my corn today.

Question for my fellow gardeners. If I want to freeze some of this, do I need to blanch it first? I have a Food Saver vacuum sealer so I was going to just do that, but then I thought I'd better check the collective wisdom bank first.
Nope you don't have to blanch first. I just leave the trimmed husks on but here's a site that describes 2 ways to do it. You need the husks either way. http://www.ehow.com/how_5429586_freeze-corn-cob-blanching.html

Really depends on the individual chicken and their place in the pecking order. I had a wonderful bird that was quiet and dignified and never caused any trouble. When I had to give her up, the new owner started telling me about all kinds of agressive, loud behavior from this sweet gentle girl.

So it's very hard to predict something like this.

OK for you that asked, the Alzheimers walk is on the 29th at the Sparks Marina. Walkers will receive a free breakfast and t-shirts are also available. Most folks will be getting there around 8am to sign in and eat breakfast beore the walk begins. Steve will be speaking for 5 minutes. He's gonna do great I can tell already. :) For more info you can go to... http://act.alz.org/site/PageServer?pagename=walk_about

I will be doing the walk in my chair since this back won't make even that short walk (once around the marina) but at least I'll be there!

Hey All! Go to the first post of this thread and click on the member page link. Ron has a map up now that's linked there and it will work for the whole state! :D So get your favorite places to shop for feed and supplies and get their info to Ron asap. Don't forget... Name, address and ph number!
We also need a breeder's page and an event page! So any breeders out there get your info to me!

Thanks all!!!

Elizabeth, do you think he's the kind of guy that will see all the hard work you're doing to accommodate him and decide to drop the issue since you're really trying to be a good neighbor?

Then again you could always send over a dozen eggs with an apology note from "the girls next door" for the noise because they couldn't contain their excitement and they're working on becoming a quiet and orderly bunch.... A little humor, a little humbleness and a gift goodie can go a long way to show you're being a good neighbor.

Now if only i knew what to do with my massive and what seems useless harvest of crabapples of different varieties what are they good for?

Wow Dee that sounds like a great idea!

No idea what to do with crabapples Seth but hey - congratulations on your new egg! I predict that you will be swimming in eggs in a couple of weeks.

Won't your chickens eat the crabapples?
They do it just takes forever for them to eat it
