OK first I've seen the bodies of 2 dogs killed by a large coon. One was a 100+ pound Dobie and the other a Pitt. They bites and circumferance of them showed raccoon, so althought there are dogs that can hunt them down, not ever dog wins. I've also seen some really torn up Coonhounds. Just sayin!
When we did urine collections on Mountain Lions, there were things we learned. First, make sure it isn't shy. Second, don't use female urine. It attracts others, so same if you're going to use a wolf. It's hard when you have to deal with a leg lifter, but there are a couple of ways. Keep in mind it's been 3 decades since I helped with them, but one of the ideas was mine and it's like to gloat a little. LOL
One of the ways to collect was to use a plastic basin or a dish tub. We had to wait to see if they were going to spray and the tub was shoved under with a pole, or if they used one area more than the other, the tub was left on the outside of the enclosure and it was hit or miss.
We had a long wait one time and then I was at home one night helping my stepdad paint a room. LIGHTBULB! Next day I grabbed a drop cloth and toted it to scool till it was time to go to work. Walked in with that thing and i heard about 10 people yell "GENIUS!" I told them, yep and that's why I was working there. LOL Plastic bags work too.
I think more now it's done through a cathater (really? I can't spell that?), but I don't like that as much, since they usually have to be sedated.
