Nevadans?

Lookin good Pam!

Hey guys do you thing it would be wise to administer a shot of Pen-G (penicillin shots) to mama to fight post op infection? I have a whole bottle left over from the Petey incident last year and was just thinking today that it was a yucky messy procedure and even though we were clean that goo may have left behind some germs (it kept seeping while we were gluing up). So should we penicillin her?

With as little as I know about chickens, I'm going to say yes. Bacterial infections can spread so fast that they can be well underway by the time you notice them... which is why hospitals pump you full of antibiotics if you get any invasive procedure done.

Absolutely you should as soon as possible. Are you using ACV? This will help her as well. I'm glad you were able to get that out of her. It does sound like she had 2 problems and not just the sticks in her crop since she passed tons of worms too. Get some buttermilk in her for the probiotics.

Thanks Elizabeth! I skipped quoting your post to save time but I really appreciate the sympathy and common sense advice. Yes I realized yesterday just how far out of town we lived!
Huh. I didn't know that. Their poor little bums!
I know! That's what I thought when I read that! Something about the immature reproductive system spitting out too many "egg starts" too close together. Sorry for the brain fart. Can't think of the proper term so I substituted egg starts for the real word. I'm sure somebody can help me out and supply the proper word here. lol
If anyone was wondering how to make their own ACV for themselves or their chickens, there's a great link here:
You can do it with the leftover scraps of all those apples our friends are giving us right now. I wouldn't use this vinegar for canning, though, because the acidity isn't guaranteed.

We should add that link to the recipe page.

Thanks for the confirmation! I moved them out into the grow out pen and I think they're pretty happy! I'm going to leave them in there for about a week before I let them out to meet the rest of the chickens. They can see each other, so that should give them time to acclimate.

I didn't realize how stressful this was, I'm so relieved to be back on track. I was really worried since the first one died within a few days of getting them and seeing the others that weren't doing well, then die. Worrying that they could jeopardize my whole flock! I'm feeling excited that I'm going to get dark eggs and I had always wanted a blue!

Here they are!

This is my pallet grow out pen that my husband built with the help of my 4 and 6 year old grandsons.
Awwwww! Your grandsons are adorable!!! I bet they loved helping grandpa work on the new grow out pen!

I agree with Missy. We get antibiotics post op why shouldn't chickens? The real danger of antibiotics is when they are given too often. For stuff like this they can be lifesavers.

Okay well do you guys have suggestions on water soluble antibiotics, I just realized the pen-g requires a huge needle into the breast meat and she has none. The only water soluble antibiotics I have are for respiratory infections. I just don't think it will work as well, wish I could give her the shots

We had one of our Buff Rocks die, not a clue as to why. What do you do with the dead chicken, do you throw it in the trash... seems to me that Waste Management frowns on that besides it will stink by the Monday our garbage day. :(

That's what we do. Thankfully, deaths have been very close to garbage day. You could always go by an apartment complex and toss it in theirs.

I was thinking of going out to the blm land and tossing her there, at least the coyotes might get a meal... Please understand I love our chickens and I was/am devastated she died, I have just had one of those
mornings...
This is what our 17yr son did trying to back out of our driveway this morning at 7:00a.m. Luckily a neighbor was home and was able to pull the mailbox off with his truck.

Uggh, that's stuck!

Re: BLM... no judgment here. I grew up on a farm in the boonies. A little less sentimental and more utilitarian.
