Nevadans?

oh wow Seth, where do i start?

Um so i found Mama lying on the floor of the coop barely able to move. She was very skinny. I thought it was worms so i treated her imediately.

after a few days she still wouldnt eat on her own so i began force feeding her scrambled eggs.

After another few days She was not getting better and I realized her crop was packed full. I fed her olive oil to get things moving along.

next day still nothing. I felt around and felt something hard in her crop. Decided the only option was to perform crop surgery on her to get the object out. If she had something stuck in there it would explain why she was starving to death despite my feeding her

tuesday night i performed the operation by cutting her skin and into her crop. A very risky thing to do as the bird cannot be put to sleep during. Pulled out rotton food and two sticks.

At this point we are waiting to see if it heals alright and if food is passing into her stomach. If her food builds up in her crop again then i know she has an obstruction farther down in her digestive tract and there will be nothing we can do to save her. However it seems she just might be digesting the food shes being given and she is eating on her own for the first time in a week.

all we have to do now is take very special care that she doesnt get a nasty infection and die from it.

ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what did u get ???

Elizabeth gave me one of her silkie pullets, and I'm totally in LOVE with her! She's been here 2 days and she's already roosting up with the big girls and laying eggs in the nesting boxes. She took no time at ALL fitting in! Now we need the andalusians to do the same. They were so freaked out by joining the big flock that they both flew over the garden fence back to their old coop. I just let them. We'll probably have to clip wings to make them stay. Not that I can blame them, though... they get full run of the garden. They're such great foragers that they just eat the grass instead of the vegetables, and there are only two of them.

I had a major panic this morning when I went to check on mama and it felt like she still had stuff in her crop. It also felt very hot. Infection. I felt defeated. It should have emptied over night if all obstructions were gone.
I gave her more yogurt and figured if she's gonna go I may as well give we a good meal. I gave her a slice of bread with olive oil on it and left for work. I was pretty sad all day.
Well when I got home I went to check on her. THREE poops, all of the bread GONE, COMPLETELY EMPTY CROP, and normal temperature! Sigh of relief! Still crossing my fingers here...
I set her on the ground to clean her crate and she booked it out the back door to the deck where she immediately layed down and enjoyed the sun. Whatta girl.

AWESOME!

We had one of our Buff Rocks die, not a clue as to why. What do you do with the dead chicken, do you throw it in the trash... seems to me that Waste Management frowns on that besides it will stink by the Monday our garbage day. :(
Oh I'm so sorry! That really stinks.

We just bag our's and freeze them til WM shows up. I need to start processing them for dog food. Unfortunately we have had to dispatch quite a few roos lately and it seems like a terrible waste.
I was thinking of going out to the blm land and tossing her there, at least the coyotes might get a meal... Please understand I love our chickens and I was/am devastated she died, I have just had one of those
mornings...
This is what our 17yr son did trying to back out of our driveway this morning at 7:00a.m. Luckily a neighbor was home and was able to pull the mailbox off with his truck.

Oh Dear! You poor thing! Like you hadn't had a rough enough day already.

I suppose I feel the same way....
Man I get sick and you people chat it up. Thought I'd jump in on the Mama. My Chicken Whisperer has taken care of 2 hens that I just couldn't lose and they were so thin. He gave the pen shots under the wing. I have a FBCM hen now with a huge crop. I need to go get her and crate her tonight. He said no food or water. I gave her bread with olive oil and red wine last time and it worked like always but this time it's huge and I feel lots of corn and things. I can actually hear it moving around in there. Hopefully this fast will work and I won't ave to take her to my poor neighbor and have to open her up.

OK, how big is this giant child? I have a 6'3" 16 year old that hasn't stopped yet. I know I have his clothes all put in bags SOMEWHERE! I've given some things away, but I still have lots. Not all name brand, but Dakotah just got his first ever grass stain a week ago! None of his clothes ever wore out. I have to buy new things for him every 3 months. Anyway, leave some sizes and if I ever feel better and get to things that I haven't, I just may run across a ton of clothes. Don't mind handing them off if someone needs them. What I hated was when I gave the people next door 2 garbage bags full of clothes and they ended up having a yard sale. I could have mad my rent with all those clothes.

Sunny! Make a couple of keys and hide them in a few places. And the phone? I try not to forget mine at all. Bill had bought me a neck strap for mine, but Kayla broke it not long after he died and I just haven't fixed it. Not like i don't have plenty of things to make more, I'm just not doing what I know I can do.

I'll tell the story again, but need to go rest again. I'm soooooo tired lately. I feel better, but not all there yet.
No rush Kim. You heal up and get your strength back first.

It'll still be a good story in a week or two.

Referring to the "giant child," would that be to me?

My son is 17 and he's not quite as giant as yours at 16. Right now he's in a 36 x 34 and they're looking a bit short. So, I think we're going to need 36 x 36 and up. He's not finished yet!

We worked some more on my feed barn today. I was going to take pictures to share but the camera's batteries are dead and I only have three more. It takes four!

This camera EATS batteries, I swear!
Cool! I love pics of building projects! :)
funny how somehow you end up with an odd number of batteries, but they all seem to take an even number...hmmmm

Aubrey, she looks really good!!! you can see it in her face(perfect color--not pale sickly looking) and nice bright eyes!!! WooHoo!!! Definately good signs!!!

When is sign up for the big poulrty show due?
HI Seth!! the "Post Mark" deadline is November 5th.... How is that big Blue Cochin pullet looking? Has she started laying yet? If it is any consolation I have about 45 large fowl hens and a few pullets and I have only been getting 1-4 eggs a day
hu.gif
15 are molting but everyone else has already molted! Before the chilly nights I was getting alot more eggs....The molting hens are getting turkey grower mixed with high energy layer pellets to help with their molts but jeepers!! My young Cayuga ducks have started to lay a few smallish eggs..... And my blue swedish Duck(noisiest girl in the west) lays her Big White egg almost everyday!! The Bantams are holding their own giving me their little eggs so that is something!

The NNPFA will have a Show Bird Display tomorrow 10-2 at the Garden Shop Nursery on Mayberry. The GSN is holding a Fall Festival for families and Roy Gomm School will have pumpkins there. Should be lots of fun things to do for the kids!! I am bringing my white Sebastopol (Curly) Geese, a few show quality birds: Australorps(my newest breed from back East), Light Sussex pullet(I won her in a breeders raffle woohoo) some runners, calls and maybe a Bantam or 2!! Stop by and say HI if you can! We will be over by the GSN animals East side of their lot. If you have never been to GSN you should check it out the set up is park-like with some petting animals too!

Is the display today? If so, that stinks! I could ride my bike there, but I have too many clients to risk being gone that long without a quick way back. Oh well. There's always the Nov. show.

Ok I don't feel so disappointed about my eggs. I topped out at 14 eggs in a day, and that was before my two ducks started laying. Now I'm getting 2 duck eggs a day, and 6-8 chicken eggs. Both of my ameraucanas are broody, though Noodle is starting to show signs of being less interested. Jerk is living up to her name though!

Next Saturday, we're going to finally put shingles on the roof! And we'll probably put the plastic on the mini-run as well, to start warming the air a bit. The weather is still amazingly nice, but my basil died last night so a frost is on its way in the near future. I have to get a new layer of polyurethane on my artistic doors while it can still dry! And once the shingles are up, we're going to have a light in the coop. Hopefully that will help out egg production a bit.

Aubrey - Mama is looking great! You are doing a fantastic job saving her!

Sunny - Bridgette laid her first egg Wednesday! Boy that egg is dark. I can't wait to see her next egg. Thanks Sunny, I love Bridgette!

Pam - Oh my.

Seth - Welcome back.

Elizabeth - How is the neighbor being now that your flock has sized down? I'm hoping he's happier now and you can keep the rest.

Kim - Get better soon.

Ghosts - I didn't believe in them until we moved into this house. The first night I had a strange dream my kitchen cabinets were opening and closing. The next day my youngest son said he had a dream the kitchen cabinets were opening and closing and a hand came at him right into his face. Well we get some strange things happening here all of the time. There was a time I would get scratches on my ankles and back while I was sleeping, in a place I couldn't reach. I had a dream there was a man standing at the foot of my bed. My girlfriend who loves to go to cemeteries to call up the dead told me I had a very bad spirit in the house and I needed to start burning sage. I picked a lot of sage and let it dry a bit and burned it. I made sure it just smoked and I walked around the house into the different rooms. I haven't had anything like that since. The friendly ones though I really don't mind. I figure they come here since the crematory is just across the freeway from me and a cemetery is just across the street.

It's really dark? Cool!!! She hatched from a dark egg but I wasn't sure the roo came from a dark egg since I bought him as a chick. So I have been really curious as to what her egg color would be like. All of those pullets were sold (not on purpose, Steve sold them and I didn't have the heart to tell folks he was mistaken) so I have not had a chance to see what the egg color was like. Thank you so much for letting me know! I have a couple that are a few weeks younger. They should be laying soon. The last batch was all roos, which is weird cause all the hatches were running really heavy toward pullets til this last one. They are very pretty roos though so I will probably keep 1 or 2.

I figure this project will still take a couple more years before I get all the birds laying the really dark eggs I want. I'm sure some patience will pay off big time in the end though. Funny that even the lighter eggs from these hens still taste just as delicious as any marans egg. Even my Dad, who says he can't taste the difference between a fresh egg and a store bought egg can tell a huge difference between a marans' egg and the others. Really impressed me when I overheard him talking to someone the other day and describing the buttery smell of these eggs before you add butter to them! haha Let me know what the taste/smell of the egg is like when you cook it! I so hope the taste quality is there as well. That is even more important to me than egg color which is saying a lot!

Now that is creepy! I lived just the other side of that cemetery, as you know, and never felt anything negative like that! How scary that must have been for you! brrrrrrrr! So glad the sage took care of it for you.

Kim, does sage help when a house has good energy already? Love the energy in this new house but wonder if an annual cleansing is beneficial anyway, for any house. Kind of as a preventative measure? IDK, maybe I should leave well enough alone. This house is seriously one of the most comfortable houses I've ever had the pleasure of living in. Maybe that's just cause the Landlords are so nice though. lol I could do without the rusty water though. Haha, always complaining about something!

Ghosts: I've been refraining from stating what my actual beliefs in ghosts are, because they stem from a belief that we have a rather important reason for even being in this world. If I try to keep it religion-neutral, or at least not preach or make insinuations that someone might be right or wrong, do you want to hear them?

Sunny - Here's a picture of her egg. I've read on here her eggs will get darker as she lays more.

Ghosts - I received a pm asking if we could not talk about them anymore. I hate to talk about things that could bother anyone.
