Hello Chicken People,

A few weeks ago our neighbor came over and said, "When you moved to the neighborhood last year, you said you wanted chickens. Well, our daughter-in-law has 8 for you, and you need to take them right now." The next thing you know, we had 8 semi-fuzzballs delivered to our doorstep. Oh, and did I mention that we do not know a thing about chickens?

Our neighbor does not know the chicks breeds or ages, but did say the chicks hatched at different times. Their best guesstimate is that they are between 5-8 weeks old now. We have seven that are buff in color and one black one. Can anyone tell us what this black one is? I will attach two photos from yesterday.

This is our first experience with chickens, and the entire family is already in love with them!
This web site has been so helpful! Thank you in advance for your replies.

It looks to be a mixed breed and probably male due to size of that comb and that sort patterning of white often becomes roo color pattern when mature.

Welcome to the world of chickens!

I would say not quite five weeks with all that down. Thick legs like that lead me to think cockerel. Mixed breed. :)

Thank you for the quick reply and warm welcome! And thank you for letting us know he is probably male! We have no clue how to tell the difference, so your input is appreciated more than you know. I guess our daughter was spot on when she named it "Mr. Oreo." :)

Wow! This group has already told us the sex, breed, and age of Mr. Oreo! Amazing!
I will have to get some pics of the other ones up, so you can help us with those too.
Cheers!

Welcome! You will learn alot about Chickeneering from this site. They even have a learning center! Good luck with your new flock!
