Never owned a chicken. Have 8 new chicks. What is this? :)

Nice pic! Thanks for the info. We are "guessing" they are at least 5-6 weeks old, but the owner did not know for sure. She found the mama and a bunch of chicks in a flower bed one day. They think some hatched at different times, and that she was sitting on another hens eggs too. There were three red ones, two black ones, and the rest were the ones in the pics. Unfortunately, the mama and some of the babies were attacked by a dog, so we were asked to take what was left of the chicks since they no longer had a mama. I have some pics ready to upload. I will try to get some side shots next time. Thanks again for the advice.

Here are some pictures of the other chicks. Please tell me I have at least one or two hens. :)

P.S. Thanks again for helping us with their gender.

Right now I'd say chick 4 and 6 are your pullets. But I would watch to see how chick 6s comb is developing.
So sorry you didn't end up with more layers.

Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply. We were definitely hoping for more than 2 layers out of the adorable little bunch. Ugh!

Thanks again for helping a family of newbies!

Hello everyone. Long time no chat. I just wanted to give you an update on the little ones. The neighbor's daughter-in-law dropped by and was able to answer a few questions for us. She said three different sets of chicks hatched, so we are not sure about their ages. We found out that all 7 of them have an Orpington for a daddy; and six of them have a RIR for a mother and 1 has an Australorp for a mother. (We had 8 chicks, but she asked for one back since the AZ heat got to her flock; we bought our spoiled babies a mister) So, I guess we have a flock of barnyard mutts! Here are some recent pics. Does it still look like we ended up with only two hens? Thanks for your help! :)

We have two that look like this. The other 4 red birds have large combs and waddles.

I hope everyone had a nice summer! Chat with you soon. :)
